Truth Academy won’t affect muchI believe the only people who will pay money to send their kids to this are the ones who are already convinced. This program will do little to convince anyone who is not already staunch right wing. I am not very concerned about the impact this will make on American discourse.
The concern I have is that these people are just as badas the white supremacist groups who spur young men to action and not in a good way. Young men are testosterone laden, act before you think, emotionally charged creatures who almost never think about consequences (especially 14 to 24 year old men). This group of young men are especially vulnerable to suggestion and peer pressure. If you look at crime statistics, this is the group one would want to target to carry out your hate crimes, because they would do them unapologetically and think that their acts were righteous. Why do you think the military recruits in High Schools? Perfect psychological storm.

Uh huh. Sure.Long list of homophobes posing as experts, speaking to each other. But just try and get them to back up their claims by, for example, being witnesses in the Prop. 8 trial, and they scatter like the cockroaches they are.
I thought I knew all the big-league homophobes in Pittsburghbut Prof. Robert Gagnon is new to me. He’s never had any kind of public presence here that I’m aware of, never testified at public hearings on LGBT issues, never to my knowledge crawled out of his hole before.
For the record, though, the very conservative Pittsburgh Theological Seminary is right here in my neighborhood, just a few blocks from where I’m sitting right now. And over the years I’ve attended several gay
parties(oh hell, why be euphemistic?) orgies there. I wonder if Gagnon was at any of them? The one seminarian I went so far as to date (briefly) now has his own fundie church in central PA, which he “co-pastors” with his equally closeted lover. Needless to say, they cheerfully preach about how sinful homosexuality is–and their congregation is quite ignorant of their relationship (though, frankly, if it was printed on a sandwich sign it couldn’t be much more obvious).I hasten to add that all of this took place when I was young, ignorant and very horny. I pray that Jesus will forgive me for polluting some of his earthly soldiers, willing and even eager though they were to get polluted.

I didn’t do more than skim, but it seems to be top-heavy with articles on the Bible and homosexuality. In other words, this clown has built a career on something the Bible barely even mentions. Just the sort of thing Peter and his fellow bozos groove on. I’m sure he’ll be a big hit.

Seriously…Matt Barber talking about “Masculine” anything? But the scary part is the “non-defensive,” which translates to “offensive.” and we know what masculine is the code word for. Combined with Lindevaldsen’s presntation about rights being a zero sum game. So their new message is going to be that if you give us rights, you have to give up your own.
The other point was about Peter’s sticker…I seem to remember from all the cowboy movies I ever watched, all chaps are “ass-less.”

They are proving a side point.Unlike most atheists I don’t find religion to be the cause of a lot of the problems of the world, I just find that it gives people like these the ability to shine. What exactly would a all-things-gay buff do for a living if they couldn’t wrap everything up in a tiny little memorized package and label it as being about religion and make a few bucks off of it? It has to be a zero sum game or else they wouldn’t have their special right to make everyone do things their way because some invisible people would make our lives miserable if we tolerate this or anything else they feel like being holier-than-thou about. Right now they are freaking out about not being able to push their weight around. It needs to be said in a way that the Peter will understand: “You’re not the boss of me!”

GagnonGagnon is big in Presbyterian circles. He’s the voice against ordination that every reporter goes to and quotes when the PCUSA tries to move to full inclusion. I don’t know the man but having read a couple of chapters of his book, he does seem to protest, well, rather stridently.

Granted, Steamworks does have the reputation that you describe (at least the Chicago one) and they do deserve it but you can find your share of seediness, shadiness, junkies, methheads, and rough trade there if you’re looking for it (not that I would know anything about that!)…now there is an…alternative… in the Chicago where you might find more of the elements that you describe.

What is bad is that they are not only preaching to the choirthey are warping the minds of teenagers who will forever be held in contempt of their views by the majority of Americans in the future. They are sowing the seeds of hatred in children.
