Gay marriage advocates believe there isn't any difference between two men in a sexual union and a husband and wife, and those of us who see this difference are blinded by hatred and prejudice. They delegitimize opponents, brand us as haters, and then try to strip us of our rights. – Maggie Gallagher, The Core Civil Right to Vote for Marriage
The shtick of Maggie Gallagher, founder of the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, is to play the victim.
She consistently whines that people like herself and her organization are being unfairly attacked and called “bigots” simply because they want to defend the supposedly “time-honored” belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.
Her constant complaints are really nothing more than a cynical ploy to divert attention away from the fact that in reality she has no logical arguments to oppose marriage equality.
And it reveals an ugly degree of selfishness indicative of many who oppose marriage equality. In Gallagher's world, it's not the lgbt couples being denied their rights that matter, but only herself and those like her who stand against marriage equality while claiming to be besieged and scandalized by “pushy, aggressive, radical homosexual activists.”
However, if Gallagher wants to continue this charade, she really should address the company that she keeps and supports such as The Traditional Values Coalition, who is listed as an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
And bear in mind that this distinction isn't simply because the group believes that homosexuality is a sin. According to SPLC, anti-gay hate groups:
. . . have engaged in the crudest type of name-calling, describing homosexuals as “perverts” with “filthy habits” who seek to snatch the children of straight parents and “convert” them to gay sex. They have disseminated disparaging “facts” about gays that are simply untrue — assertions that are remarkably reminiscent of the way white intellectuals and scientists once wrote about the “bestial” black man and his supposedly threatening sexuality.
When it comes to this description, TVC passes with flying colors. Among other things, the organization has:
claimed that the passage of ENDA would lead to the sexual abuse of disabled veterans,
continued to intentionally mix the term “sexual orientation” with “paraphilias” in another attempt to lie about ENDA,
used bad research in YET another attempt to lie about ENDA, including distorting marketing statistics, and
claimed that a repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell is a bad idea by asking, amongst other silly questions, how would the military ” handle sodomy in battlefield situations,”
Yet this is the same group which Gallagher's group (NOM) freely cited as a credible source in regards to a recent Republican primary in California.
And now via Goodasyou.org and blogger Matt Algren comes news that NOM has been aligning itself with one Louis J. Marinelli III.
Marinelli identifies himself as a “NOM strategist” and will also be working on the organization's 2010 Summer for Marriage Tour.
He is also a man who has never met an anti-gay distortion he didn't like. According to Goodasyou.org, his past tweets have been very interesting:
there was a retweet that declared all gays to be single. There was the time that Mr. Marinelli said that Peter LaBarbera and his fringe “Americans For Truth” group merely “tell the truth about homosexuality.” There was the determination that marriage equality is “a mockery and a hijacking of the civil rights movement.” There were times when he flat-out called us an abomination, citing Leviticus. There was this one: “Deviance” describes actions or behaviours that violate cultural norms – homosexuality is far from a cultural norm. Therefore, it is deviant.” And this: “Homosexuality and gay marriage are wrong and harmful to society.” And this: “#iaintafraidtosay that there shouldn't be any recognition of homosexual relationships because that is saying that homosexuality is OK.” There was this one, accompanied by a smile: “What they do is blantantly [sic] immoral.
” There were times when Mr. Marinelli compared our unions to that which might exist between a sterile brother and sister. And other times when our very character was assaulted: “#nevertrust activists of the homosexual agenda – they are deceitful people who care only about themselves and not what's best for society.“
And Marinelli also creates anti-gay videos including one in which he claims that:
. . . the homosexual agenda is really about the 3 Ps: prostitution, pedophilia, and polygamy.
Gallagher has no room to claim that the she is unfairly being called a bigot when she and her organization chooses to associate with those who freely and unapologetically stigmatize the lgbt community.
It's the equivalent of beaning people with rocks and then hiding your hands when they come to investigate.
In their zeal to defend the “time-honored” definition of marriage, Gallagher and company seems to have forgotten the “time-honored” definitions of truth and integrity.
Big hat tip to Goodasyou.org and blogger Matt Algren.
UPDATE – Marinelli's video was public until learlier today when it was “suddenly” marked as private, which means only Marinelli's youtube friends can view it.

But!If they can’t whine about how all us big mean nasty old GLBT folk are persecuting them how will they keep suckering convincing naive religious folks into giving them the phat cash to pay for their public Lie Machine?
This is clearly the new face of organized homophobiaThey’ve pretty much exhausted the knee-jerk “they’re all perverts” and are beginning to find that “they are actively out to destroy society” is being seen more and more as comical than anything else.
They’re figuring out that a decided plurality of straight people are quietly engaging in the sex acts that they were relying on being so disgusting that they could raise money on them, and more and more are willing to say so.
They’re left with circling the wagons and claiming that gay rights inherently violate their freedom of religion, and it seems to be working. We need to be prepared with new arguments to that.
The trick they are pulling is conflating the practice of their religion with the tolerance of other religious viewpoints. If I keep you from going to church, I am interfering with the practice of your religion. If I go to a different church or none at all, I am not, even though what I do conflicts with your beliefs.
If your religion requires you not to eat a certain food, making you eat it interferes with your practice of your religion. Eating it in front of you does not. It might, in context, be rude, but it isn’t violating your religious freedom to do so.
And yes, there are grey areas, and we have to be prepared to sort them out. But this new tactic of theirs is to declare that our EXISTENCE violates their religious freedom. That we can’t be mentioned in schools. That we can’t be in any way supported by the government, that acknowledging our existence constitutes “promoting” our lifestyle. That existing is selfish.
And it plays to their audience. Nobody these days wants to be a bigot. So any justification for their bigotry will be more welcome than confronting it in themselves. And “I’m not a bigot, I’m just defending my religious beliefs” not only excuses the bigotry, but it lets them feel like they’re martyrs for their faith.
…gay rights inherently violate their freedom of religionThat’s exactly what the Catholic Charities did in DC, as a last defense. Ultimately, in our situation it looked like a childish tantrum and backfired on them. Let’s hope for the same.
BTW, this video is still available
Never forget!Let’s never forget that the TVC is also behind one of the most virulent propaganda films of all time, Gay Rights, Special Rights. Produced by Jeremiah Films in 1993, it makes all sorts of wild claims about the LGBT community by leading “experts”.
This cinematic piece of tripe was used in Cincinnati to split the black churches and the LGBT community and allowed Issue 3 to pass.
Copies of the film was sent to every student of Gerry Crane, the choral director for Byron Center, MI schools when he came out, the bigotry spread by this perverted movie lead to his suicide.
I consider this movie to be on par with the Nazi film The Eternal Jew as both propaganda, and an attempt to demonize and dehumanize a specific segment of people.
Well, on that argument, keeping black people in slavery was a “time honoredtradition” – yup, still believe that – you’re a bigot
and trying to “strip them of their rights”? Holy fucking projection.
You’re a bigot Maggie, plain and simple. well, worse actually – you do it to make money as opposed to simple or willful ignorance.
I hope your tombstone reads “Here Lies A Bigot” because that statement truly sums up your life. Lies and Bigotry in search of cash flow.
If her tombstone doesn’t say thatsomeone should post a small sign next to it saying so.
Hmmm….. where have I heard this before…..
it’s more than just a cry of victimhoodit’s a damnable lie. she has no idea what the concept of “rights” entail if she claims her “rights” are being infringed upon. no one is trying to stop her from expressing her opinion, and no one is claiming that free expression shouldn’t exist if you are a bigot (which she is). so where is this supposed violation occuring?
they “try to strip us of our rights”??? that’s totally laughable! rights are about equality, something that NOM has never been interested in when it comes to people they don’t like.
They never answer the question …How exactly does a same-sex marriage harm yours?
Or
Which of your rights specifically are we trying to take away?
Like most people who make sweeping irrational/illogical statements, their only response when asked for details is to blather on without actually answering the question(s), or just change to subject by making a different irrational/illogical claim.
Perhaps if we could get a course in logical thinking taught in EVERY year of school, we could someday have a higher percentage of citizens who are capable of thinking. It really would need to be taught every year, sort of like booster vaccinations, because it’s clear there’s a great chance of inadvertent contamination from people like Maggie & groups like NOM.
I’ll give her this…I agree that straight couples aren’t just like gay couples. I’ll take it a step further. No couple is all that much like any other couple. We’re all individuals and every relationship has its own measure of uniqueness.
None of this rises to the level where the law ought to start making distinctions, of course.
maggie bigotWhere exactly have you noticed these roving gangs of aggressive and radical gays pressuring people? This is how the right likes to declare their oppression… they do certain acts to press an issue then they say anyone opposing them are using the sleazy techniques themselves. If they are violent, they swear they are target of violence. If they are being bigots, they say they are victims of prejudice. I don’t know whether it’s pathological or they simply find it amusing to be bigoted, racist, violent pricks and get away with it. Either way, I notice that it’s always the unattractive people who worry the world is going to turn gay overnight.
Hmmm…I wish there was a better flow of info between LGBT media and mainstream or atleast mainstream online media. Stuff like this needs to be presented to the average TV watcher, I think it is safe to say almost all the people reading this blog already knew Maggie was a bigot.
She’s not a bigot by associationShe’s just a bigot.
What rights arewe supposed to be stealing away from her. If it’s the right to be ignorant, well then we’re guilty as charged. We’re not taking away her right to be prejudiced and a bigot, just her “choice” to use that prejudice and bigotry in hateful ways.
If you correctly judge Gallagher by her bigoted associations, then why not judge Obama by his…
Rick Warren, author if the Uganda pogrom legislation who was rewarded for helping to defeat SSM in California with an invite to the Inaugural;
Leah Daughtry, retained by Obama as CofS of the DNC and ordained pentecostal minister, anti-choice and homohating bigot;
Tim Kaine, anti-GLBT, anti-choice Obama appointed Chair of the DNC;
Donnie McClurkin, ordained pentecostal bigot and ex-gay scum who was featured at a string of religious tent meetings/campaign rallies set up by Josh Dubois;
Josh Dubois, who ran Obama’s bigot outreach program during the campaign and was rewarded with the directorship of the White House Office for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships
Obama’s council of spirit world advisors includes Bishop T. D. Jakes and the Rev. Kirbyjon H. Caldwell, ordained homohaters who were also ghost world advisors to George W. Bush.
The list goes on and on…
Judging by his associates Obama is a bigot.
EXCELLENT POINTS . . . butWith Gallagher, we are talking about someone who will spin tales about “intolerant gays” while freely associating and working with those who actively demonize us.
Obama has never spun the hypocritical lie of “intolerant gays.” His main problem is his desire to build a consensus and get two sides of an argument to work together, even when such can never be the case.
In other words, Gallagher is savvy in a situation where she should be truthful and Obama tries to be a consensus builder in cases where he should stand firm against lies.
Of course…Seems like Maggie forgets her history… again!
It wasn’t too long ago (historically speaking) that a woman wouldn’t be allowed to vote, let alone be allowed to own and run an organization!!
Alvin, Obama goes a bit further than that… He actively and consistently pushes bigotry and bigoted policies.
He sabotaged same sex marriage in California.
He refuses to offer asylum to GLBT folks threatened by the US armed and controlled jihadists in Iraq and the US led and financed bigots in Uganda and elsewhere.
His DoJ actively and consistently defends Clintons DADT and DOMA.
He interferes with and stops Congressional efforts to pass our agenda.
He staffs the DNC with bigots.
And, as I pointed out above, he surrounds himself with bigots.
In return we get easter eggs. Pretty easter eggs.
Obama/Biden and the Democrats have no more to offer than McCain/Palin and the Republicans. They insult us publicly. He waits till we leave the room.
Point taken and givenBut I still think Gallagher is far worse. Although between you and me (and I am seriously going to duck the remarks here), I don’t think one can blame Obama – at least solely – for the Proposition 8 vote.
The question is not who’s the most mean spirited enemy but who’s the most powerful enemy, Gallagher or Obama. What happened in California was not Obama’s fault entirely. But saying that doesn’t excuse the fact that the polls reversed against us after being in our favor for months directly after Obama’s bigotry – ‘gawd’s in the mix’ – galvanized the bigots.
HRC and EQCA did their part by not calling Obama on his bigotry, which emboldened the bigots, and by stupidly running an Eurocentric campaign in a state where minorities are the majority. And the morons, the child rapist cult and southern baptists played their role.
We should never underestimate the power of labeling people as bigots and if you want proof of that look at how they squirm and squeal when we publish the names of donors to bigoted campaigns.
No question about it. Prop 8 belongs to Obama just as much as DADT and DOMA belong to Clinton. We’ll leave it to history to decide whether he’s 90% or 99% to blame.
Funny how they claim that “we” are violating their freedom of religionwhen they should be complaining to the government. It’s the government who cannot violate their freedom of religion, not us.
