What the hell is wrong with South Carolina?
Last Thursday, the SC House of Representatives did something so wrong that words cannot convey how I feel about it:
The South Carolina House voted Thursday to cut all HIV/AIDS funding from the budget, a funding issue that could affect thousands of South Carolinians.
The South Carolina HIV/AIDS Care Crisis Task Force reports there are more than 14,000 people living in the state who have tested positive for HIV or AIDS. About 3,000 people rely on government funds for medications.
. . . Dr. Bambi Gaddist of the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Care Crisis Task Force says when state funding began in 2006, more than 600 people were on a waiting list for medicine. Four of those people died.
Currently South Carolina ranks 8th in newly diagnosed HIV cases and that is up from last year when it ranked number nine. And new infections are hitting young black and bisexual gay men at an ugly rate.
But none of these things seem to be a matter of concern to the South Carolina Legislature.
Apparently it's not enough for South Carolina to be nationally embarrassed by our “Argentinian trailwalking” Governor, our Lt. Governor who doesn't know the difference between stray animals and poor folks and our national Congressman who mistakes the President's speech with Showtime At The Apollo.
We are now entering territory where thing aren't funny anymore. I sincerely doubt that The Daily Show can find anything funny about this dereliction of duty by South Carolina's government to its constituents.
Let's be honest here. The elimination of HIV funding is the culmination of piss poor management by South Carolina's governing body. And worse, it shows where the state's priorities are. It's an ugly indictment on the hypocrisy of the supposed Bible belt region.
It is written that Jesus healed the sick, but I guess things have changed to the point that those who claim to be his followers have no problems with ignoring the sick.

I don’t know Alvin, I keep asking you that?
Let’s see, with a governor who was whoring around, and all kinds of sexual shenanigans by pols in that state, you’d think they’d want to do something about STDs and medical care.
As if heterosexuals don’t transmit HIV?!
The State of South Carolina has just condemned 15000 to deathand history will show that the state legislature just killed a total number of people equal to 5 times that killed in the World Trade Center terror act.
I see that Christian compassion and love won over those in South Carolina this past Monday. What a triumph for Jeebus.
That’s not ignoring themThat’s paying close attention and making a decision to kill them.
outrageousThis is just plain heinous. The SC license plates should have a swastika.
The definition of “oxymoron”“Christian charity“…I can’t help but wonder when those whose souls have been so blackened last cracked a Bible with anything but hatred in their hearts.
If these folks are Christians, I’m the Queen of England.
South CarolinaToo small to be a state, too large to be an insane asylum.
I think some truly believe that.I actually saw someone try to resurrect the horrible “GRID” name which was proposed in the early ’80s. I’m thinking a segment a) believes it and/or b) wants to get others to believe it.
I would imaginethat they expect this to result in all their HIV-positive citizens moving out of state to more supportive environments… something the folks who did this wouldn’t mind in the least.
It’s the same logic that results in cigarette taxes that eponentially raise the cost. The lip service is that it’s supposed to be a deterrent; the reality is it’s something they can hike taxes on that the majority will cheer them for since it’s not hitting them in the wallet. If 51% of the population still smoked they’d still cost 50 cents a pack.
It’s pretty simple…Abstinence Only Education + No HIV funding = Genocide for anyone not following Biblical teachings.
That’s what they want, so they are getting their way. I don’t know why that surprises anyone!
yup
In the words of Alan GraysonDon’t get sick, but if you do, die quickly.
Hasn’t passed full vote yet! This only passed the House Ways and Means Committee, so it’s not over YET. The House as a whole takes up the budget on March 15 (according to a GOP Rep, @dphamilton, on Twitter & my rep’s useless “answering service”).
This is just one (but the cruelest) of a slew of horrible horrible cuts the W&M Committee has approved. See http://www.google.com/hostedne…
Please do what you can do to stop this!
bad linkDon’t think the link I used word, so here’s another shot:

“SC lawmakers cut taxes, fret over health care cuts,” Jim Davenport, The State, 3/4/10.
Fretting, I’m sure…
What difference does it make? These people believe that if you are not “Christian” (translation: if you don’t believe exactly what they do), then you are going to Hell anyway. So what difference, in their minds, does it make if you get there a little sooner?
They might even think they’re doing God a favor. They are that Sick ‘n’ Twisted™.
With all the ass hattery in the southI wonder if Lincoln shouldn’t have just said “Screw it, let em’ have their confederacy.” At least then we’d not have tax dollars flowing North to South.
Here’s my theory…Here’s my theory about what would’ve happened if the North had let the South go:
1. The South would have eventually given up slavery before too long because it is cheaper to hire disposable wage slaves than to own slaves whose health you have an economic incentive to maintain.
2. The South would have remained a poor producer of raw materials, with, perhaps, some textile manufacturing, until…
3. With Hitler’s rise to power, the South would have allied itself with Germany, Italy, and Japan.
4. The Allies would still have won the war, but it would have taken longer. The South would eventually have been crushed. Unlike Germany and Japan, however, the South would never have experienced an “economic miracle.”
5. The South today would remain an essentially fascistic nation, as is its basic nature, but with the economy of Mexico, providing the North with cheap manufactured goods and produce. Poor people there would suffer greatly.
6. Meanwhile, evangelical “Christianity” and neo-fascism would be much smaller movements in the North than they are today, being indelibly associated in the minds of Northerners with the North’s former enemy, the South.
This was the first phase of Final Solution in GermanyThe T4 programme, the elimination of the chronically ill…
Other countries, like Croatia , started with wholesale killings.
Congrats South Catolina, whose State Sapital Building will, a in a decade or two, be regarded with the same kind of frightening awe as the Villa Wannsee
Didn’t think they could come up with a new reason to discriminate…My Bad.But correct me if I am wrong would this be the equivalent of discrimination of the grounds of a medical condition? I mean yeah, private insurance companies can do it but a State government!? We can’t still be living in the United States of America. SO maybe next time they can take all the funding away for diabetics or hemophiliacs is there any sense to this kind of discrimination?
SC wouldn’t be broke if…the cigarette tax was more than $.07 per pack, the sales tax on cars, boats and airplanes was more than $300, we didn’t have the 4th lowest gas tax, the 10th lowest corporate income tax (which they want to do away with altogether), tax only have of the proceeds from the sale of a modular home, we collected tax on the sale of newspapers and newsprint, we collected taxes on the full gross proceeds on the rental of a portable toilet rather than 30%. It goes on and on. If all goods and services were taxed equally at the current sales tax rate, the state’s revenue would be twice what it is now. Most of the people who are elected to our state legislature are buffoons. They ran for office because of some single issue, usually against some tax that affected them, and they have no concept of the big picture or the very serious issues that confront the people of this state. They are fine with being a poor state that can’t afford to do anything for its people.
This is shameful. The next thing . . .. . . we’ll hear is that they’ll be budgeting a few dollars for free one way bus tickets to New York, for those affected.
This is trueIn the region it’s not uncommon for someone in another state who buys an airplane to use an SC dealer to broker the deal because the state’s sales tax is capped at $300. For a $500k/$1 million aircraft, the appeal is obvious.
On the other hand, if you’re an SC resident and buy a new car, while your sales tax is capped at $300, the annual county property tax on a new/newer car will absolutely choke you. (And you still won’t get much in return for what you pay in, either.)
As for the General Assembly, it reminds me of the observation I read long ago that in the South, it’s common for a daddy to buy his dumbest son a seat in the state legislature so he won’t stay home and screw up the family business. That explains a lot….
I am well aware of the annual tax.The SC legislature has made such a mess of the tax system, with Act 388 and others, that I don’t think they can clean up the mess.
IndeedThere’s a reason I drive a 10-year-old car. :)
I drove my last car for 19 yrsuntil the engine blew. I loved getting a $30 property tax bill. Now its about $250!
It gets Richer…The SC Legislature Has Passed Zero Corporate Taxes for Ten Years, just a few days ago.
The State has millions in unpaid debt via unpaid unemployment withholdings, and one of the highest unemployment rates nationally (I think around 24 %) and yet they think that cutting taxes on Corporations (not the people) is the answer? How is this going to help “the People”? This is not being Fiscally Responsible”? It is “Fiscally Irresponsible“!
If Cutting taxes for business really created jobs, then South Carolina would be a virtual Boom-State, but alas, it is not – the old Republican mantra is completely false. Cutting taxes for businesses only bolsters the wealthy. The Banks didn’t hire or start giving out loans (which was the intent), they just gave out larger bonuses.
R U ready fot the next bust?
