We haven’t seen a new batch of Republican Sexual Hypocrites so far in 2010, but in slides anti-gay California State Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield), who manages a triple play.
- After being pulled over for driving erratically in downtown Sacramento at 2AM on Wed., he earned a DUI, reeking of alcohol, with bloodshot eyes, and blew over a .08.
- He was driving a state vehicle, owned by the taxpayers at the time. Ashburn immediately won’t be allowed to drive any vehicle for 30 days.
- And the conservative “family values” pol, who fought marriage equality, did this after leaving a gay nightclub, Faces, with an unidentified man in the state vehicle.
Blender Chino Blanco sent us the video…
Ashburn, a father of four, is a Republican Senator representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties with a history of opposing gay rights.
Ashburn issued a statement on the arrest Wednesday afternoon:
“I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”
As Joe Jervis notes, Roy easily meets the Larry Craig gold standard of Republican Sexual Hypocrite:
He also has a 100% rating from the anti-gay Capitol Resource Family Impact group for voting against every LGBT rights bill during his tenure.
Don’t you wonder whether the “unidentified man” in the car knew he was cruising off with a self-loathing homo-hater? If he didn’t, he certainly knows now…

tsk!tsk!
lookit that bitter thin-lipped qween!!!
Not even surprising anymore – Said it before but it certainly bears repeatingWhen they start talking more about gay sex than me and any five of my gay friends, they’ve got some demons in their closet.
Dear GOP wives – if your man is hitting the anti-homo stuff often and loudly, hire a private detective. The loudness is supposed to cover up any gay vibes they’re afraid of leaking out
blah, blah, blah
…and I will be returning to the PGA tour shortly….
[thought balloon] Wow, that was smart, eh? I made a funny. I glommed on to the image of an over-sexed hetero – even though I’d never let him buy a house in my neighborhood. Now, maybe all of my Merle-Haggard-fan-club constituents won’t start looking for me getting blow jobs from George Michael while parked along old Route 66. [close thought balloon]
No, actually, I plan to get back to what is, unquestionably, the most pressing issue of the day for the California Legislature: convincing Gov. Schwarzenegger to appoint Lou Sheldon to the California Supreme Court.
Hat trick!
Seriously? Where is the dignity?Foley-Gate, Toe-Tappin’ Larry, and now Boy-Bar Roy.
You’d think after Foley these self-hating queer peers of ours would get the hint. We’re gonna root you out, and it’s not going to be pretty…
Does he think his constituents and his religious zealot base are going to believe he was at a gay night club for the drink specials? Laff.
It makes me step back and wonder, with 3 of these guys now in the light for such hypocritical acts – what else is really out there lurking in the shadows of our State and Federal Governments? Kinda scary.
Bakersfield is one of, if the, most homophobic part of CaliforniaIt was the Kern County clerk, Ann Barnett, who declared in June, 2008 that the county would cease doing civil weddings althogether so she wouldn’t have to marry same-sex couples. (See here for her tearful “Why do you hate me?”)
My, my! The schadenfreude is pretty tasty today.
Of course he’s anti-gay marriage! He wants gay playing around.
For himself & select cadre of hypocrites.
Why get married when you can milk the bull?
So to speak.
Another one bites the dust.I wish I could say that this story makes me sad, but in reality, it brings me joy…I am sure karma is going to bite me in the ass for that!
I thought CA was broke.
Didn’t California pay with IOU’s last Summer?
Why do State Senators get nice new Chevy Tahoes? My State Rep here drives her personal (and beat up) Ford Taurus.
No wonder the state is so messed up.
Most states have cars that can be borrowed for official businessIt makes economic sense to maintain a small fleet of vehicles that government officials can borrow for official business: it is less expensive to maintain and fuel these cars than to calculate and issue reimbursement checks, and usually less prone to fraud.
Typically, the cars will have the government seal and the text, “For Official Use Only.” I expect Rep. Ashburn was using the vehicle with the expectation that he would be less likely to get pulled over. It will be interesting to find out if he had obtained it for legitimate reasons.
He probably rented it out because he was in Sacremento for the weekend Something else all these lovely government cars have as well. LoJack! Just let him try to lie about where he went and why! lol
This is not going to be pretty. the DUI program is extremely tough in Cali these days and .08 means special treatment and extended punishment, automatically. Can’t wait to see what the anonymous young man has to say! Usually these guys have some idea who they are with but rarely how they effect the community until they hear the news stories.
I totally agree…and I do not think karma…will be biting us… But surely is biting HIM!
i fear the closetjust isn’t large enough to contain them all. actually, i feel sorry for his wife and kids, who’ve been forced to live his lie.
RE: Most states have cars that can be borrowed for official businessNot ours.
Sure would be nice. Our state rep is having financial difficulty determining whether to run for state senate – the annual pay is a stipend of $10,800 for their first year and then reduced to $7725 for the second.
Hardly covers gas if you’re from the county.
Closeted news coverage in BakersfieldWhy no mention that this anti-gay Senator was arrested for this DUI leaving a popular GAY bar?
The second link in the post is for the Bakersfield newspaper. There is NO mention that he was stopped as he was leaving a gay bar. Does mention an “adult male” passenger. It’s all about being drunk…the closet continues.
Most are descendents of Oklahoma1930′s dust bowl refugees. Which explains some of the homophobic mentality of the area.
They are vehicles leased by the Statefor the exclusive use of the Senator or Assemblyman. The legislatures chose their vehicles within their lease allowance. The vehicles range from environmentally friendly hybrids, to gas guzzling SUV’s and flashy Cadillac’s. They are plain unmarked vehicles with the license plate being the only distinctive feature. The numbering is a red S followed by blue numbers for state senators and red A with blue numbering for state assembly members.
It would be better if they were all issued standard white sedans with “State of California, Official Use Only” decals on the front doors. But, that won’t happen as the Legislature determines their own salary and perks.
Hmmm…Well, as a gay Sacramentan I can tell you that the drink specials at Faces on Wed. nights are pretty nice. But with the obscene salaries and perks our legislators get I can hardly see that as being his main draw to the clubs that night. Especially with his “unidentified male” passenger. What a tangled web we weave… Let’s just hope his family isn’t too damaged by the lie he’s made his life.
ROFLMQAO!I hope he gets the FULL Larry Craig, Queerty, HuffPo and FOX News have the story.
I was working in the garden all day, but my hubby’s conservative sister was talking about him on the phone when I came in, and she watches FOX.
From queerty they mentioned it was Latin Night, and he’s a bad tipper (from a bartender)
What I hate is how many Republican A-queens have known for quite awhile about this traitor?
Why can’t it be simple? There’s a few issues here -
First, the initial cover-up by local MSM. That says a lot about them.
Then, the stereotype of the secretly Jewish member of the Gestapo being more-anti-semitic-than-thou to avoid suspicion.
There’s the whole misuse of taxpayers money in the bipartisan pig-trough.
There’s the whole negligent irresponsibility of not just over-indulging, but driving while significantly impaired. He could have killed people.
Finally… he has 4 kids. Whose lives have been irretrievably changed by this. Before I indulge in unbridled schadenfreude, maybe I should think of the collateral damage, and try to be a decent human being.
The Senator may deserve public humiliation, and more. His family doesn’t, but how to avoid that without letting this ambulatory offal get away with it? And if he’s strongly gay, rather than being bi… what kind of torture must he have lived through all his life? Probably trying to be straight, and in denial because of religious belief that being gay was sinful. I have some experience with something similar, remember. I don’t even have the excuse of moral belief, I was just too cowardly.
I never made anyone else suffer though. But if he was doing it out of moral conviction… what then?
I don’t honestly know if this is just another case of a hypocritical sleazebag politician, a selfish sociopath.. or something much sadder. A gay guy who cracked up under the strain. I’ve had experience there too, as a woman who thought she had to pretend to be male. I might have made it until I died from natural causes too, if my body hadn’t staged a palace revolt.
What kind of world is it when you can’t even sustain a sense of smug, self-righteous anger at someone like this? Please don’t tell me I’m turning into a Lefty. If so, I trust one of my friends will put me out of my misery.
Though looking at some of the comments here… if that’s what being on the Left looks like, it seems to me that it’s a lot like being on the Right.
He did a lot of damage with those votes. He, of all people, should have known better. But if he is a gay who finally cracked, he’s had punishment aplenty for it. I hope he’s just a sleazebag himself, so I can loathe him without feeling conscience-stricken about it.
Now can we work together to undo the damage?
