Police wiretaps are expected to result in charges against Angelo Balducci, 63, a Papal Gentleman, as lay attendant are called, and the former chairman of the Holy See’s Public Works Department, which is itself caught up in a corruption investigation.According to police, Balducci regularly contacted Chinedu Ehiem Thomas, a Nigerian man who sings in St. Peter’s Cappella Giulia, to engage the sexual services of young male members of the choir, along with seminarians and undocumented immigrants seeking residency status.
The scandal now envelops Balducci, a well-known and powerful local figure who is married with two children, who despite all this is said to have taken remarkable risks in setting up sexual liaisons even in Chigi Palace, home of the Italian prime minister, or immediately after a private audience with a cardinal.
In 72 pages of transcribed wiretaps, Ehiem tells Balducci about one possible candidate: ”Angelo … I’ll say no more. Two meters (6-foot-7), 97 kilos (250 lbs.), 33 years-old and completely active (top).”
In one wiretap from last December, Renzi is heard explaining the rules of engagement: “You’ll get up to 2,000 euros … Do not touch his balls. You need the money. Put on some music, take out the [inaudible], swallow the Viagra, and adelante!”
And how about the treatment of immigrants? Wonder what promises Baldacci sold them about residency so he could turn them out. Wow. Just. Wow.

It’s like my sister says….The problem isn’t straights secure in their own sexual identity. It’s “straights” who are NOT secure in their own sexual identity that are the only thing between LGBT people and equal rights. And the more they are exposed, the more willing straights who aren’t worried about who’s sleeping with whom will ally with us. The future is on OUR side, not theirs.

It’s the karmic cycle of shame…that’s going to end in no good way. When people are shamed into living underground lives (as I was) those feelings tend to come out sideways.
This is just another (high profile) sad example.
Not for a minute to defend thisbut I am starting to see some people make the connection of “young choir members” with the idea that these are children.
As near as I can tell the Cappella Giulia is all adults. Remember that in Vatican terms, most people under 40 are young. Hell, most people under 50 are young.
The hypocrisy is toxic, but unless we hear some new breaking news, this is about consenting (paid) adults, not about pedophilia.
I wish it was snarky to say that the pedophiles don’t pay their victims.
This makes me think thatthe reason why the Catholic Church is so homophobic is because they’ve been so unhealthily practicing their sexuality. If they’re all a bunch of dirty skeeves, they probably think the rest of us are, too. I guess that’s what guys who are mandated to be celibate would think…
So, so, so unhealthy… and creepy. Sadly, the Catholic Church never learns from these scandals, they just try to make things more secretive and behind even more doors, though almost certainly even more entertaining when the secrets do come out.
During the one year I spent in a seminary,I was so naive I really didn’t understand why all the priest and “lay” brothers keep creeping in and out of each other’s rooms every night. Oh, the wisdom of hindsight!
