It was awesome…Did you notice nothing else was going on at the time. Just her singing. No dancing or over the top video images.
I did notice they did not show her up close very much. I hope that wasn’t intentional. She did a fantastic job.
Brought tears to my eyesI love this song. I don’t care if everyone has covered it. This was the most beautiful rendition of the song that I have ever heard.
No lightning from heaven.A song about God that was written by a Jew and sung by a lesbian. And God didn’t flatten the place. Take that Pat Robertson!
Can’t view the video outside the US againIt’s frustratingly impossible to find a recording of this, other than the 1:38 partial clip on You Tube. The previous recordings don’t match up to what was on CTV last night. If anyone has an option, please let me know.
Her even better version…
…wailing all the heart and heartache out of the song without help of a single glowing light or computer-generated dove…proving why even composer Leonard Cohen believes she performs it better than all the others.
I knew she would sing that song!one of her best…the entire album she released this on, of Canadian written songs, is terrific. Highly recommended if you liked this.
No close upI also noticed there were very few closeups, most panoramic views. Not the case with Sarah McLachlan nor Nikki Yanofsky.
Hard to believe it wasn’t deliberate.
First I had to download……yet another plug-in from MicroSoft, then I had to verify that I subscribe to a service that carries NBC and then I have to sign in on an NBC website with my FiOS password??? At that point I “x’ed” out of there. I’m not giving my FiOS password (and therefore my email password) to anyone. WTF?!?!?!
It was intentionalNot showing her close up was intentional. The BBC and the Canadian chanels showed her close up more than long shots. Also did you notice she was the one of the few singers to actualy sing and not just mouth the words.
Maybe she asked for that??Because she has picked up some pounds (not unlike myself!).
But then again, maybe they did it on purpose because they didn’t like her ‘butch’ appearance. I could see that happening.
I absolutely love her, I don’t care how she wants to style herself. In fact, I like her style. She’s so one of us.
Yeah, no kiddingI know Microsoft is desperate to get SilverLight installed on all of our computers, but it’s such a huge pain in the ass. I’ve used it exactly once before, and that was to try to watch part of the previous Olympics. Haven’t used it since. Also, it didn’t work well — hopefully things are improved this year!
That was superb…Must admit, I did not know her, and guessed she was… almost confusing her with Chaz Bono. GREAT GREAT Song, best of the whole show…Although the aerial prairie flying to 'Clouds' was spectacular too.
Here it isbut may be regional. Also, you have to d/l Microsoft silverlight (on Mac, anyway): http://www.ctvolympics.ca/vide…
It’s the full opening ceremony. KD Lang sings at 2:30:00. This has closeups and all, not like the NBC broadcast.
I’m not sure if there’s a way to save this, and they don’t provide a way to embed.
Hymns of the 49th Parallel…is the album of Canadian-written covers. I’m amazed at how many younger people have no idea who she is. More amazed I just wrote “younger people”. I am now officially old.
The version on the album has these two wonderful moments where she uses a tiny rough spot in her voice to great effect; I still get a shiver when I hear it.
Could be because I first heard the album while reading Feinberg, but with her choices of Cohen’s verses the song became a hauntingly beautiful stages-of-coming-out:
verse 1: religious upbringing
verse 2: baby dyke finds guidance & release
verse 3: grown up, settling in
verse 4: looking back, slightly jaded
I always thought that was too self-referential, either for her or me until I came across a blog that read:
(from http://nicholadeane.wordpress…. )
Not quite my take on it, but it still makes the anti-gay boasting of the religioso at my work regarding her Olympic performance all the more tolerable.
O CanadaJust beautiful. There she was, out, proud, and doing her thing. Loved it.
Peace, noahsdad
