Beyond Veronica Doe’s story of discrimination by the Federal Air Marshals last week, we have discrimination alleged by managers of the same federal agency: this time against lesbians, gays, and African Americans.
As a photographic evidence of the allegedly bigoted office climate, a “Jeopardy Game Board” — a mock-up of the Jeopardy game drawn with blue marker on a whiteboard — gays were allegedly referred to as “Pickle Smokers,” lesbians allegedly referred to as “creatures,” and African-Americans allegedly referred to by “Our Gang.” The game board was allegedly frequently updated. The CNN article on this story states that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA – the parent agency of FAMS), but my single source states that whiteboard was allegedly up at the Orlando Field Office of Federal Air Marshals (FAMS).
Veronica Doe is based out of the FAMS’ Miami Field Office. Her complaint contains some the allegations related to the discrimination at the Orlando Field Office.
From CNN‘s Derogatory ‘Jeopardy’ board launches TSA probe (emphasis added):
The Transportation Security Administration has launched an internal investigation into an air marshal field office in Florida where supervisors are alleged to have used a crew assignment board to ridicule and keep score on women, gays and minorities, sources told CNN.The board, resembling the TV game show “Jeopardy,” includes categories such as “pickle smokers,” “our gang” and “creatures,” which sources said were names used by managers for gay men, African-Americans and lesbians.
A photograph of the board was sent to CNN. The Transportation Security Administration confirmed the investigation in a written statement but did not elaborate on when the board was in use, where it was displayed or how it was used.
From the TSA’s statement on this whiteboard, as reported from CNN:
The Transportation Security Administration is dedicated to ensuring all employees are treated in a fair and lawful manner. Accordingly, TSA takes all allegations of misconduct seriously. The Federal Air Marshal Service will continue to provide its full cooperation and support to the investigation…The Transportation Security Administration is dedicated to ensuring all employees are treated in a fair and lawful manner,” it said. “Accordingly, TSA takes all allegations of misconduct seriously. The Federal Air Marshal Service will continue to provide its full cooperation and support to the investigation.
The L, G, and T subcommunities of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, and the African-American community are all allegedly targeted for discriminatory behavior within the TSA’s Florida FAMS Field Offices. It appears to me that discrimination and hate against minority, identity community members doesn’t seem to be affected by the kind of lines we in minority communities often draw between groups. If one is predisposed to discriminate against one minority group’s members, it appears to me that one is predisposed to multiple minority groups’ members; Racism, homophobia, and transphobia seem tied together in those predisposed to hate or discriminate.

Stay classy, TSA.
As I’ve pointed out tosome of the imbeciles on Huffington Post, the only difference between racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia is the target.
Those arrogant sh*tsHow dare they! This is behavior worthy only of drunken college fraternity kids.
They are Air Marshalls.Unless on they happen to actually be in a plane that is having some sort of issue, they are in “regular” mode.
Which, for them, is frat boy.
Unfortunately, I do think there is something … to the cliche of the cops or security guards etc where authority unchallenged goes to the head. At least until it’s forced to confront and co-exist with reality. Some of the worst treatment the trans community has experienced has been from various modes of authority.
One of our local law authorities is going to have to face this in the coming year. I hope they handle it better.
Who is this directed at?A question that I have is to whom are these epithets directed at? Are these middle managers (many of who are former Secret Service retirees)keeping score on their own employees which would seem the likely case here. Either way the behavior is outrageous and causes concern for the civil rights of all concerned, especially the LGBT and African-American communities.
The need to have an inclusive ENDA would sure help but I think that some thorough house-cleaning is in order within management and that the men and women involved (I will guess that they are straight white males but will give the benefit of the doubt for now)should be held accountable.
Behavior such as this lend credence to the allegations in the recent case cited where the transgender Air Marshal was harassed and discriminated against by her superiors in the nearby Miami Field Office.
The combination of events seem to indicate a pattern of behavior and a sense of “untouchable-ness” by the leaders of these offices, to do what they want, to whom they want, with no accountability. When does senior management step up and really address the problem? After someone is hurt or could it be after many more law suits are files and the agency is held accountable and pays out millions in punitive damages to plaintiffs. You would think THAT would make a difference.
That should be perfectly obvious to anyone So, what redeeming qualities do they have that allow them to be up-classified from idiots to imbeciles?
(Darn, then I second guess myself; despite my own propensity to use the term “idiot” to describe people like that, when I reflect on it I start feeling a little uncomfortable about my use of outdated terms (“moron,” “imbecile,” “idiot”) formerly used as clinical terms to classify persons with mental developmental disabilities, as being insultingly descriptive of people who should know better but don’t.
Ultimately, though, it’s something like the term “travesty,” which is a perfectly fine term, except when I think about the etymological derivation.)
Those who don’t see the similarities may:
(a) merely be ignorant (which works until it’s explained to them – they don’t know any better until then);
(b) be mentally incapable of understanding (in which case, the use of moron, imbecile or idiot could actually be non P.C., particularly if there is other evidence of an actual disability in mental development); or
(c) really should know better but are blinded by their prejudice or bigotry against one or another of the suspect classes (in which case, I’m inclined to hack away with those terms, since it does, after all, give the terms new life.)
How dare you compare racism and homophobia!!!(kidding…)
So they spend their timecooking up rubbish like this. Is it any wonder they’re too preoccupied to screen out idiots with exploding underpants? I sure sleep better at night knowing there are such vigilant, dedicated people guarding me.
Towleroad againSome of the commenters somehow get to the conclusion that the people who did this must have been African-American. That shows perfectly how extremly racist they are.
One, Tank, even claims “Per capita, african americans in this country are more homophobic than whites.”
I can’t understand why these people don’t get banned.
http://www.towleroad.com/2010/…
Not comparing……but making a link between the to when the link is painfully visible on a single whiteboard in a single field office.
And, please don’t forget I “compared” linked alleged transphobia to the alleged racism and transphobia in the Florida field offices too.
But yeah, I get you’re kidding. =)
But, for those who think I really was making a comparison rather than a linkage between the alleged racism, homophbia, and transphobia in the Florida FAMS Field offices, I’m answering your statement as if you posed a serious question.
Oops! That second paragraph in that comment above should have read (change bolded):
Okay thenI’m officially taking the train from now on.
Well…may of us have questioned that…
As far as Tank’s comment is concerned though…I mean, I would have to know where the polling was conducted. There are polls that indicate such but I don’t know where these black people and white people are being polled…for example, let me take Chicago
I would say that Bridgeport is just as homophobic as, say may parts of the South side of Chicago; Bridgeport is defintely more homophobic than, say, Edgewater or Rogers Park.
I would say that the South Side (excluding Hyde Park) is probably more homophobic then, say, Edgewater or Roger Park, and I would say (in fact I have experienced this) that blacks that live in Edgewater/Rogers Park are on the whole less homophobic than the South Side.
As far as those other comments are concerned…
As a corollary to option a;they’re willfully ignorant. They don’t see the similarities because they don’t want to see them.
Was there a link?I think if you asked Tank to provide a link he would have to search for one first. He imagines that it must be that way.
Tank really seems to believe that people who call him out label everything they don’t like racist. He’s also talking about a “PC agenda” and that the truth/facts would be on his side, but can’t actually provide anything to support his views.
And if they do (like John in Boston on Towleroad), they provide raw crime statistical data that cannot be counted as scientific analysis and than just point to the race differences in there as if all the other factors like personal wealth, community wealth, racial profiling, racist judges, education and so on don’t count.
Oh, polls are another thing with such problems. What quality do such polls usually have? Without being able to look at how the poll has been conducted I would refuse to consider it at all. But it must be true, because it confirms their bias …
The Newsom hater has at least his nick right: They are scum.
That he thinks blacks are a very powerful voting bloc is strange to me, especially that he implies that they were the reason for the Democrats not to act on LBGT issues.
PS: I can’t post comments at Towleroad, don’t know why.
I know Autumn…I am totally on your side, I was seriously kidding, based on what I see on other websites.
