“I am not saying everyone has to be Christian; this is not a homogenous nation. What you have to be is someone who believes in a Judeo-Christian ethic, in other words, in knowing there’s a right and wrong. Not all lifestyles are equal; not all religions are equal…My Lord made it very clear to me that I’m a cultural warrior for Judeo-Christian values.” – The wisdom of Oklahomobigot, illegal pistol-packing legislator Sally Kern
Tee-hee. Of course she was referring to the HO-MO-SEXUALS in the above quote a few months ago, but as those of us who follow the radical hate agenda of the religious right on regular basis know, the fringe bigots have no problem going after divorce bans as well. And when I was pointed to this article by Blender Christopher G., it was no surprise that Oklahoma state legislator Sally Kern would be leading the charge in her state.
Scheduled for introduction in the 2010 legislative session by state Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, House Bill 2279 would restrict the “use of incompatibility as a ground for divorce” in Oklahoma.
The bill would not allow for divorce on the basis of incompatibility if:
* There are living minor children of the marriage
* The parties have been married 10 years or longer
* Either party files a written objection to the granting of a divorce
Note that the KOCO poll shows overwhelming disapproval for the bill — gee, do you think you’d see this level of disapproval (87%) for meddling with the rights of gay folks? Hmmmmm…NO.
The queen of queer-bashing, whose constituents in OKC apparently have all their needs met by Kern, remarked:
“Something is wrong when you can get out of a marriage easier than a loan for a car.”
She might want to take a gander at the state’s economy and whether her constituents can actually get a loan for a car. Sally is benevolent though — a divorce is ok if abuse or adultery are present.

not surprisedit will be a bit hard to reconcile the
can’t get divorced if one party objectswith the exception for abusive relationships. but logical inconsistencies aren’t unexpected.reminds me of some advice my sister’s crazy in-laws gave her when she was leaving her abusive husband – “look at us , we’ve hated eachother for years but we’re still together” – the reasoning being that god wanted them to stay miserable together. dude was a member of promise keepers.
uck
Here comes the 7-to-9-year itch! So, you married at 22, now you’re 29, the two of you aren’t on exactly the same page about having kids. If the Kern bill becomes law, the ready-for-kids spouse does everything, anything to slip into pregnancy. The not-so-ready spouse uses surreptitious means to prevent pregnancy and googles divorce lawyers.
So, you and your partner didn’t plan the pregnancy, but adapted to it, celebrated it, without feeling specifically compelled about marriage. Five years later, the kids are 3-1/2 and 2, and the concept of long-term commitment scares neither of you, but the Kern bill’s iron handcuffs do.
So, you both had the best of intentions as 27-year-olds who loved your church and shared all sorts of other musical, dance, and theatrical interests. Twenty-plus years later, one of you is cycling between suicide attempts and compulsively seeking out anonymous same-sex encounters; both of you recognize this is not working. Whether there are kids or not, two people look each other squarely in the eye and say, I have loved you like no other, and yet it is no longer sustainable. One of us is gay, the other straight.
Under the Kern bill, one of us must be abusive toward the other, or declare as much in a deposition or court appearance.
Truly, truly stupid. So according to Sally’s bill you can’t get divorced if you’re incompatible, unless you go out and prove it by hooking up with someone else or by slugging your spouse.
What do we call this: the put up or shut up rule?
As so often happens with clueless wingnuts, Sally went too farOklahoma is a bible belt state, which, of course, means it has a very high divorce rate. Along comes Sally, all high and cheeky from her gay-bashing feats, and decrees that divorce is the real culprit du jour. The problem is that not everyone agrees with her 100%. In an average state 50% of all marriages end in divorce. I suspect in OK, the rate is even higher.
So more than 50% of the voters in OK have been divorced at one time or another, and the majority of them for good reasons – at least to them.
Now Sally wants to put a stop to that and make people live in unhappy, or in many cases, downright dangerous marriages.
Sally just committed what is called a CLM (Career Limiting Move). If she pushes this too hard, she will lose any elections going forward.
And that’s a good thing.
Not a surprise at alljust the next step after checking gay rights….imposing more biblical law…
Perhaps the country will finally wave up to what these people intend to do…
You Go SallyStart shoving around the lives of heteros, and shove your judeo christian bat sh*t down THEIR THROATS….do that honey.
I asked my dad,who is a retired baptist minister, how it came to be that baptists (the american baptist variety, not the southern) came to all of a sudden stop haranguing that divorce was a sin. his answer: enough baptist clergy wanted to divorce. the definition of “sinnful” too often hinges on what clergy and/or the flock want it to mean, screw the bible.
I hope she realizesthat she’s in league with the devil (= teh gayz).
No one caresuntil the “majority” starts getting attacked.
Sally Kern: Pro-Death
This is Oklahoma.
Prediction: Within a year of the thing becoming law, some inverse-Mensan will decide to get around the law by ensuring that there are no “living minor children of the marriage.” I smell a rash of mysterious noodling accidents – resulting in the deaths of children of people who are on the path to divorce.
In short, her bill will hasten more than a few living minor children becoming – involuntarily of course – not living.
Why does Sally Kern want children to be killed?
Isn’t it all about the children?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Sally forgot to mentionAny wives attempting to proceed with an UNSANCTIONED divorce, will be taken to the nearest soccer field and be publicly beheaded….ya have to read the fine print.
It’s about time – I can’t wait to see all these “protect marriage” groups jump onboard. Maggie, hustle up a couple million of those Morman dollars and get thee to OK pronto.
Isn’t this what they’ve all been aiming for all along? ”Protecting marriage”? Well now’s their chance – something tells me they won’t take it up just like the fellow who’s going for the signatures to ban divorce in CA. Now that there’s an opportunity for them to actually do what they say they’re all about, they buckle.
It’s only when there’s an easy target like the GLBT community that they can raise major money $caring everyone about do they actually do anything.
And Sally, what’s this shit about only if you have kids or abuse? Your Lord and Saviour didn’t carve out any exemptions – if you’re going to shove your theocratic lifestyle down the public’s throat – you need to get on board and do it right. No divorce, stone the adulterers so they can go to hell quicker.
My favorite televangelist,Jack van Impe, used to preach vehemently about the evils of divorce, how it was destroying society, etc. Then his first wife caught him in bed with a bimbo named Rexella–who is now his second wife. And Jack don’t preach about no divorces no more.
poll results…I do find the poll results interesting. It clearly shows the blatant hypocrisy of these religious fanatics that keeps spewing the “we’ve got to protect the sanctity of marriage” diatribe. These people know damn well that the Bible doesn’t approve of divorce. Yet when push comes to shove, they don’t want their freedoms trampled on. I really want NOM’s Maggie Gags-a-lot to explain why she’s not working on a similar ‘ban divorce’ plan, since protecting marriage is her one and only agenda.
If Sally Kern Were My GrandmaI’d forge a lifetime contract and have her put away in a tight-security retirement home. Preferably in Guam or anywhere but the USA.
She ALWAYS has that “the Lord told me to drown all my grandkids!!!” look in her eyes, so I’d “take care” of her crazy ass before she “takes care” of me! LOL
I like to call it“Don’t ask, Just Do It”
I think this divorce-limiting clauseshould be tacked on as an amendment to all “Protection of Marriage” anti-gay legislation. They are logically linked. Consider it the next phase in our quest for marriage equality. If our community and supporters can take up Sally Kern’s anti-divorce quest, maybe we expose the hypocrisy in abusive legislation??
Yay Sally!!! (tongue firmly in cheek – for now)
Rexella! She is such a trip. At least Van Impe was honest enough to not try to enforce a double standard once he himself had “fallen”. So many of our local anti-gay “marriage is 1 man + 1 woman FOREVER” bigots have been divorced once (Rep. Matt Shea), twice (Larry Stickney) and three times (Steven Pidgeon). Stickney and Pidgeon in particular love to blame no-fault divorce
for the downfall of the nation.
Pure “Judeo-Christian” elitism.
We do believe what is right and what is wrong.
The Blenders: right
Sally Kern: wrong
Also, it sounds like “cultural warrior” is a PC term for jihadist.
Sounds like Robert P George is writing Sally’s scriptJudeo Chritian ETHICS, not a particular faith’s teachings, or scripture reference. No, these folks are getting all TRUTHY with making this a moral argument for broader appeal, then they start defining what ever they WANT as “common good” or “natural law.”
Don’t underestimate the damage these sick F*CKS can achieve in bad economic times making LGBTs, and now divorced people their scapegoats. They give simple answers to stupid people…a perfect FIT.
Another tactic I don’t think is a coincidenceSeems the alliance of Mormons, Catholic Bishops, and Evangelical Christians are TAKING TURNS being the spearhead of their anti gay crusades from state to state.
When Mormons take too much HEAT they hand over the lead to Catholics, then when it gets too hot for Catholics, Evangelicals take the next leg of the relay race. OUR RIGHTS are the baton they are handing off to each other.
Not all religions are equaland some religions are more equal than others. Animal Farm wasn’t just about Russian Communism. Orwell must have known some wingnuts…
Sally Kern may actually be a GIFTShe is a bull in the China shop destroying their carefully orchestrated, clever word crafted message. Her clumsiness shows the blatant bigotry of Christian bat sh*t crazies, towards other religions, which don’t find that the stuff of alliance building.
Obviously, Kern doesn’t look at statistics much85% of all persons married before the age of 25 get divorced. Why doesn’t she just put an age limit on marriage, say 30? Sorry, you can’t get a license for that until your 30, fuck off.
