Ah, yes — let’s take in this political thought piece by aging action film/TV actor, Total Gym shiller, and currently right-wing Human Events columnist Chuck Norris about health care and the Virgin Mary’s pre-natal care…
Washington certainly has reached a new low by forcing American citizens who oppose abortion to pay for abortions via their taxes in this massively comprehensive way. Is it intentionally trying to spark the next Boston Tea Party? When our greatest values are thrown under the omnibus, how do they expect us to respond? (Washington’s wild spending and abandonment of traditional values and our Founders’ vision is what prompted me to add a 64-page expansion to the new paperback version of my New York Times best-seller Black Belt Patriotism, being released in January through Fidelis Books. See the new Web site at http://www.BlackBeltPatriotism……[A]s we near the eve of another Christmas, I wonder: What would have happened if Mother Mary had been covered by Obamacare? What if that young, poor and uninsured teenage woman had been provided the federal funds (via Obamacare) and facilities (via Planned Parenthood, etc.) to avoid the ridicule, ostracizing, persecution and possible stoning because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancy? Imagine all the great souls who could have been erased from history and the influence of mankind if their parents had been as progressive as Washington’s wise men and women! Will Obamacare morph into Herodcare for the unborn?
Are we sure Bruce Lee didn’t kick Chuck in the head instead of pulling out his chest hair? Hmmm…let’s take a look at that (and the fashionable sideburns of Chuck).

If Chuckie is so opposed to tax dollars funding moral wrongs …… why isn’t he demanding that my tax dollars not be used to fund wars?
If we are going to have a Hyde amendment for abortion, why not one for wars? Just like exceptions for rape, incest, and the health of the mother, we’ll have exceptions for invasion and/or carpet-bombing of the homeland. Those who want coverage for elective wars (i.e. “wars on demand”) can purchase private defense insurance policies or riders.
Chuckie is just a steaming pile of moral hypocrisy.
He is also either stunningly ignorant or stunningly dishonest to trot out the tired, defeated you-might-be-killing-the-next-Jesus-or-Beethoven tripe without pointing out the obvious truth that a child could just as easily grow up to be the next Hitler, Pol Pot, or even George W. Bush.
Wars are acceptable for the “Right” and some who claim to be “Left”Wars are acceptable for the “Right” and some who claim to be “Left”
Wars are acceptable for the “Right” whether they are;
Christian Conservatives and/or Republicans…spreading Jesus’ message = means crushing Islam;
“Regular” Republicans are Imperialists = means crushing those in the way;
“Right” or “Blue Dog should not be associated with the “Left”….Neo-Liberalism is just as bad as Neo-Conservatism = means globalization, imperialism, raping countries of their natural resources, including humans.
So, only the “Real” Left is against spending money on war or war for that matter.
Neither Democrats nor Republicans, in this day and age, can claim to be on the “Left”.
The Democrats have been making more and more money by acting like Republicans, getting more funds from corporations, moving more to the “Right”. Republican Barry Goldwater would be called a “Liberal” or “Communist” these days.
John Kerry, Democrat, supposed crazy Liberal from Massachusetts is, from what I read earlier this year, the largest money maker on war.
Unfortunately, one has to be considered a Socialist to be against war, corporate powers over humans, human rights, equal rights, freedom from a religion mandated by the government, and believing in that “Communist” “Socialist” saying…”We The People”.
p.s . I am a Socialist, it is not the “Right” that created the unions that gave workers time to take bathroom breaks at work, time off for being sick, and many other things people take for granted these days.
It was the fear of “We The People” that got McCarthy and RFK to have witch hunts….spread fear of “Communists” and those who want to take-over America.
So Socialist, during the Depression, was demonized and still is.
“We The People” is a “Left”; “Liberal”; “Socialist”; and yes “Communist” ideology. Communism – Community = “We The People”!
What would have happened if Mother Mary had been covered by Obamacare?then we wouldn’t have christians.
and that would be sweeeeet.
no-one around to tell me why I’m going to hell.
Apparently, Chuck Norris is just as ignorant as he looks. They had some strange birth control methods back then, but they had them. The earliest record of birth control use is an ancient Egyptian set of instructions on creating a contraceptive pessary.
My favorite reaction …… to this ridiculousness was found on Facebook.
“I don’t know, maybe Mary would have given birth in a hospital with a proper midwife and crib instead of a stable with donkeys and cows and a mangy manger.”
Yup, that’s the ticket.
BlueJean on Shakesville explains why the question of “What if Mary had aborted Jesus” is bullshit anyway“Apparently, Chuck the Christian doesn’t know his own theology. Mary was conceived immaculate, for the special purpose of giving birth to the Messiah, so “What if Mary had chosen to abort Jesus?” is like asking “What if you were Superman, but had no superpowers?” or “What if you were invisible, but everyone could see you?”"
And let’s discuss the actual historyWe love the picture of the poor couple, but every indication is that both Mary and Joseph came from reasonably well-off families. So they were not poor.
Additionally, Mary had been visited by Angels explaining to her that she was carrying the savior…so even if she had “Obamacare” I doubt she would have aborted.
But let’s look at the argument from the perspective of Mary not knowing she was carrying Jesus. Norris, and the krazy kristian kooks, all assume that everyone who could get an abortion would get one. Lot’s of people today can get abortions, and elect not to.
But red7eric found the best answer of all, maybe she would have been in a hospital.
But Mary did have a choice.Luke 1:26-38: Gabriel tells Mary the Holy Spirit will come to her and she will become pregnant with the Son of God. Mary then says, “May it be as you have said.” (NIV) She agrees to be Jesus’ mother before she conceives, so it wouldn’t matter whether or not she had access to an abortion. Jesus was a planned pregnancy.
The current issue of UU World has a theological argument for abortion: Breath of Life by Scotty McLennan (http://www.uuworld.org/ideas/articles/151714.shtml).
What if Mary had contemporary American medical care?1. Joseph and Mary were from Galilee, but were travelling to Bethlehem in Judea – in modern US terms, that’s like going from New Hampshire to Connecticut – the same region of the country/empire but a different state/province, so even if they had health insurance it may not have covered them in Bethlehem, where the birth took place.
2. Travelling such a long way while heavily pregnant was a serious risk, and most (if not all) health insurers would doubtless refuse to pay out on the basis that “avoidable” risks had been taken.
3. As a skilled labourer, Joseph would have been in the upper band of the working class, so his pay would not have been particularly high. He was also young, self-employed, recently married and probably still building up his business, so it’s unlikely he’d have been able to afford a good healthcare package.
4. Access to good healthcare plans would have been severely restricted due to their ethnicity (they weren’t Roman citizens) and religious beliefs (the Romans distrusted the Jewish faith as it had no room for the Roman pantheon). Their situation would have been comparable to that of Blacks during the century following the American Civil War, and not just in healthcare.
OMG, what a brilliant line of reasoning!I never would have thought of using imaginary characters to bolster my arguments! That God for Chuck Norris.
What if Zeus had had Obamacare? Then he wouldn’t have had to give birth to Athena through his head but could have done it in a safe, scientifically valid manner.
What if Cronus had had Obamacare? Then after he ate his own children, the state would have paid for a good antacid for him.
What if Olive Oyl had Obamacare? Then she would have given birth to Swee’Pea in a safe, understanding way instead of having to pretend he wasn’t her child. Same for Daisy Duck and Donald’s “nephews” (always assuming that wasn’t just a cover-up for Donald’s NAMBLA membership).
Oh, what riches Norris has uncovered for us. We can make any damnfool argument we like just by finding the appropriate fictional characters. God Bless America!
ShrugIf Mary had aborted, one of the other messiahs that came out of the desert every other month in that era would have gotten the followers and the publicity.
One wonders what effect it would have had when Paul had his Damascus Road seizure though. Would he have gone Rabid Fanboy about a different messiah? What would we look like today if the Essenes were the dominant faith? (with relaxed celibacy rules, of course, otherwise, they go the way of the Shakers)
Took the words right out of my mouthHe is also either stunningly ignorant or stunningly dishonest to trot out the tired, defeated you-might-be-killing-the-next-Jesus-or-Beethoven tripe without pointing out the obvious truth that a child could just as easily grow up to be the next Hitler, Pol Pot, or even George W. Bush.
Nor do people who trot out this tired chestnut stop to consider how stupid they make their own God sound. If he’s supposed to be all-knowing (not sometimes-knowing, not occasionally-knowing) then why assign such a child to that fate.
Oh wait. What happened to his own son again? That’s right.
Oh ChuckLeave poor Jesus and Mary out of your ignorant reasoning.
… or the other not-so-obvious truth…If Beethoven had never been born, we would never have missed him. We’re looking at our world and in our imaginations subtracting Beethoven from it. There surely were other composers born about the same time as Lovely Ludwig Van. If we don’t remember them the way we remember him, it’s just an accident of history. Without Beethoven’s music for comparison, these other musicians would have had his reputation.
This is really the unspoken fear these people have. What they’re afraid to say out loud is, “If I had never been born, I would never be missed.”
Just reacting to the clipI was rofl watching the Return of the Dragon clip. It’s been so very many years, I’d totally forgotten what a pelt El Chucko had back then!!
And from that theological angleYou could argue that God believes that women should have a choice. And it’s not like Jewish law doesn’t make it clear that foetuses aren’t people.
I sure hopeBig Sideburns had some health care insurance in place before that beat down.
Wouldn’t want him to rely on that evil Obamacare.
What is astonishing is congress people have picked up this ridiculous argumentThere are some very very low IQs on the RNC side of the aisle.
