The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund is calling it for Parker. Congratulations mayor-elect Parker!
Houston voters tonight have chosen an out lesbian as their next mayor, making the city the largest in the U.S. to elect an openly LGBT chief executive.Annise Parker, who was endorsed by the Victory Fund, won her runoff election against Gene Locke, a former city attorney, after a year-long campaign that drew national attention both because of the potential for a history-making outcome and because of coordinated anti-gay campaigns designed to prevent her victory.
Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund, said the win was significant not just for Houston, but for all LGBT Americans. ”This is a watershed moment in American politics. One of the largest cities in the country will be headed by an out lesbian, chosen by people who voted for her because of her experience and competence. Houston rejected the politics of division and the extremists failed,” Wolfe said. ”After a bittersweet political year for the LGBT community, it’s nice to be able to smile this wide.”
Parker thanked the Victory Fund: “I am so grateful to the Victory Fund and its supporters for believing in this campaign from the beginning. This race was about the future of Houston, and whether we will face that future proud to be an open, welcoming, and fair-minded city. Tonight Houstonians said yes to a future like that, and I am glad the Victory Fund helped make that happen.”
Wolfe also thanked the Houston’s GLBT Political Caucus, which was once headed by Parker. ”The GLBT Political Caucus put a lot of hard work into this election, and nobody wanted this win more than they did. It’s a great organization, and they deserve our thanks and appreciation,” Wolfe said.
From Annise herself:
Thank You HoustonTo my Friends, Supporters and all Houstonians,
In this campaign, I met many Houstonians.
I met fathers worried about finding a good job. I met mothers worried about crime. I met young men and women who only want a chance for a good education. Families worried about taxes. Homeowners who just want to protect the neighborhood they love. Hear me: the city is on your side.
I learned about the problems and the needs and the hopes of our city at the neighborhood level, where families work and live. This election has changed the world for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, just as this election is about transforming Houstonians’ lives for the better.
Let us begin from this moment to join as one community, united in the goal of making Houston the city it could be, should be, can be and will be. That’s what this city will be about under my administration.
Houston is a city that invites entrepreneurs – and shelters evacuees. A diverse city. A city built on dreams powered by hard work, creativity, common sense and cooperation.
Public service is a noble calling, and I appreciate that Gene Locke was willing to answer this call. He is a man who has been deeply involved in our community for many years and I hope he will continue to serve Houston. I wish for him and his family the very best.
Let me close by saying that while this is an exciting night, it is also a humbling experience. Our citizens deserve our best effort and I pledge to give them an administration that values honesty, integrity and transparency above all else. My administration will be concerned with only one interest: the public good.
Thank you so much. Together, we will make a difference.

Go Houston!!!When we visited friends there in August, we saw Parker signs everywhere. I’m not surprised she won, but I’m still thrilled. Houston is the 4th-largest city in the country.
Go Annise!Living just outside city limits I wasn’t able to vote, but I am SO GLAD that Annise Parker will be the mayor of Houston. It makes me feel better about living here now.
Very cheering newsI live in Houston, contributed to Parker’s campaign and of course voted for her. I was deeply disturbed by the campaign run by her opponent, Gene Locke. As late as today, I got a computer message begging me to protect traditional marriage and family values and vote for Locke. I’m so proud of this city for electing the best candidate.
I’m not from the Houston area, and am not familiar with all the issues…… but considering that some homophobic organizations and individuals targeted Annise simply because she is lesbian, I am very glad that the citizens of Houston embraced her.
do you still have those messages?if so, cut and paste them here for posterity.
and…congratulations!
ANNISE! I TOLD YA’LL SHE WOULD WIN!I have known Annise for over a decade and there never was any doubt in my mind she would be mayor of Houston someday. Nobody has been a more devoted public servant to Houston and nobody is smarter than Annise at running this city.
This win redeems Texas from it’s terrible trend of acting totally f-ing crazy and will hopefully send a message to the U.S. that there are Democratic strongholds in this state. Now, Houston’s outgoing Democratic Mayor, Bill White, will be challenging the right-wing whackos in a bid for governor. There is hope for Texas yet.
we interrupt this programA new story on Buju Banton, whom you’ve met in previous entries on this site, h/t Joemygod. Apparently the rapper in custody in Florida, the Feds say on cocaine-distribution charges. Oops.
We return you now to your regularly scheduled celebration, in progress. “An exciting night” indeed, and congratulations to the mayor-elect.
It’s been a good night indeed!Annise has won and Buju is in jail!
This IS wonderful news! And congratulations to Ms. Parker, her family, and her campaign staff! I’m sure she’ll do an excellent job (don’t we always do that?).
Next steps for the movement: Mayor of a world class U.S. city – L.A. Chicago, NYC, Washington D.C. It’s been done in Berlin, London, and Paris, why not in the U.S.?
Also, a Senate seat – closet cases Larry Craig and Lindsay Graham don’t count. Or maybe a Governorship.
let’s save our glee for the new mayorAnd not crow too much about this person. Shady Freud, and all that. Still, how the nasty have fallen!
BUJU – the next poster child for the Christian ReichJust wait!
something else to raise your champagne forCalifornia has a new, openly-gay, Speaker of the State Assembly as of this weekend. Busy weekend for LGBT news, it seems, and this story is worth reiterating in this thread.

Great newsGetting our 3rd gay mayor in NC last month was pretty great, but to see such a big city in a state like Texas is just awesome.
I’ve been getting e-mails about this election for a while now from a few different Stonewall Democrat groups down there about phone banking and other efforts they were doing to support her. Here is their victory announcement:

If there is hope for the democratic party, I see it with groups like this that work towards positive change while calling for accountability.
BRAVA!I read the anti-gay cr*p being spewed in the race was from an associate of her DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER, I believe gay americablog had the story.
Rick Perry must be having a particularly ugly HISSY FIT tonight
Three late, great Texas women are smiling….
First, the great orator and stateswoman…and Houston native…Barbara Jordan who, sadly, went to her grave feeling she could never publicly talk about being gay and the woman she loved for over two decades, Nancy Earl. I hope Ms. Earl is still living and smiling, too, and perhaps saying to herself, “Oh, Barbara, you shoulda been here tonight!”
Then, humorist with a tongue of steel and a heart of gold, Molly Ivins…raised in Houston…and a frequent defender of the LGBT community.
Finally, the great Ann Richards who had the Texas governorship stolen from her by the Rove-Bush Gang spreading rumors she was gay as Karlotta Rove perfected her queer-baiting political tactics that she’d started while still in college in order to win the presidency of the College Young Republicans [beating publicly closeted gay Terry Dolan who would go on to destroy the political careers of several pro-gay US Senators before he died of AIDS which his family was humiliated by and tried to cover up].
Brava Ms. Parker! These great Texas women would be mighty proud of you for, as Molly and Ann would probably say, “kickin’ ass”…and LGBTs everywhere are mighty proud of you, too!!!!
Yes!This just made my weekend. Way to go!
Feel the homomentumBiggest city yet and in Texas to boot. Progress is being made even though it may seem difficult or painful sometimes.
Feels great to celebrate a WIN!!!!Not from Houston, but Annise impresses me with her intellect and down to earth personality. I think she will do Houston proud!
Now let me get this straight hahahha…Parker can be handily elected Mayor of the nation’s fourth largest city based on a public trust with her constituents. But….she is not allowed to or responsible enough to marry her lifelong partner which is a private matter. And not related to public input.
Anyone else blown away by the sheer stupidity of this disconnect?
One of my favorite musicals!Love that song.
God, let’s hope so.Pretty much anything that makes the guv unhappy makes me happy.
Something familiar, something peculiar…?Weighty affairs will just have to wait.
I’ll bet he’s so angry he drops his hair spray.
Houston is a world class city…And has proven it time and again like last night.
Oops, I meant automated messageI wrote “computer” message when I meant automated (recorded) phone message. I did not save this, as I answered the call and listened to the bitter end. Locke’s anti-gay campaign just felt creepy to a lot of straight voters I know. Parker’s campaign did have a very effective response, however: “Lawyer…Lobbyist…Locke.”
These three womenThank you so much for posting this. To see the faces of these women all in one place and on the morning after Annise and Houston’s victory is almost overwhelming.
