crossposted on Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters
Apparently we lgbts in the United States and Europe are to blame for the harsh anti-gay laws they are trying to pushing in Uganda.
At least that's the case according to anti-lgbt activist Scott Lively.
An article with the right-wing LifesiteNews.com said the following:
While a proposed and much-criticized anti-homosexuality law in Uganda is definitely too harsh, the law comes as a direct response to the heavy-handed pressure from international gay-activist politicians on Uganda to accept homosexuality as normal, according to one Christian expert who was recently in the African country to testify against the current wording of the bill. In fact, as Dr. Scott Lively, the President of Defend the Family pointed out, the preamble to the bill, and the bill itself contain numerous references to stopping international pressure on Uganda to accept Western sexual values that are abhorrent to Ugandan culture.
. . . Dr. Lively, a pro-family activist and attorney based in California was in Uganda in March to testify before Ugandan legislators now considering the legislation. In an interview with LifeSiteNews (LSN), Dr. Lively explained that the impetus for the bill was “a lot of external interference from European and American gay activists attempting to do in Uganda what they've done around the world – homosexualize that society.” One of their main concerns, explained Lively, “are the many male homosexuals coming in to the country and abusing boys who are on the streets.”
Of course Lively provides no evidence of his charges, especially the claim about gays coming into Uganda to rape street children. And I still can't shake my shock at the implications of his statements.
So we are to blame because we are “forcing” people to “accept homosexuality.”Why am I reminded of the scene in the motion picture Mississippi Burning where the judge gives a light sentence to the men who attacked a black church because, in his opinion, they were “provoked by outside agitators.”
According to Box Turtle Bulletin, while Lively complains that the legislation “goes too far,” he shares some responsibility for it in the first place:
Lively was also, along with Exodus International board member Don Schmierer and Caleb Lee Brundidge of Richard Cohen’s International Healing Foundation, one of the three American speakers at the conference in February which led to the current proposed legislation in Uganda.
I would be remiss to not point out that this is the same Scott Lively who was one of the speakers at that comically pathetic rally two weeks ago where various ignorant entities complained that the new hate crimes legislation would lead to pastors being jailed for preaching against homosexuality; a notion completely disingenuous in Lively's case because according to the LifeSiteNews.com article, he actually supports laws against the lgbt community in general:
He testified to lawmakers in the Ugandan Assembly Hall that having legislation against homosexuality on the books is important since it protects against those who would advocate in public and in schools that homosexuality is positive.
I should mention a few other things about Lively.
He runs Abiding Truth Ministries which is considered as an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Lively is also is connected to two more of the 11 organizations considered to be anti-gay hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. And these groups do not have that designation simply because they oppose homosexuality. They have the designation because they are organizations that go beyond mere disagreement with homosexuality by subjecting gays and lesbians to campaigns of personal vilification.
Lively is the same man who wrote the discredited book, The Pink Swastika, which inaccurately connected lgbts to the Nazi Party in Germany and the Holocaust.
And he is the same man who tried to sanitize the reputation of discredited researcher Paul Cameron. Cameron, amongst other things, published junk science which incorrectly connected homosexuality and pedophilia.
No one should be surprised about that last point. According to Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Cameron and Lively are two of a kind:
We see Lively the same way we see Paul Cameron; the two of them in our view consciously promote easily provable false defamations. They don’t seem to care at all what the truth is.”
And unfortunately, as we can see in Uganda, the lies that both tell are having lots of influence.

PatheticThese hateful fools want government sanction to hate but then cry foul when they’re held accountable for their views. Well, free speech carries responsibility, boys. If you’re not willing to be identified with your hate speech then keep your damn mouth shut. You can’t expect respect if you want to foment hate but then turn around & whine when you’re called out for it.
SO over these creeps.
“The Family” on Fresh AirThis week, Fresh Air had an interview with Jeff Sharlet who has done incredible research on “The Family,” who actually has specific ties to Uganda and what is currently happening there. Check out the story! It’s a wonderful interview!

Also connections to The Family, Rick Warren, Anglican ChurchApparently the same secretive religious group that Hillary Clinton belongs to, The Family, Ugandan authorities responsible for this bill also belong to. Frederick Clarkson over at Talk to Action also describes the Ugandan gay execution bill as part of a proxy war by the American religious right on American mainline Protestant organizations. In short, every American hate group obsessed with gays seems to be finding something useful in this bill. So sad to see Uganda acting as a puppet for American gangs, but the country has little left in the way of self-respect, government-wise. They’re just another gang member.
partial transcripthere’s a partial transcript of that interview.
Did Lively leave Springfiled, MA?Back in 2007 Lively relocated to Springfield, MA to be part of the New Generation church run by his Watchmen on the Walls buddy Alexey Ledyaev. Sounds from your post like he is no longer there. Wonder what happened. Power struggle with Ledyaev? No reason to stay after the MA anti-equality marriage amendment was defeated? Missed the boyfriend he left behind in CA?
“Dr. Lively”Since when has he jumped from “Scott Lively” to “Dr. Lively”?
A $5 Wal-Mart bible doesn’t allow you that title.
Oh this is rich!Read more of the article and he’s not opposed to the letter of the law, so much as the enforcement of it!
He’s okay with draconian regulations provided the courts actually penalize LGBT with conversion therapy (which I’m sure he’d be happy to provide, at a price)
“gays coming into Uganda to rape street children”I wonder how many priests have “com[e] into Uganda.”
If Only…If only Christians stopped pushing their beliefs on others, and forcing people to accept Christianity; I wouldn’t be forced to feed them to wild animals.

Did Dr. Lively pass the bar?
interesting…they are the ones over in Uganda all of the time running conferences, sponsoring workshops, and holding prayer meetings, and we are the ones to blame!
forgive me if i don’t understand the logic…
Dr. LawyerPeople with JDs who insist on being called ‘Dr.’ tend to fall into one of three categories:
1) People who have some other doctorate (Several people I went to law school with already had MDs; I know several people with JDs who are working on PhDs – and I’m working on a PhD, but I’m not there yet – and I know a couple of history profs who got law degrees after they got their PhDs.)
2) People whose JD and/or legal experience is from a culture/legal system where it is customary – or at least not out of the ordinary – to refer to attorneys as ‘Doctor’
3) People with JDs who have either been disbarred or who have never passed a bar exam to begin with.
I can, of course, think of exceptions.
I once considered demanding that one of my professors address me as ‘Doctor’ after she exhibited a stunning degree of ignorance on a legal issue related to the area of history that was being discussed and she refused to acknowledge that someone without a Ph.D. – albeit with a J.D., two law licenses and more scholarly publications than her – might be more knowledgeable on the point.
Even then, I felt that if I was to make that demand I would be, at best, a poseur.
I don’t know where Lively falls into all of this – but given the general caliber of the christianist character, I’ll presume the worst.
His logic,Functionally, is that it’s your fault for existing.
“Logic”By his “logic” it’s our fault, not just for existing, but for existing and not recognizing our designated place and allowing ourselves to be shamed/abused/killed to appease their feelings of inferiority. It’s all because we’re just too uppity and demand all sorts of human rights and stuff.
Yes, he passed the bar.His CA bar number is #203081. If this is the correct Scott Lively, he passed the CA bar in 1999 but his status became inactive in February of this year. His current address is listed as Springfield, MA. According to the MA Board of Bar Overseers Lively’s status in MA is active.
The culprit for all this…..The looney toons Jesus freaks like Sarah and her ilk are funding and pushing this.
Enjoy.
