From the Gainesville Sun (emphasis added):

Transgender rights: The Tampa City Council approved a transgender rights ordinance Thursday in the face of opposition similar to what the Gainesville City Commission faced in early 2008 when it approved a similar anti-discrimination ordinance…

…City Commissioner Craig Lowe said that when the Tampa Council went to approve the ordinance, it changed the definition of “gender identity” to more closely mirror Gainesville’s ordinance, which defined the term as an inner sense of being that a person is a different gender than their sex at birth.

Autumn Sandeen as CoffeegirlEven after two years and a rejected referendum attempting to overthrow the ordinance, Gainesville’s ordinance is still the subject of intense scrutiny from some members of the public.

Richard Selwach, who is running for mayor against Lowe, spoke at Thursday’s commission meeting recommending an amendment to Gainesville’s ordinance that would require people who felt they qualified under the “gender identity” definition to have to register with the city.

Great. This reminds me of Marvel’s X-Men comic books, where the mutants had to register with the government as mutants.

So, in this real world application of registering American citizens, would African-Americans need to register with the city as African-Americans? Gays and lesbians as gays or lesbians? Disabled people as disabled? Christians as Christians? Etcetera, etcetera?

No Or Both Gender Male Female Restroom Sign - Gender Neutral Restroom Bathroom SignNope, just trans people. What Richard Selwatch proposes is registering trans people in a manner similar in scope to how sexual predators are registered in Florida.

Let’s call this what is: Blatant prejudice and bigotry. It’s a discriminatory measure that a Gainesville, Florida mayoral candidate proposes be codified into law — codified to identify trans people as potential public restroom predators of women and children.

So, instead of calling this Richard Selwatch proposed ordinance the Mutant Registration Act, we can call it instead the Mutant Transgender Registration Ordinance. It’s trans people needing to register as a dangerous criminals without trans people first needing to commit any dangerous criminal acts — kind of like how mutants had to register as mutants in the X-Men comic books without mutants first needing to commit any dangerous criminal acts.
