“I don’t like it. The cables (TV) have a lot to do with it.”
– Former President George H.W. Bush on the lack of civility on the Left, particularly towardfailed spawnhis son, W.
The first President Bush raises the bar of political discourse even as he criticizes it. In an interview with CBS, Dear Leader’s avenged daddy spouts out hypocrisy that is so entertaining that one longs for those simple days before his son destroyed the economy and our relations with the rest of the world.
While he said he does not believe in personal name-calling, he singled out MSNBC personalities Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow calling them “sick puppies.”
“The way they treat my son and anyone who’s opposed to their point of view is just horrible,” Mr. Bush said.
When asked about the abuse being heaped by the Right onto the current occupant of the White House, Bush Number One goes flaccid.
Mr. Bush said verbal attacks on Mr. Obama “sometimes crosses the lines of civility.” He also said it crosses “party lines and ideological lines.”
Mr. Bush does not believe most of the attacks on Mr. Obama are racially motivated. He said, “You might find some racists out there but I don’t think the attacks per se have to do that he’s an African American.”
Was Poppy awake during the 2008 campaign through to the present day? Anyway, Rachel had a response to the elder Bush…

Oh, shut the fuck up.
Don’t think we forgot being called “un-American” (among other things close enough to being called “Osama Bin Laden”) whenever somebody disagreed with your chimp of a son.
Oh yeah, and Chimp’s daddy tried to have all you gays executed in the 80′s, too.
Who Told the Old Coot to Say This?Maybe his BFF, the Rev. Sun Yung Moon?
Poppy looks ancient. I swear, he and Babs the Impaler struck a deal with the Devil to be kept alive via necromancy.
They’re easily 250 years old now. But as with all things in the supernatural realm, one day soon, Poppy will just disintegrate into dust before our very eyes.
Guess his cables dont have his favorite porn channel…Let’s face it, he hasn’t seen Fox News if he thinks CNN is crossing a line or being too harsh.
Also he has to be on some of the drugs his administration confiscated if he thinks that the retoric used aginst the current president isn’t racially motivated.
Or maybe he just had a stroke and no one’s noticed.
Just saying…When I first heard Poppa Bush’s comments, the news blip on the radio skipped over his statement that he had heard similar negatve attacks from the liberal left and could “name names”. What remained was only the part about the venomous discourse and Maddow’s and Oberman’s names. I almost sh*t my pants with incredulous disbelief that anyone would draw them out in any reasonable comparison to the Limbaughs, InsHannitys, and Becks of the self-righteous right.
But, when you consider that he was drawing out a couple of the progressive side’s most eloquent talking heads in comparison to the unnamed right’s (do we really need the list of names?), it made perfect sense.
Regardless of whether one’s child was president, I can easily understand how any criticism of that child, regardless of how well-reasoned, accurate and appropriate, could only be heard as a visceral attack to any parent.
You mark my wordsLiz Cheney is running for office. The GOP has anointed her their savior.
“the cables”Reminds me of when his dumbass son complained about “the internetS”…I guess everything is bigger in Texas…
Rachel? Uncivil?I’m always amazed when people lump Rachel Maddow into the same category as these other hosts simply because she has a clear point of view because it is honestly the only thing she has in common with the blustering talking heads of the right and occasionally the left. I love Keith, I think he’s right on most of the time, but he is so over the top on occasion that in style at least he resembles the wackjobs on the right (although the fact that he doesn’t make shit up sets him apart from Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity/O’Reilly).
Rachel, however, is always cool, calm, and collected. I’ve never seen her be rude to anyone, she doesn’t yell at her guests, and she doesn’t talk over people. When she had that asshat Frum on her show and he rather viciously attacked her, she was unfailingly polite to him even while taking his arguments apart. If anything, she should be recognized for bringing civility back to cable television discourse.
Re: Poppy Bush: Rachel and Keith are ‘sick puppies’; blames ‘the cables’ for discourse woes The Bushes are both “sick puppies,” in their own right, to say the very least.
One quibble, though, Pam, as far as “destroyed the economy” … that was — and is as much now as it has been before — a bipartisan affair.

The “cables”?I wonder if he trolls the “internets” too? SHUT THE HELL UP ya old relic. YOU started the nasty discourse on the right with Lee Atwater, Willie Horton and your continued attacks on Dukakis, your nonsense about “card carrying member of the ACLU” crap and Liberal this, liberal that. YOU started it, poppy asshole. Go back to Kennebunkport and keep Babs and her pearls and the rest of your shitty family the hell away from everyone else.
Good pointDon’t get me wrong – I love when good, strong liberals get uncivil and ‘go medieval on some conservative ass’, but there are liberals who have the ability to do it whilst being non-smarmy nice.
And Rachel Maddow is all of them.
Being called ‘uncivil’ by a lump of crypt-fodder who, but for the unmitigated evil of Lee Atwater, by 2009 would be completely (and rightly) forgotten by all except those who occasionally have cause to use the “The Little Things” episode of Freaks and Geeks in the transgender history classes they teach is one of the better compliments that one can be paid.
Her interview with Tim Phillipsis case in point. She flat out told him she doesn’t like what he does and says she hopes he fails (at what he does as a corporate christianist bigot) but wished him much success, personally, not professionally.
I’ve never seen her so angry but she kept her cool and ripped him apart by dismantling everything he said to try to defend himself. It was brilliant.
Not only thatbut being constantly interrupted by him and his cowardly attempts to paint her as the villain. ANY lesser person would have gone off on him.
Do NOT mess with Rachel Maddow. She is smarter than you and she is COLD under pressure.
If so, more proofthe GOP is stupid as hell.
Here’s a trip down memory lane!Remember when Daddy Bush showed surprise as how a odern cash register with UPC scanner worked?
I also remember that when asked about the price of grocers, ol’ Poppy was a mile off on the prices??
The nut certainly didn’t fall far from the tree!
