After meeting with LGBT activists in San Diego, Buju Banton shook hands with them and proceeded to say he’s not only not down with the gays, he’s ready to rumble.
“This is a fight, and as I said in one of my songs ‘there is no end to the war between me and faggot’ and it’s clear. The same night after I met with them (gay associates), they pepper-sprayed the concert. So what are you trying to tell me? I owe dem nothing, they don’t owe I nothing.”
So apparently one bad fags = all fags are bad and all should die. Nice. Karen Ocamb at LGBT POV has more, including an email from LA Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lorri Jean urging San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty making it clear that Banton not only made no concessions at the meeting and that the boycott should continue:
Unfortunately, your meeting and the publicity around it is being used as a justification by clubs and promoters to now reverse their former stands and re-book Banton. This is turning into an unmitigated disaster and unless you take firm and unequivocal action immediately I fear that the damage done may become irreparable.
Not only has the San Francisco meeting exacerbated matters in L.A. and San Diego but we’re starting to hear from colleagues around the country who have been working on Banton matters for a very long time that the same thing is happening there. Clubs are re-booking him and using the meeting that he had with you as the reason why it is now permissible. In fact, perhaps you don’t know, but that Petrelis photo and his blog post are being promoted on a webpage promoting Buju’s tour and selling tickets to his concerts!!!!
In terms of confirming Banton’s commitment to anti-gay hate and that he’s still condemning gays; here’s a video from last month where he says “There is no end to the war between me and faggots!”:

Who is this guy again?Based on his
“I owe dem nothing, they don’t owe I nothing.”
He could sweat pepper spray for all I care.
It’s actually good newsHis promoters have been peddling the myth of his supposed conversion to the ways of civilized man to defend against the calls to cancel his tour. It’s now indisputable that’s BS.
Buju never heard of youBut if you want to F*CK with 9% of EVERY city in the world
bring it
Yes… there IS an end:
…and that war ENDS when Buju is living in a cardboard box on the streets of Kingston!
I wonder if it’ll be worth it?

This is not a new conversationA 2006 Keith Boykin interview with Staceyann Chin, a Jamaican-born lesbian activist, about homophobia in Jamaica, Buju Banton, and the race-class-gender intersection.
This is not a new phenomenon with either Buju Banton or homophobia in Jamaican culture. Why is our movement not talking with Staceyann Chin more? Pam, I would LOVE to see an interview with her here in the Blend. Her insights into the race-class-gender intersection illuminate a lot of what we talk about here.
Speaking of which, stumbled across this.
And Jasmyne Cannick was sayingwas saying that in order to for the (white) gay community to get along better with the black community, maybe us gay people should strive to understand better and not be so fucking paranoid.
Yeah, right Jas, you lose big time on this one. Investigation over. Complete. Finis. Through.
I understand this perfectly well. Buju is still a bigot that should not be forgiven or understood at this time.
STOP reaching across the aisle to religious zealotsHELLLLOOOOOO…Obama…..Gays… STOP reaching across the aisle to religious zealots……you will NEVER make them believe you are equal !!!!
Michael Petrelis was PLAYEDTalking to this creep was a complete waste of time.
Never trust those who make money off of gay hateBuju Banton is bringing home a LOT of clams at our expense. Why on earth did anyone bother having a meeting with him?

I don’t know about that There is something to be said for visibly going through the motions of reaching out: it becomes that much more obvious to everyone watching where the problem really lies. It is no longer possible for any sane person to claim that Banton does not, at present, hate gays, or to dismiss his lyrics as the product of ignorance and homophobic culture. He was given a chance to understand and a chance to mend his ways, and he deliberately and decisively blew it off and got right back to hating.
Maybe Banton’s hate was obvious to everyone. Maybe there were so many things one could point to in his past that no one, from queer activists to straight cis-folk ignorant and uninterested in queer issues, could possibly miss it. If not, though, this is pretty good piece of evidence to point at and say, “See, this is why his concerts should be cancelled. This is another example of the hate that is out there, right now in the real world. Now what do you plan on doing about it?”
Or else it endswhen he picks a fight with the wrong seven-foot drag queen and somebody catches the smackdown on video.
That’s exactly what I said……….……..when Pam reported on this earlier in the week.
“there is no end to the war”Sure there is Buju. A group of Lesbian witches are doing spells to wilt yor willie. When they’re finished with it, you will know. No bulge in the trousers on stage, so you’d best start wearing loose slacks. And your voice? Prepare to develop a lisp.
No end to the war, Buju. You called for it, we’re just delivering.

Played big timeDo you suppose that Buju arranged the pepper spraying to be able to place blame elsewhere? Pepper spray isn’t our style. Bernaisse spray, maybe…
