Blend reader Alexander tells us that ONE Kalamazoo is airing its first television ad. Quite exciting! He says
Kalamazoo is a small city, and ONE Kalamazoo has an even smaller budget, but the ad is remarkably well done, and I think everyone should see it. I love the coverage you folks do on the Maine and Washington ballot measures, and I hope you can post the ad so that our little corner of the world can finally get the equal protection we all deserve.
I agree Alexander. Kalamazoo needs its non-discrimination ordinance, so let’s have a look at the ad. If you like it, you can donate here to help keep it on the air.

Yikes!
Special protections sounds a lot like special rights, favorite meme of the haters.
The callout box shows that the ordinance prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Yes, gender outlaws will feel the biggest positive benefit here, but gender conformists will be protected too.
Too late to change the voice-over?
Triangle FoundationI’m happy to report that the Triangle Foundation is now sending some emails out about this fight.
“Too late to change the voice-over? “I’ve listened to the ad three times now and the only place I hear or see “special” is in the opening sentence, “Admit it, Kalamazoo is special.” Nothing about “special protections.”
Looks like a nice, professionally-made, generic political ad. And you can never have enough really cute babies, too.
I thought the ad was perfectly fine, and I think it fits a smaller townthe word special was descibing Kalamazoo, not rights.
fantastic.straight forward, inclusive and to the point.
Kudos to Kalamazoo.
Actually itsthe line is
“adding BASIC protections for people who are gay or transgender.”

And to add an additional plug….

Every donation is appreciated and goes to help protect the LGBT community in Kalamazoo from discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations.
Changes I suggested were apparently made …It’s a different person’s voice on the version above that I just played (10/15, 3:50 p.m.), and the “special protections” that I carefully played and listened to twice when this was first posted on 10/14 are no longer mentioned.
Would appreciate it if Lurleen or someone else would confirm that the ad has been changed since this item was first posted.
Actually It looks and sounds the same. I don’t believe it was changed
I can only find one version of the ad anywhere.
I only posted itI was not involved in making the ad. To my mind the important thing is that the ad is looking and sounding good right now and going forward.
looks and sounds similar, but is not the sameWhy would anyone keep an older version of the ad online with a flawed script like the one I quoted?
I first played the ad a few minutes after it was posted. My job and interests include writing and messaging, and what I heard shocked me. I played the ad again, thinking ‘I can’t have heard that right.’ I listened carefully and transcribed word-for-word as I was listening. What I heard the first time was indeed accurate, and it was clear that no, I was not crazy. And so I posted my “Yikes” comment.
The first announcer had a warmer tone and sounded a bit younger. Reminded me very much of the “We’re Beatrice” food conglomerate ads years ago and had that same expansive quality. The new speaker sounds slightly older and has a higher, thinner tone.
so then it was changed?
If the originally posted ad was changed, someone should cop to it. I am queer and I post here in good faith. How would other Blenders feel if they offered a critique, the object of the critique was changed, but no one owned up, and then those who read posts afterwards decided you were nuts and can’t hear correctly and started criticizing you? Kinda sabotages that whole trust/ community building thing. Also a huge personal trigger for me, coming from an abusive “home” where my perceptions of reality were regularly denied. I am quite capable of making a complete ass of myself – I sure don’t need anyone’s help. This is not one of those times.
I don’t know if it was changed.I didn’t notice what you noticed. I’m not sure that matters – this is why I’m saying I’m just glad it is what it is. This post is about One Kalamazoo, not who heard what or copped out.
