The out former U.S. Marine, Tim Smith, who appeared on a billboard in Memphis, TN has come forward to speak about the vandalism that destroyed the sign, which said, “I’m gay and I protected your freedom.” (The Advocate):
The serviceman, who was kicked out of the military under its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, says he was shocked when he received news about the vandalism. “It was more or less shock and then it turned to righteous indignation and anger towards whoever had done it and that the act had even been committed,” Smith told WPTY-TV.

Destruction of the billboard is one more result of tolerating DADT
BRAVO to Smith! Particularly, for showing his courage, literally, in the South. I sent a donation to the Center to help replace the billboard and asked them to pass along an invitation to be a guest of honor at the DADT protest and Leonard Matlovich Memorial in DC the day before the National Equality March. Anyone else in DC that weekend is also invited to join Frank Kameny and Troy Perry and Dan Choi & Anthony Woods and Eric Alva and Blend contributor Tanya Domi in gathering to publicly say it’s waaay past time we starting kicking some Administration & Congressional ass again as they continue to refuse to stop DADT discharges, which ties with marriage inequality as national neon signs that gays aren’t good enough.

As of yesterday there were 176 co-sponsors of HR 1283. We need 218. But I think it is time to start setting our sites on the Senate. Yesterday an article in the Penatagon’s ‘Joint Force Quarterly’ once again concluded ‘there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that unit cohesion will be negatively affected if homosexuals serve openly.’
We have to keep the pressure up!!!
