Floating on a lurid sea of male symbols pornographically piercing female symbols is a picture of the Nelson family of Ozzie and Harriet fame. This is a new leaflet from the opponents of domestic partnerships in Washington state. The page title reads “There is something very good in this picture”, with arrows drawn to “Dad” and “Mom”. The following is written on the bottom of the last page of the leaflet
On the cover is a photo of the most traditional American Families [sic] from the 1950′s television series, Ozzie & Harriet. David and Ricky Nelson really had it pretty good. They had a normal mother and father and grandparents. We simply want this for tomorrow’s children and families.
Indeed they made a beautiful family, and for all I know were blissful together. But that didn’t result in sons David and Ricky Nelson growing up to be good fathers or husbands.
Ricky‘s wife Kristin gave birth 6 months after their wedding. After making 3 more children, they divorced.
David had two kids with his first wife, divorced and then remarried.
The leaflet authors would label such people fornicators, adulterers and home-wreckers. Much like several of the leaflet authors themselves. Rep. Matt Shea is divorced, campaign manager Larry Stickney has divorced twice and married three times, and I have it on good authority that campaign attorney and strategist Stephen Pidgeon is on his fourth marriage, leaving children dotted across several states. Did the many children these men produced have the benefit of their biological father at home?
The Nelson family picture and the men politicizing it are proof that being raised by your biological parents guarantees nothing. It is a red herring. But one thing is guaranteed if we fail to Approve Referendum 71: heterosexual seniors may not be able to care for one another in times of crisis, and the children of same-sex parents will be financially disadvantaged and legally vulnerable. Protecting ALL Washington families is the Washingtonian way.
How appropriate that they placed a “close window” symbol on that page. The leaflet should be composted. The other 3 leaflet panels are just as ripe for rebuttal. They’re pasted below the fold. Have at ‘em.

Here’s Harriet — Singing a Paen to Cary Grant’s Boyfriend
Golly Gee Whillikers, Paw!These people need to get over their “Ozzie & Harriet”/”Beaver Cleaver” fantasies – those days are over, and they’re not coming back.
These people must suffer from selective memory issues, because even back then, families weren’t like Ozzie & Harriet. It didn’t happen in real life, it happened on TV.
The only thing their families had in common with Ozzie & Harriet is film was in black & white.
Then there is the far more glaring untruth on the flyerSB-5688, which the sponsors of Referendum 71 are trying desperately to overturn, has nothing whatsoever to do with marriage.
We Are Losing The Design WarMan oh man, we are losing the design war. Who did they get to design the Approve Ref. 71 palm card? A Microsoft Word template wizard?!
Just looking at it makes me want to Reject Ref 71 purely on the basis of better design.
Our message has to be emotional and visually compelling. The message of the Reject Ref. 71 card may be cheap, but it’s far more effective because I can hang the message on a central idea (family).
Gays are supposed to be some of the most stylish, design-savvy folks on the planet, so why are we putting out bland crap like that in today’s battleground?
I disagreeThe PMW leaflet looks like the unhinged screed it is. Our palm card is actually comprehensible.
and by the waywelcome to Pam’s House Blend!
Those social science studiesOf course they will never tell you that those social science studies that talk about homes with two parents never even looked at same sex households.
It’s amazing the deceptions these folks will stoop to.
Hey thanks, LurleenI’m a long time reader and have learned quite a bit from this wonderful place. I am happy to finally join in the conversations and do my part offline!
cool!
Another thingis that those studies only say that the optimal environment for kids is with their two biological parents. They don’t look at kids raised by adoptive parents, single parents, step-parents or same-sex parents. But other studies have consistently shown that same-sex parents are just as capable of raising kids as opposite-sex parents.
Not only are the depths of the deception they’ll use amazing, but so are the mainstream media in their utter failure to do actual reporting on the matter and really look at the facts.

Did they get permisssion from Ozzie andHarriet’s copyright holders to use that image? The Rethugs have a tradition of playing fast and loose with iother peoples intellectual property, just look at the McCain campaign’s appropriation of Jackson Browne and others for their rallys. (Admittedly, very few Americans know the words to der Horst Wessel Lied…)

Commandment #8 is in heavy rotation with that bunch.

I’m sure the Nelson estate still has the rightsSomeone should tip off the LA Times on this. There’s a lovely “cease and desist” in this somewhere. Expropriation of images, intellectual property, unpaid royalty, etc.
Intellectual-property lawyers can be SO expensive.
I wonder……if the hate groups behind this filth ever bothered to get permission from the Nelson estate to use those images. Given the past history of theft of intellectual property by the right wing, I’d guess that they haven’t.
Das……Horst Wessel Lied. It’s der Gesang.
Sorry for the pedentry!
Danke.
Something similar…The local Christian evangelical group at Bowling Green State Univ here in Ohio a couple years back made a poster using Speed Racer, and there was no copyright, no disclaimer, so I promptly took it down, folded it up and set it off to the US distributor of the cartoon with a note and how to contact them.
The rest of the posters came down pretty fast a couple weeks later!
