Here’s the first volunteer-produced video supporting the Approve Referendum 71 campaign in Washington state. It gets right to the heart of the matter: voter turnout. Let’s make it go viral!
Register to vote online here. If you’re already registered to vote in WA, go here to check that your address is up to date. This is important because all ballots will be mailed to voters this election, except for Pierce Co.
Referendum 71 asks voters to approve or reject the domestic partnership law. Vote APPROVED on Ref. 71!

thanks!i just added voter registration links too. we really need all allies to vote to approve r-71, but especially the younger crowd needs to get mobilized. i heard that the average age of voter in our recent primary was 57 years old. hey you whippersnappers, are you gonna let old farts like me make the important decisions for you this election? NO!
if you’re not registered, get yourself registered or your registration address updated. then, like the flight attendant tells you with the oxygen mask, after you’ve secured your own registration, assist your friends with theirs.
Warning: Armchair Quarterbacking to followI liked that the ad was informative. And I liked using the theme colors to keep the branding and associations going. And we need to put the words vote for ref 71 in front of people as many times as we can. So over all I’m glad to see this ad, and think we need more like it.
That said, I don’t mean for this following comment to be discouraging, rather to be constructive criticism for future ads, & bear in mind I don’t have much training in marketing so take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt.
But if I were doing the wording I would have changed it slightly to say something like “with such a low turnout, even a few votes make a huge difference”, but with the wording as it is it came across a little like “the odds are stacked heavily against us, so we really need help.” I feel like the wording wouldn’t have to be changed much at all to convey a motivating message of “it’s going to be close, you can make the difference” rather than a potentially less motivating “the conditions are poor, please please help”
thanks for the fair warning
i think you make a fair point. for me the combo of WE. NEED. YOU. and the cheering and upbeat change in the sound track produced a motivational effect so i actually didn’t see what you did until you pointed it out. this is a good example of how two people can interpret the same thing differently, and a big reason why i contend that there is no one right way to make ads. different sorts of ads work for different people.
this video was made by a volunteer, so it doesn’t necessarily reflect what the campaign itself will produce.
