New Jersey Governor John Corzine is up for reelection in November. That didn’t make him shy of saying in a Q & A session
“I look forward to signing marriage equality legislation,” Corzine told the Press of Atlantic City. “I think that will be this year.”
The Governor made the remarks Monday at a union conference in Atlantic City, NJ. The national push for equality is mounting…

Go JERZ!!!!!!Atlantic city weddings, you know the Casinos will push for this!!!!!
I feel strange hoping for Corzine to be re-electedHe’s a former Goldman Sachs executive, and so I consider him a part of the entrenched corporate-money Democrats who typically serve those who fund their campaigns more than those who voted for them (see: federal democrats).
However, Chris Christie is an all-round sleaze, and I know Gov. Corzine will sign marriage equality legislation.
I hope the Gov.’s approval numbers and poll numbers rebound enough for him to edge Christie out. The last thing we need is Republicans crowing about a gubernatorial victory in a quirky, but essentially overall blue, state.
And here’s some MORE GOOD NEWS!Corzine just took the lead in the latest Monmouth poll!
This is the first poll showing Corzine with any sort of lead, but it’s still tiny and we still have our work cut out for us. We absolutely must make sure he wins so that New Jersey LGBT families can finally have full equality!
oof, a dead heat.who are the 20% that didn’t select either Corzine or the republican?
Probably folks sick of both of them…From what I’ve heard from friends in Jersey, the campaign is getting quite nasty there. But then again, they’re pretty used to negative campaigning there. I know Corzine has had trouble lately over his Wall Street background (bailout fatigue among voters) and the state budget mess, but now Christie’s finally in the hot seat over his own genuine corruption issues (especially his role in the Bush Administration’s US Attorney scandal).
It’s a mess all around, but the Democratic Party in NJ is strong and I hope they can turn out enough voters to put Corzine over the top on Election Day. Again, he’s our only ticket to marriage equality up there.
“September Surge”By way of Blue Jersey, here are a few videos from the Corzine/Weinberg campaign’s September Surge.
Thank you volunteers (and don’t forget you can vote absentee!):

That’s a significant change.I hope to see other reputable polls with the same shift to confirm a trend. That would be excellent.
If Christie’s favorables continue to tank due to his ugly hidden issues, lack of honesty, and wayward running mate, then that other 19% should break for Corzine in a state like New Jersey. That would be excellent news.
New Jersey voters, when polled, tend to dislike everyone, and beat up their Democratic incumbents, then vote to re-elect them. I’m hoping on New Jersey to stay true to form in this manner come November.
Thanks, Lurleenfor good news from Jersey that made me hopeful. I just moved from there.
Come on, come on, come on…I want to see it happen in one of my grandparents’ home states.
A few points…1) There is a third party candidate on the ballot that accounts for some of the missing 19%.
2) New Jerseyans absolutely hate their politicians, and with just cause in almost all cases. A great many of them are mob owned and/or operated machine politicians with their hands in every cookie jar in sight. However, by New Jersey standards, Corzine is relatively clean because he only recently became a politician (ran for Senate after leaving Goldman Sachs and basically bought the seat by massively outspending his opponent and then left Senate early to run for Governor).
3) The polls will continue to have a very high undecided amount right up to election day. That is normal in New Jersey. Come election day however, recent history has shown that those disaffected “undecideds” will break the Democrats way. Happened when Lautenberg ran for the Senate last time. Happened with Menendez (who was running against the “junior” son, i.e. same name, of a very prominent and generally well liked former governor) and it happened with Corzine when he was initially elected to the governor’s chair. I don’t remember Corzine ever polling above 50% in that race, but won it 54% to 46%
Promises….I’d be surprised if Corzine approves gay marriage. Last year, he said he would approve gay marrage if Obama won the presidency and he’s done nothing thus far.
campaigning on marriage equality is nothing?it’s huge! i don’t know how much he has or hasn’t worked for a bill behind the scenes, but i doubt he’d campaign on it if he wasn’t actually behind it. it’s not like most politicians see “i’m for marriage equality” as a throw-away line like “i’ll fix the potholes!”. and remember, he can’t sign a bill unless one lands on his desk. you can’t expect him to sign what he doesn’t have.
