Through an odd set of circumstancesI ended up as a card carrying man of the cloth. Seems a friend of ours was doing his studies to become a minister and we found out you could just make a relatively small cash donation and get your certification.
That said, Anderson needs to lighten the hell up. He is applying a double standard, first saying that GLBT people should be put to death, which btw the Bible does mention, but then he says the executioner shouldn’t be put to death.
In modern society that is just screwed up.
I do wish the media would stop giving Anderson all this attention.  

There is a need to expose each and everyone  of these religious nut cases.  It needs to be done for our protection.  There are more of these koo-koo-clocks out there then you might not know about.  These are the religious right.  They need to be linked to the top dollar earners of hate and those who follow the words of these people.
 Remember one thing, they truly believe they are doing god’s work each and everytime they murder someone, and the next one they kill could be you.  These are the walking living proof that hate crimes legislation needs to be passed and passed ASAP.

I had a friend with terminal cancer and at first he started going to different churches and con artists looking for a cure. He quickly learned there was a formula that many of these people used and he spent his final months digging deep into what they do. He wanted to write a book, but didn’t live long enough.
I used to go to drive him to meetings and often witnessed the same con job designed to get sick people to part with their money.
In addition to this hate speech, I would not be surprised to learn that Anderson has a faith healing scam going on. He certainly lacks morals. So, cheating the sick is probably part of his “church” too.

You might want to re-read the bible…..it is CHOCK FULL of passages “wishing ill upon others.”  In fact not only wishing, but DOING. It CLEARLY states that homosexuals (among others like adulterers and children who sass their folks) should be put to death.  Anderson is merely advocating for his belief that the the bible is the inerrant word of god. You cannot say that you are believing in Jesus when you oppose his teachings. And he is the anti-evangelical (no strict interpretation of Old Testament laws).
As far as I know the Jewish religion (in general) also doesn’t advocate for a simplistic literal interpretation. I believe they recognize that their religious texts were written by human beings and so the actual “Truth” may be hidden.

You are right…he must cherry pick…It is virtually impossible to be a modern christian and not do that. So I guess he IS the same as “moderate” christians–he just cherry picks different passages.  And bigotry is not difficult to justify using the bible–so easy in fact, that to many like Anderson it is not extreme at all.  Just living his life following the word of god as he understands it.
What it all boils down to I guess is that christians who are aghast at Anderson are basically saying their unprovable beliefs are superior to his unprovable beliefs.
It is an argument that basically goes nowhere. It is the problem with injecting belief into a rational discussion.

Just can’t go there now…I just don’t have the energy / emotional reserves these days to expose myself to that kind of poison — even if it’s in the context of an epic smackdown.
It honestly makes my soul hurt to hear of people who are so completely misguided.

I hear youThe nice Christians don’t do anything but say, “We don’t believe in that.  ”God is love.”  They don’t seem to have the balls to delete those words in their “holy books” which are dangerous.  Charismatic leaders come on the scene and use that crap as the “word of God” to gain personal power.  We shouldn’t marginalize the Khristian Kooks, “Oh that’s just silly Phelps”.  The Town Hall meetings are proof that they are growing.  The man in PA telling a Senator that he will stand before God.

Kimball devoted entire chapters to demonizing women and gays in his book “The Miracle of Forgiveness.” The only reason he “received revelation” to fully admit POC to the clergy was the threat of several lawsuits by black Boy Scouts associated with the LDS “church.” Catholic leadership agrees with him. They shelter pedophiles and are run by an old-school honest-to-god Nazi. Evangelical leadership agrees with him. And their sick, twisted, racist, bigoted followers agree with him.
That’s why the “fringe” still exists. If the “mainstream” really disagreed with what they were saying, they’d shame them out of business. Instead, they give silent assent for that kind of shit to continue, and they secretly wallow in it while maintaining a facade of “Oh, we’re not LIKE THAT!”

It’s not my way.I’m a lapsed Catholic: I don’t believe. But I think anybody who can read could see that their interpretation is incoherent for Christians (*) and ignores the history of the Bible.
There may be more than one way to interpret the Bible, but there are ways that are patently false. If ‘sola scriptura’ is so important for them, they should read it in its orginal languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Koine) and recognize that some Epistles and the Revelation are ‘planted’.
(*) Of course, the Bible itself is extremely incoherent, but they say they’re Christian. So they should follow Christ’s view of the Old Testament, at least. Otherwise they are not Christian, but something else.
This guy especially is ignorant and uneducated. He takes a mistranslation and claims he knows better what it means than people who know the original text and the historic context.
So, even if you want to accept their interpretation, it must be clear that it is not equal. Don’t be fair and balanced, be honest.
And even better: Become atheist or agnostic.

The people who care about this drivel are the same people who watch Jerry Springer.

Signorile’s audience has nothing in common with the people who watch Jerry Springer. Signorile is a very credible journalist. He does not manufacture freakshow entertainment.
Unlike the guests on Jerry Springer, Anderson is real. This isn’t staged. This isn’t presented for entertainment. It is informational, investigative journalism.
Many of the people who listen to Signorile are members of the LGBT community. It is important for us to hear what we are up against.
I know that Pam considers Mike Signorile to be a friend. I think she posted this interview because she feels it is important, not so Signorile and his work can be ridiculed and discounted as a waste of airtime.

I study in a research hospital and I’ve had more than one MD tell me that if I get sick in a rural area to get to a city hospital as quickly as possible. I’m sure they’re biased though.  I do know that if a doc is a specialist (e.g., cardiologist) and also acts as a primary care physician they need, at least in NY, to keep up with multiple boards. That’s probably a good thing.

UncertainI’m torn, Pollyanna.  You make a couple of very good points.  Bullies – and this guy is a (nominally-)grown-up example – do thrive on attention, and it’s especially difficult to refute your notion that the world’s Pat Robertsons and Phyllis Schaflys will now defend themselves with “hey, at least we’re not Steven Anderson!”
But even so, I keep coming back to the thought that the fact of the existence of crackpots like Anderson is hugely newsworthy to us as LGBTQ people.
