This is outlandish. Harry Jackson, the loudmouth carpetbagging preacher from Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland is filing to collect signatures to put marriage equality on the ballot in DC. In order to raise the profile of his anti-gay efforrt, he’s also released a video targeting voters from other states. He wants them to pressure Congress to act and review the DC City Council’s vote to recognize marriage equality.
”Let me share with you, one of the unique dynamics of DC that makes your prayer, your involvement, your writing your Congressman so very important: Currently, every law that is passed in DC has got to be approved by the Congress. In other words, DC does not really have ‘home rule.’ Once they pass a law, that law has 30 days in which Congress, in its legislative sessions can decide that the city should not take the measure that they have taken. So, right now, we have the opportunity to block same-sex marriage reciprocity. We have an opportunity to block the rise of an overt same-sex marriage law by having your Congressman say, ‘Not on my watch.’ And tell them, the people must decide… We can turn this thing around by signatures for a referendum. And we can say yes to marriage, no to same-sex reciprocity, no to the land becoming a modern Sodom and Gomorrah, because you’ve reached out and responded to your Congressman…. What happens in DC, doesn’t stay in DC.”
This man is infesting DC with his bigotry and it’s clear what he is going to do — he is going to pit the black community against the largely white out LGBT community there, framing it as all the “privileged white gays” working to deny black voters the right to vote on an issue — that’s a powerful, sick message to cultivate. And he will do it. And there will be precious few out POC stepping up to refute his charges.

Man, I want to go ghetto on this MFAnd you know what, these chickenshit black fags in DC are some of the sorriest SOB’s for not standing up to him to him.
OMG!!!When will this man be investigated and thrown in jail for committing fraud? He is not a DC resident.
See, now THIS is racism
and it’s homophobia. Jackson is attempting to exercise power against the only white folks that he can.
Please send in your IRS Forms 3949a Todayto have this man’s “Church” investigated for involving themselves in lobbying. They will have their tax exempt status revoked if in the course of the investigation they have used their parishioner’s $$ for lobbying.
Bishop Harry Jackson IS an Intolerant SodomiteListening to the man’s honey-coated tongue speaking Lies as Truth, I realized that with just a few small word-substitutions he could just as easily have been preaching against Miscegenation, or the Married Women’s Property Acts. Change the color of his skin, and he could just as well have been preaching the biblical teachings calling for the Enslavement of the Children of Ham.
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is not a story about homosexuality, it is about the evil of intolerance. with the intolerant lies coming from his mouth, Harry Jackson openly epitomizes the vile nature of the Men of Sodom, and he wears a clerical collar while he does it – he may as well wear an outfit made out of a sheet.
He speaks of Salt and Light, but he brings only Poison and Darkness. Sadly, the hardness in his heart may not be likely to be softened. I pray that he will one day reject his Satan and repent his Sin.
What an “Uncle Tom”…You know all the lily white Peter LaBarbera’s and Maggie Gallagher’s actually running the nationwide H8 campaign are LOVING this. Why? Yet again, they get to use this guy as a pawn to stir up racial division and try to pit “the blacks against the homos” so that all of us minority communities are fighting and the straight white rich folks can keep holding ALL OF US down.
I hope the LGBT communities of color in DC speak up ASAP and call this man what he really is.
Not only that but this
Someone asked about who was the council member in a thread 3 weeks or so ago.
http://rodonline.typepad.com/r…
THAT’S not helpfulUsing a racist slur against this hateful bigot, makes US no better.
who cares?I don’t care to be better…I just want to kick his *** a**.
No, “Uncle Tom” is right, peteyWhen he came out against Health Care Reform, you should have seen some of the things black posters at huff post said about Miss Bishop Jackson.
I mean, even I had to think better of using some of my ghetto language against this clown.
What’s with this “Largely White” nonsenseWhere’s Mike Rogers?
These phobes are all alike. I’m sure there’s a “Smoking Boy” somewhere who could read Jackson like the telephone directory.
I disagreeEVERYTIME we allow an opponent’s race to be what’s wrong with him, even if it’s only a small part of what is considered wrong about him…it leaves the impression it’s OK to argue like that.
You and other Black posters have the Right to say what your feel about this man, but I think using that term a mistake. What will you say if other Black posters use that charge against Pam?
You need to read Uncle Tom’s Cabinif you think Uncle Tom was a hatemongering bigot toady like Jackson.
I’m starting to think Harry doesn’t like me.I suggest that we stop using honorific titles with these people who are about nothing but hate and divisiveness. He’s no more a man of god than I am, and neither of us deserve to be called “bishop”. How about calling him something more realistic, like Charlatan Harry Jackson instead?
Pastors can be free agentsto have political opinions, as long as he is not preaching politics in his church. Look at Rick Warren and his ad promoting Prop 8, and how many times Falwell was on “Meet the Press” and other political media.
it depends alsoon what percentage of time and resources are dedicated to political activities. if he’s spending a significant amount of either on politicking, his non-profit status may be in trouble.
Do you really want to enter the fray of working out issue between communities like this?!?Already on the record with racist slurs and name calling in a predominately black community where those who live in the community are also likely predominately black?? We might want to get some input on how the lgbt community in Washington DC is handling this before we go ghetto or postal.
Heck we can be all up in Maggie and Brian’s face because that is a national thing. But we have yet to establish if this guy is even a player! If he is not then our attention (positive or negative) is going to make him one.
Seems like we would have learned that lesson with pastors like Alexander. Who was nobody until we made him somebody and now he is doing all the talk radio shows. before us he was a Podunk preacher in the desert with a failing church. We seriously need to work on not giving haters more power.
Petey, you’re right of course, but
you don’t want to give me license on Miss Bishop “I wanna be like Liz Taylor” Jackson this:
Check out this pic!

I have…And yes, there are differences. Still, what I was referring to was that Bishop Jackson seems to be nothing more than an enabler of the rich, white elitists who want to continue persecuting ALL of us minority communities.
Racist?Sorry if you took it that way. I’m irritated that the mostly white leaders of the homophobic bigot campaign continue to use “black leaders” and “Hispanic leaders” like this guy to drive wedges, paint us as “racists”, and cause a world of pain to LGBT people of color. That’s what I find deplorable.
Hold onI understand why petey said what he said…
can’t anybody do to you what you don’t allow. I don’t have a problem calling Miss Bishop Jackson a racist…
And as for the black gay community that, thus far, has refused to stand up to him…well, you see what words I’ve said that applies to the majority of the black gay community in DC.
Please go to Southern Poverty Law Center…and report him and his klan as a hate group.

Well, he sure seems to approve of DC not having home rule.So he approves of plantation politics? Ergo…..
So if not a Bishop, maybe a (c)Rook or a Queen?More like somebody’s Pawn.
I understand the…. BUTWhen I have been angry enough at what I considered gay-traitors I’ve used KAPOS or Auntie Tom.
I.R.S. is swamped these dayswith complaints, and teabaggers not filing taxes. Protesting DOMA for 5 years and not filing, I get a bunch of polite form letters, but so far no criminal charges. Could be my age though. I am only one year younger than Teddy Kennedy.
I am beginning to see exactly why there were…Black Muslims!… too bad that won't help us.
You got it!And I’m no fan of the Black Muslims either…
He at least changed his voting address to DC in April, I understand.
I do agree with you on Jackson. Her certainly is trying to pit blacks (who are all straight or obediently closeted, in his world) against white gays. But I just don’t like to see anyone introducing racialized terms that may fan flames in the wrong direction is all. It annoys me to no end that the current-day meaning of “an Uncle Tom” is the one deliberately created by minstrel shows that bastardized the original story and character. When you use the term “Uncle Tom” in the way you did above, just know that you are perpetuating the bastardized usage that the racists prepared for you. It’s not too different than using the term “that’s so gay”.
oh he’s a player alright.all you need to do is go and read newspaper articles about anything gay-related in the DC area for years back.
and i have news for you – everything is national when it comes to lgbt rights. just ask maggie and brian, wou you mentioned. you know, money-takers for the NATIONAL organizations for marriage. then there’s the international hate machine known as the roman catholic church. they have their fingers in every town and hamlet in this nation, and promote anti-lgbt hate constantly. need i go on?
Gay POCs in DCThe out LGBT community is DC is probably mostly white. And yet, according to my friends who go to Black Gay Pride every year, Washington is fairly well-known for having one of the largest Black, Gay, and Out communities in the country.
The two women who were kicked out of the Tastee Diner in Silver Spring (a DC suburb) a few weeks back were both African-American, and the ensuing protest was populated by a large number of black lesbians, including six really good friends of mine.
So if a coalition of gay POCs are needed to refute Bishop Jackson – they’re here. The problem isn’t a lack of numbers; it’s that the self-proclaimed “A-Gays” of DC are largely white and haven’t cultivated relationships with the huge numbers of black, Latino/a, and Asian LGBTs in the city. And at a moment such as this, that simple truth really sucks, big time.
AmenThanx red7eric, for your comment, “The problem isn’t a lack of numbers; it’s that the self-proclaimed “A-Gays” of DC are largely white and haven’t cultivated relationships with the huge numbers of black, Latino/a, and Asian LGBTs in the city. That’s so true in every major city in America, with rare exceptions few and far between.
a way around thatis for the non-whites (and whites they wish to include) form their own organization that drops press releases, writes letters and shows up to testify in public hearings. i know that the power differential you describe exists almost everywhere, but i’m not convinced anyone is really preventing anyone else from making noise on their own. it can be hard to get the ear of the press if you’re not on the rolodex of regulars, but it isn’t impossible. i’d love to see a group band together and break through.
I’d love it, too.But it’s not as easy as just “banding together” – especially in a town like DC, where organizations such as HRC, The Task Force, GLAAD, GLSEN, and others are either headquartered or have major field offices. When people look for “the gay community,” they immediately seek out these large organizations that represent LGBTs on a national level. If such a thing as the “Gay POC of DC org” sprung up at a local level, they wouldn’t be given a platform so long as these national organizations are located just down the street.
A much quicker way around the issue would be for HRC, The Task Force, GLAAD, GLSEN, and others to develop better relationships with out LGBT POCs in the city and around the country, so that ‘phobes like the good Bishop could be answered in a way that doesn’t allow him to race-bait quite so effectively.
I bet you my salary for the yearthat if an LGBT-POC org in D.C. started email press releases flatly criticizing Jackson, and if they started showing up to his event and presented themselves as sane POC in opposition, the press would eat it up because it’s a controversy that’s hardly gotten any public airing.
Yes, absolutely the POC and the established orgs need to work together. One great way to make them year to work with you is steal their thunder.
i hope you could read that for all the typos…
