crossposted on Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters
This weekend, “our friend” and reliable anti-gay crusader Peter LaBarbera seems to be on a tear about the bisexual community. On his Americans for Truth webpage (which is the biggest oxymoron in the history of the world), LaBarbera is focusing on the recent BiSummit, which was held downtown in Chicago in conjunction with the 2009 National LGBTI Health Summit.
The purpose of the summit was to “shed light on the alarming health disparities this large segment of the GLBT community faces.”
Unfortunately, in the hands of LaBarbera, the information coming from the summit as well as the summit itself will be used to bash bisexuals and by extension, the entire lgbt community.
A perfect example is his absolutely ridiculous (I'm sorry but that's the word that comes to mind) interpretation of the following sentence:
The day began with an overview of the current research on bisexual health. Research shows that bisexual people—who make up about half of those who identify as GLB—face huge health disparities.
Now to LaBarbera, that sentence gives him license to put out this headline – Half of Homosexuals are Bisexual: Homosexual Newspaper.
It's a total inaccuracy that's only enhanced by his intentional omission of the passage that follows:
According to bisexual health researchers Cheryl Dobinson and Stewart Landers, compared to both gays, lesbians and heterosexuals, bisexuals report higher rates of alcohol and tobacco use, substance abuse, depression and anxiety, suicidal thoughts, physical and sexual abuse and self harm, among other issues.
With LaBarbera, it's not even funny anymore how he will distort information in his crusade against the lgbt community.
No doubt he will take other information from the summit and twist it to suit his purposes.
And it's sad that in the hands of a supposed Christian, information gathered to help a community will be used to hurt it.

He is money hungry. People who read his website looking for truth as they know it to be will still send cash to the Peter. The real thing is, When did hating and spreading complete lies about another group of people (Human Beings) become such a high priority christian value?
He is trying to bilk every penny out of his faithful followers to keep his “Lifestyle” alive and well.
Question? How much of a following does this nitwit have. Since I read the Blend, I know quite a bit about my friendly neighborhood homophobe. But how much of an influence in, say, evangelical circles does he have?
Not much!I was surprised that Alan Colmes pretty much called Peter a gay pornographer on his show, which is exactly what he is (back when it was ‘Hannity & Colmes’).
He can’t have too much of a following: other closeted men anxiously awaiting for when Peter posts his self-made porno, as if there’s not tons of free gay porn out there already.
Weirdos.
good questioni know that he and his massachusetts counterpart, brian camenker of mass resistance, share “information” and scare text. or at least they have in the past. so they promote/prop up each other and perhaps then benefit to a degree from each others donor pool.
funny thing is though that camenker was seen as so totally whacked that the “mainstream” hater group, massachusetts family institute (then called vote on marriage .org) tossed him out of the big tent during the later constitutional amendment debates. his greatest personal impact was on legislative races, where he greatly helped pro-equality candidates by sending out promo mailers “on behalf of” conservative candidates. the mailers were so virulently anti-gay that people felt there was most of a pathology rather than a political view behind them, and bolted away from the candidates they were supposed to help, lol!
But He Is, Blanche – He Is Retarded! When a person obsesses over homosexuality so much, when they have a wife and 5 kids at home – that is some form of mental retardation.
It’s like a friend of mine with obsessive-compulsive disorder: he’s ALWAYS cleaning, always straightening things up, he just can’t sit still.
Peter is the same way, except he’s got to be talking about homosex. I’ll bet he can’t have a conversation with a person for 2 minutes without bringing up homosex.
editedI think Alvin isn’t online at the moment, or he would have responded. In the interim, I’ve edited the language.
your comment is just so gay!i think people might agree with you if you claimed that labarbara seems to have deep emotional problems. however, this is not the same thing as “mental retardation”.
I am sorryI have just gotten online and I take full responsiblity for what I said. It was totally inappropriate and I apologize for it.
Thank you Lurleen for correcting it.
That too!Emotional problems is more like it! LOL
I couldn’t imagine myself hating something so much that I’d talk about it and obsess about it all the time.
Kate Smith scares me. I rarely talk about her, and only in reference to her 1970′s TV special with The Supremes and others.
I hate hominy and would rather staple my lips shut than eat that stuff! I certainly wouldn’t make a special trip to Kroger to buy hominy just to open the can and remind myself how much the smell and taste disgusts me.
There’s no reason anyone should torture themselves with stuff they dislike – but Peter is into the whole bondage/S&M thing, which includes torture.
PS I LOVE Bette Davis! ;)
Sorry that Health Summit GAVE porno pete a gift with that BULLSH*TIt should read half LGB’s are “bisexual”… wink wink
First off, there are no hard numbers of the total LGBs in the country, and the numbers of bisexuals are even LESS KNOWN. So any number they use of LGBs and Bis, is just yanked out of someone’s a$$. Notice they excluded transgender people from our community,in the statistic too.

sorry for duplicate post, i think maybe my wireless mouse is too touchy
I also have to wonderHow many bisexual people actually identify as gay or lesbian? Biologically, I’m bisexual – I run about a 3.5 – 4 on the Kinsey scale – but because I’ve been so emotionally and socially turned off by men it is HIGHLY unlikely I’ll eve be in a relationship with one ever again. And I’m in a committed long-term monogamous relationship with another woman. So I identify as a lesbian even though my sexual orientation as its most basic is bi.
I wondered about thatI was under the impression that we (B’s) were actually among the minority. I have met very few B’s but oodles of L’s and G’s. Hell, I’ve met more T’s than I have B’s (and isn’t that about the oddest sentence ever written?) I have come across quite a bit of anger directed at B’s, however, especially the idea that B’s aren’t ‘real’ queers unless we are in a relationship with the same gender and then we are L’s and G’s, not B’s, which might have something to do with the reluctance of B’s to stand up and be counted. (Or I could simply be looking in the wrong places for my fellow B’s.)
“It’s like a friend of mine with obsessive-compulsive disorder…”As someone who has OCD, I can’t even begin to express my outrage at being compared to Peter LaBarbera.
Peter is the same way…
No, Peter IS NOT the same as a person with OCD.
People with OCD are not delusional. We suffer from obessions and compusive behaviors that we are completely aware of as being irrational.
That is the horror of OCD. Your brain gets locked into a pattern of thinking and you still know what is real and what is not. Your friend knows that the room is clean and his brain keeps telling him to keep cleaning.
I assure you that my OCD does not make me “retarded” — like many people with OCD, I have a high IQ and no difficulty functioning on an intellectual level.
Peter LaBarbera’s behavior is not the result of OCD. He may have a mental illness, but it is something that results in paranoia and delusions. People with OCD do not hurt other people, our obsessions are usually not related to abstract concepts and longterm outcomes.
If you want to be a better friend to your friend with OCD, please educate yourself on the condition.

If we count Republican Gays as Bisexual…it still wouldn’t be more than 10% of the total LGBTs
I would be skeptical of any claims of an accurate countGiven the negative stereotypes associated with bisexuality in both the straight and lesiban and gay communities (i.e. that crap about bisexual people being players who will take anything with a pulse and the other one about bisexual folks being homosexuals who just can’t accept who they are) I would scrutinize the survey methodology behind any claimed figure very carefully before giving any credence to it.
Me, tooTechnically, I’m bisexual. I’ve had relationships with both men and women.
I doubt that I’ll be in a relationship with a woman again. I’m not turned off by them socially. I just don’t have too many single straight women in my social circle these days. I have had some bad reactions from gay friends in the past. They have difficulty dealing with the fact that I’m attracted to women. (Yuck! That’s gross, etc.) The worst is being treated as suspicious or a closet case.
So, I have identified as gay rather than bisexual for many years. It is simply easier. I wouldn’t tell a man I’m dating that I’m really bi until it got very serious.
If you want to be really technicalanyone between 0 and 6 on the Kinsey scale can be considered bisexual. Which means almost the entire human race.
I’ve been sexual with women in High School and collegeBut that was prior to my self actualizing as gay. since then I never considered another woman as a sexual partner.
I am gay, and acting as if there aren’t social pay-offs to appear straight is a lie. I don’t doubt the possibility of bisexuals, but of the three men in my life who defined themselves as bi, NONE were.
“I don’t doubt the possibility of bisexuals…”That’s like a straight person saying that he doesn’t doubt the “possibility” of homosexuality being a legitimate sexual orientation.
You aren’t the one who gets to judge whether or not being bisexual is possible or not. Bisexuals certainly don’t need your validation in order to exist.
I assure you that there are bisexuals in this world. It isn’t an act or some sort of denial of being gay. The implication that it is can be viewed as insulting and seems very narrow-minded.
Bisexuality is a fact. Get used to it.
Does anyone know anything about the source of that claim?Does anybody actually know where that 50% number came from?
