My son was born in June of 1961 in a hospital in CA, and the nurses released us because of miscommunication in a day and a half before the circumcision was done. We had to go back to the doctor’s office to have it done a week later, and the doctor was NOT HAPPY. My second son was born in the same hospital 4 years later. Female circumcision is seen as genital mutilationwhy is it not the same for males? I’ve seen some real circumcision hatchet jobs that look like real genital mutilation. Circumcision should not be a “routine” hospital procedure performed on newborns. The decision to be circumcised should be left up to the child when they are old enough to make the choice, not the parents, doctors or hospital staff.

100% agreed.My uncle was circumcised on the kitchen table when he was 10 because somebody convinced his parents that it would improve hygiene. Can you imagine? He told us this when he was in his late 70s. It clearly was a decision made for him that he never forgave.

Growing up CatholicThe Catholic church used to have a feast day called the Feast of the Circumcision (I think they now call it the “octave of Christmas”). It was supposed to commemorate the hacking off of part of Jesus’ you-know-what, and it was a “holy day of obligation”–a day when you had to go to Mass or be condemned to hell forever. We were always puzzled by it. No one in our Catholic grade school–no priest, no nun–was willing to explain to us just what we were celebrating on that day, or why.
The dictionary was no help. Foreskin? What’s that? Check another definition. A flap of skin on the end of the…? WTF? It was years before I finally figured it out–empirically, if you get my drift.
I can’t wait to hear what Holy Mother Church thinks of this latest idiocy.

It’s usually not as traumatic.FGM often involves excision of the clitoris, which is far more traumatic (and damaging in terms of sexual enjoyment) than removal of the foreskin. Even cutting or removal of the clitoral hood (which is normally not what people are referring to when talking about FGM) may not be directly comparable.
(Not that I’m a fan of circumcision — complications from my own circumcision may not have affected function more than usual for the process, but I’ve been left with a convoluted and practically non-Euclidean skin geometry which is almost impossible to keep clean. So much for easier hygiene.)

Circumcision seems to be far more prevalent in white U.S. born males than it is among other groups in the U.S. (except of course for Jewish men mentioned above). It also seems to be more prevalent in the Midwest and Northeast, than in the South and Western parts of the country.
It is quite the exception in Europe and Latin America.
Again, no scientific studies to quote, but just what my eyes have shown me.

They’re really not the same thing.“Female circumcision” is often a code word for clitorectomy, which has far more devastating effects on a person’s sexuality than circumcision.
Having said that, however, I’d like to go on record that I am completely against circumcision and genital mutilation in any form. It’s bizarre, barbaric, wildly unnecessary and a violation of the child’s human rights.

Not necessarilyBoth my grandfathers – born 1900 & 1907 were circumsized (as were all my uncles). Both were born at home, delivered by midwives.
I was shocked to find out that circumcision was done around age 5. In one case, at the same time a tonsillectomy was performed.
Apparently, in the early 1900′s no one worried much about how much pain they caused. The uncles were all born in hospitals in the 1930′s. I was born in 1960 and it was pretty much universal. But then this was the Midwest.

Unfortunately, in my mother’s generationI think that they were told it was a hygiene issue. Yeah, the issue was that mother’s did not want to deal with little boys penises and teach them how to keep themselves clean. American females of my mother’s generation did not want to deal with it.

Oh, oh! AND, as so many of these clitoridectomies/FGMs take place, let’s say, in less than sanitary conditions the knives used are dirty, sometimes even dull… Many of the “patients” suffer from infections following the procedure and quite a few die from the infection and/or the pain.
I have heard of some women retaining enough nerve endings to still experience sexual enjoyment, since the clitoral system is very intricate. But it’s still hit or miss and when this is done, it’s not to make sure the woman has sexual enjoyment later. That’s considered completely unnecessary in that worldview.

It was the idea that some boys somewhere hadn’t been cut. Would I see them in college, funny skin sleeves covering their dick heads? What if I liked some guy and then found out he still had his foreskin? Eeewww! [grin]
