Lately I’ve been starting the morning off by reading the latest edition of Gary Randall’s My Daily Denial (his blog posts). Gary Randall is a key architect of Referendum 71, which asks voters to reject or approve Washington’s domestic partnership law.
Today’s issue featured an exceptional display of multi-layered denial on Gary’s Part. He is in denial about what domestic partnerships are (by definition, “not marriage“). He is in denial about how a hefty majority of the legislature and the governor have reasoned that fairness is good for Washingtonians, and the vast majority of Washingtonians agree. And he is in denial that it was only via Protect Marriage Washington’s lies and deceit and the contra-legal policies of the Secretary of State that his illegitimate referendum qualified for the ballot, if only just barely at that.
As I was reading it dawned on me that Gary has created this elaborate mental and fundraising mechanism not to fend off some gargantuan mortal enemy, but to persecute a mere 5,906 pairs of domestic partners, or 11,812 people. In a state of about 6,668,200 people, that’s only 0.18% of the population.
Gary Randall is fixated on actively persecuting 0.18% of the population, the tiniest of minorities. Estimates are that this campaign will cost both sides in the millions of dollars. All to keep 0.18% of the population from being able to use sick leave to care for a seriously ill partner. All to keep 0.18% of the population from providing a partner with a pension they’ve already paid for should one die. All to keep 0.18% of the population from being notified if their partner is the victim of a crime. All to keep 0.18% of the population from providing death benefits to a partner if they are a police officer or firefighter killed in the line of duty.
How sad that Gary Randall is spending his retirement beating up the puny kid next door. And spending other people’s money to do it.

From info we got in the mail yesterdayfrom SFMM, they are fighting 3400 couples here in Maine. (yes, I’ll be posting more on THAT later!)
I have no idea if that figure is accurate- but it’s an awful lot of money and effort to discriminate against a reverse a law that creates equality here.
Speaking of spendingHas either FnF PAC or PMW told the PDC how much they paid, or how much was paid on their behalf, for paid signature gatherers? Seems like they have a very casual attitude towards compliance with laws they don’t like.
You are asking entirely the wrong questionThe right question:
How much would you get in donations from fanatical bigots if you look like you want to persecute 0.18% of the population?
We all know this has nothing to do with domestic partnerships and everything to do with fleecing the flock.
I’d like to whore a blog post about thisMay I please, blog-mistress?

This is what bullies doGary Randall is a bully. And this is what bullies have always done: beat up the puny kid next door.
A digest of this posting would make a perfect script for an “Approve 71″ ad on TV and radio. It should also be turned into a letter to the editor of every Washington State newspaper.
letters to the editorAnyone wanting to use my ideas or text to promote LGBT equality is more than welcome to it.
There is an amazing letter-to-the-editor tool on Washington Families Standing Together’s Take Action page.
I was thinking the exact same thingThis would make an excellent LTE. If I didn’t live in VT I’d be sending it out now!
Actually…there is nothing wrong with you writing to a WA newspaper saying that if R-71 isn’t approved, you’ll find it difficult to travel to WA to enjoy the incredible scenery, food and people because your rights will be abridged, making the trip a personal risk.
Done!Actually we were in Seattle last month on our way to visit our son and his family in BC. Personal touches are always so nice.
great!

Why vote?
There has been some confusion about how to vote. You must vote approve to support and protect Washington families.
A note to those considering rejecting Referendum 71
If you vote against this, you are rejecting basic human rights – plain and simple. You are a bigot. “Deeply held beliefs” will not get you off the hook.
This law does not change marriage in Washington state, nor have anything to do with teaching children about anybody’s relationships.
In fact, this law strengthens families with and without children throughout our state.
APPROVE REFERENDUM 71
Thank you for this post – after all these years of amendments and referendumsand whatever other legal maneuvers these people in the anti gay rights INDUSTRY come up with, we always talk about what’s going on in this state or that commonwealth. Or we know people as individuals who are affected.
But this is probably the first time I can recall seeing how many people make up the group in a state that would be affected compared to how many millions are being spent.
I found it mind blowing – and can only imagine what the general public, who isn’t immersed in this day after day the way we all are, would think.
I hope to see more in the messaging like this – it really does give it a new perspective.
