As promised, here is the interview that I did on The Ron Reagan Show on Air America from the Netroots Nation media row on Thursday.

Fantastic Interview PamAs always, you are a clear and calm voice amid the chaos of politics.
I was really intrigued by a couple of your responses, though, because they go to the heart of an issue I was trying, without success, to bring up in the thread on the HRC report on racial issues in the LGBT world. Although I agree that, if we are going to be forced to the ballot box to defend our lives, we have to do the kind of outreach you described, it’ the equivalent of mowing weeds to get rid of them. If you don’t attack the root of the weed, it will just spring back up.
The “weed” here is homophobia and its root is a political and religious movement to demean, dehumanize and slander LGBT people. You mentioned that church-going behavior was the best predictor of how someone voted in Prop 8. Why is that? Because their ministers are lying to them and denouncing us from the pulpit. Until and unless we stop that, we will never win the real victory of equality in our society.
When Reagan asked you why LGBT people are the last group against which discrimination is OK, I have to say I think you missed the most important salient fact – there is an organized anti-gay hate movement, with its basis Anita Bryant’s work in the 1970s, that has deliberately scapegoated LGBT people in order to build a political coalition and gain both votes and dollars. And that movement has been resoundingly successful, even as the country has moved, almost inevitably, toward support for LGBT equality.
To win nationally, to avoid fights like Prop 8, we must attack that movement, and I don’t see that happening. We have to make it clear that just because your church says we are immoral, it is still not right to go the next step and say that therefore we are bad people, or a threat to society, or any of that bullsh*t.
That was why I was so frustrated by the HRC report thread. Of course we need to do the outreach, to bring more diversity to our organizations and our political movements. But while we’re busy doing that, the lies, the smears, the slander all continue. And I just don’t see anyone, in any leadership capacity within the LGBT movement really attacking those.
You Two ROCK !I had the delightful opportunity to hear your interview with Ron live as I was driving home from work! You two really provide amazing information to us. I live near Seattle and am thrilled that Mr. Reagan is based in the Pacific Northwest. Keep up the great work and have a super duper time at Netroots Nation!
This is a great interviewI really like the discussion between you and Ron re: a push for straight allies to come out and speak up for civil rights!
And completely agree that the focus for a greater understanding happens quicker with reality-based conversations – take the focus from the bedroom to the FAMILY room.
Hey, that would make a great slogan!
Seriously, this is a wonderfully friendly and delightful interview, a fantastic conversation. Thanks, Pam and Ron!
Very eloquent on issuesand you have a beautiful voice. Air America should sign you up for a radio talk show. The North Carolina experience gives
you an unique perspective from the barbed wire foxhole that California and New York talk show hosts don’t have. Really good. Congratulations.
Thanks for the audio! Both voices superb on radio.Pam, we need to get more discussion re 'turning the tables' on the rights use of their way being the only right way! That is what allies can do.Also as Louise says below, get the discussions out of the bedroom into the FAMILY room, and better yet into the churches.Remeber the KISS-IN at 2PM!
Ya done goodVery relaxed and a clear message. I really liked the government intervening into churches which want to perform same sex marriages, very clever arguement.
As always, Pam,I’m dazzled by the clarity of your thought and the eloquence with which you express it. You’re as effective a spokesperson as our community could want.
I don’t mean to sound like a nag, but I really wish you’d work on your camera-shyness and do a lot more of this.
