If the opponents of the President’s health care reform want to look like legitimate opposition and not fringe crazies like the birthers, it’s probably a good idea to closet up this faction of its “support” (Firedoglake);
Last night we had a rapid response effort after hearing reports that the Malkinites were going to swarm a health care event in Denver where Nancy Pelosi was showing up in support of Jared Polis and Diane DeGette.Mark S. took videos and uploaded them to us after the event. Notably, he spoke with on 16 year-old who had identified himself to Jeralyn as hailing from Wasilla, Alaska. Mark got a shot of his t-shirt, which had a picture of Obama and the slogan “Hitler gave good speeches, too”:
He was chanting “read the bill, read the bill.” I’m having a hard time believing that kid read the 1000 page bill.
And the FAIL isn’t relegated to teens, look at this kid’s probable role model, the untethered-from-reality-for-a-paycheck Glenn Beck, who jokes about poisoning Pelosi.

Gee…Since the kid’s from the same hometown as the moronic twit Palin and her ignorant brood, here’s betting he can’t read, period!
You can’t read when your gene poolis so shallow that your IQ is 70.
No kidding
He probably doesn’t even complete all his homework for English lit.
…they still teach that in school, right?
Love It or Leave ItThese are the same people who’d say “love it or leave it” if they were in power and met this kind of opposition to their policies. Why does it seem like the supposed party of Law & Order is the most comfortable with breaking the law and subverting the democratic process? This alternet story details the whole outrageous mess that smacks of 1930s Germany:

In the early republic, political parties had their own militias, whose members were paid to disrupt the other parties’ events and even to assault rival politicians and journalists friendly to them. John Adams used to use his party’s militias (and at times even the federal army) to shut down newspapers critical of him. (This is all detailed in the terrific American Aurora by Richard Rosenfeld, among a great many other worthwhile books.) Anyone who likes to believe the United States is more civilized now than it was in the early 1800s needs to take a good look around. And the more losses the Republican yobbos suffer, the more virulent they will get. We haven’t seen the worst of them yet, not by a long shot.
American Aurora is an excellent book. It’s living history… About the Republicans: they’ll still just a right centrist party – just ‘good ‘ol boy’, regular American political thugs and hustlers, no different than their Democrat cousins.
They’re not quite Nazis – yet.
And they’re just as likely to recover from the Bush debacle as they did from Nixon and Reagan. That’s because their only opponents are another bunch of right centrist crooks called Democrats. A big test of how soon they’ll recover will be the upcoming New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial elections.
This is not a democratic country; it’s a dual party state with closed, non-competitive elections. Americans have no choice so every few years from 40% to 60% of eligible voters can be found dragging themselves down to vote, holding their noses and some must surely just close their eyes, stab at the candidates list and hope they’ll to get lucky.
As we’ve seen, all that is changing.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the Republicans, Pam, Obama’s fake plan is DOA. And in any case it’s not worth defending. It makes no difference at all if it’s opposed by Republicans for partisan reason because its biggest backers are HMOs, insurance companies and Big Pharma. The unvarnished truth is that Obama’s had almost 30 top secret meetings with the heads of these criminally negligent companies and absolutely refuses to talk about the deals he’s making at our expense. At the same time Congressional hustlers from both parties are making their own sellout deals. Health care is a goner, again, and as a consequesce Americans will continue to get no or poor treatment and needlessly die.
It it’s not socialized medicine it’s not going to do the job – it’s just going to be another failure.
Americans desperately need single payer health care. Read what the California Nurses Association, National Nurses Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO, doctors and health care experts have to say about single payer
Teaching of English/American Lit has been *destroyed*……since the schools started putting more of those people in and displacing the superior dead-white-male canon. (Because it’s not like Toni Morrison is the most recent U.S. Nobel laureate in literature or anything…) (Sorry. Bitter progressive lit-major rant.)
the last time I checkedNO
English lit was rolled into basic English courses in most areas and than phased out except in AP courses. Many schools can barely get their students to write at a middle school or elementary school level. You should see some of the papers the current stock of Freshman write (the only parts spelled correctly are the parts that they copy and paste from Wikipedia).
Matt’s favorites: using BTW or WTF in a paper, “them people,” or suddenly switching to first person in the middle of the paper.
Anything that nudges Melvilleout of the canon is to be desired. ANYTHING. Even with the obvious homoeroticism, he has to be the dullest writer known to humankind. Ten pages to describe the candles in Ahab’s cabin?! Jesus.
They don’t teach civics any more.Or history. Or science. Why bother with writing and literature?
Rachel Maddow calls out the Fauxtestershttp://bluenc.com/maddow-art-p…
My introduction to Melvillewas reading Moby Dick in a high-school class with a teacher who considered herself a Melville fan (and expert!) and who insisted on “protecting” her hero from any suggestion of homoeroticism in his work. So yeah, she managed to extinguish the only redeeming feature of Melville — though even that wouldn’t have made up for having to wade through Melville’s attempts at a “scientific” classification of whales (as “horizontal-tailed spouting fish”, along with 50 pages of digressions about how size is clearly a more biologically significant feature in whale classification than baleen vs. teeth).
Of course they don’t –Civics and science — beyond a few token fact-memorization sessions — aren’t material for the “no child left behind” exams, and don’t really work towards the new public-education mission of producing obedient labor for the corporate sector.
Wow…I almost fell asleep just reading that description of Melville. I’m very happy I never had to read Moby Dick.
Can’t wait!I’m going to be a writing Fellow at my university starting Fall quarter. I think I have to do some tutoring as well. Oh boy. Now I’ll understand why my mom would cry herself to sleep when she tutored at the university level.
Don’t worry about the Republicans, worry about the Democrats While orchestrated squads of righter wingers are allowed free rein to disrupt meetings on Obama’s DOA health care plan something very different is happening to unionists, seniors and the victims of the insurance companies, HMO’s and pharmaceutical giants that support Obama’s sellout plan.
Donna Smith of the California Nurses Association, National Nurses Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO describes it in an article entitled Health Insurance Giants Arrest Children While Senators Arrest Seniors, Nurses, Doctors in the Webzine Common Dreams.
