Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC5) is a stain on the reputation of my state. She continues to belch out the most ignorant garbage on the floor of the House.
Yesterday she decided to weigh in on the health care reform debate with this doozy. Keyboard protection on.
Rep. Foxx: The Republican plan would “make sure we bring down the cost of health care for all Americans and that ensures affordable access for all Americans and is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government.”
WTF is she talking about?! Media Matters has to straighten out the mental confusion of Rep. Foxx (since I doubt she's able to navigate the complexities of the subject at hand to actually do anything except regurgitate winger talking points):
The Democratic Legislation Actually Provides Professional Guidance For Seniors' Difficult Decisions – NOT To Encourage Euthanasia Like other Republicans before her, Rep. Foxx is basing her statement on a clause in the House bill guaranteeing seniors free counseling to help them with complex decisions.
“Advance Care Planning Consultation” Would Provide Seniors With Professional Advice On Will Preparation, Power Of Attorney, And Other Complicated Issues. PolitiFact.com reported: “Indeed, Sec. 1233 of the bill, labeled 'Advance Care Planning Consultation' details how the bill would, for the first time, require Medicare to cover the cost of end-of-life counseling sessions. According to the bill, 'such consultation shall include the following: An explanation by the practitioner of advance care planning, including key questions and considerations, important steps, and suggested people to talk to; an explanation by the practitioner of advance directives, including living wills and durable powers of attorney, and their uses; an explanation by the practitioner of the role and responsibilities of a health care proxy.'” [PolitiFact.com, 7/16/09]
- Medicare Will Pay For Increased Counseling If The Senior Citizen Becomes Ill And Would Like Additional Information. According to PolitiFact.com: “Medicare will cover one session every five years, the legislation states. If a patient becomes very ill in the interim, Medicare will cover additional sessions.” [PolitiFact.com, 7/16/09]
- Counseling Is NOT Mandatory. In regards to the “mandatory” assertion, PolitiFact.com reported: “For his part, Keyserling said he and outside counsel read the language carefully to make sure that was not the case. 'Neither of us can come to the conclusion that it's mandatory.' he said. 'This new consultation is just like all in Medicare: it's voluntary.' 'The only thing mandatory is that Medicare will have to pay for the counseling,' said Dau.” [PolitiFact.com, 7/16/09]

You might recall that last year Foxx managed to make KO's worst person in the world for calling the hate crime of Matthew Shepard's murder a hoax:
Rep. Foxx: “The bill was named after a very unfortunate incident that happened, where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's, it's really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.”[House Floor Speech, 4/29/09]
Foxx had to go into serious damage control mode. She issued a standard non-apology after the uproar, saying it was “a poor choice of words,” and sent a note to Judy Shepard that said “if I said anything that offended her, I certainly apologize for it and know that she's hurting, and I would never do anything to add to that.”
When that went over like a lead balloon, the Congresswoman for the 5th district attempted to play the victim — she said that she was receiving death threats at her office. However, that tactic didn't exactly work out since the Capitol Police reported that no one in Foxx's office had alerted them about any threats and that there was “no ongoing investigation” of the matter.
Please — the good people of the 5th, I beg you — bounce her out in 2010.

I had never considered putting seniors to deathI loved all the elders in my family, and their friends.
BUT Virginia, you keep flapping your gums about Matthew Shepards heinous murder being a HOAX, and trust me I’ll make ONE exception to the rule.
I heard this same story with other Congress members last night. This is beyond the pale. I hope that rational voices (from either party) will shoot this down fast. It is really disgusting.
Watching CSPANis the fastest way to becoming entirely disillusioned with our government and the intellectual capacity of our elected officials. Try listening to the questions Congressmen ask the Fed when the Fed updates them on the economy. Truly scary and sad that these are the people making decisions and taking our money. I give them credit, though, because they were smart enough to realize that the only guaranteed revenue stream in the world is the taxpayers’ money……backed by the power of the military and nothing namby-pamby like consumer habits or trendiness or utility curves.
I would LOVE to see the end of Virginia Foxx’s career!Unfortunately, I think it would take a lot to defeat her. She’s very conservative (obviously), but she also represents one of the most conservative districts of the state. She’s a skilled campaigner and fundraiser, and she has repeatedly shown that she is not afraid to get dirty to win an election. It’s also worth noting that each of the three times she was elected, she has won a minimum of 57% of the vote, so she has always won by comfortable margins.
I’m not saying it’s impossible to beat her, but we would have to find a truly exceptional candidate who is not afraid to take her on, fundraise like crazy, and weather a nasty general election campaign. I think a blue dog in the mold of Heath Shuler might have a decent chance of defeating her, but do we have anyone in the 5th district like that that wants to rise to the challenge?
We really do need to defeat her, as she is proving more and more how batshit insane and out of touch with reality she is. She is truly frightening.
Also, regarding the remarks she made in reference to the hate crimes bill, didn’t she say them with Judy Shepard in the room?
yes, Judy Shepard was thereIt goes to show you that Foxx has no sense of decency despite her pious bleatings. That’s why only the worst of the wingnuts defended her. What was bad was that none of the Dem Congresspeeps from NC (that I can recall) were willing to condemn her publicly.
I’m surea lot of her constituents who voted for her don’t realize she spews this much bile.
I’m also sure some of her constituents totally believe this statement and will run with it.
Perhaps if more people monitored what their rep. was doing.. they might vote differently. Most people just vote and set it on autopilot, ignoring the woman until reelection.
I’m monitoring my rep., he pisses me off royally. I write lots of letters, but it’s like I’m getting nowhere with him. So, I tell my friends and family about the stuff, sway their vote and hope they will spread the word. If you live in this district: do that.
WowI first heard about the “putting old people to death” conspiracy theory on Rachel last night. As idiotic as it sounds they really believe this! Where do these people come from? Worse yet who taught them to believe that Democrats or anybody in America, even with our many faults, would seriously consider anything like this? Karl Rove anyone?
I used to think that politicians spoke wildly over the top just to get our attention. It never dawned on me that they were serious — I always thought it was just rhetoric. According to what I’ve been hearing from the Republican base, though, they’re taking all this seriously. This is the epitome of the politics of hate and fear. Feeding fear by the shovelful to gullible basers is despicable and dangerous. I wonder if they’re really ready to reap what they’ve sown.
The only thing that I can say about this is…
Foxx Is A Disgrace!Unfortunately, I live in the 5th District and Democrats are way outnumbered here. The Republicans here only concentrate on religion and gays. They are way out of touch and way out in left field. Please someone send us a Democrat that can beat Foxx in 2010! Hell, I would settle for a different Republican at this point. The woman is Jesse Helms reincarnated.
Just as the language is (and should be) correctly reframedregarding other forms of GOP zealotry, let’s take back the term “conservative”. There’s nothing “conservative” about being purely spiteful, dreadful, ill-mannered, bigoted, greedy, lying, and hatred-filled. Foxx is all of these things, but none of them is conservative.
She is more rightly called a “self-servative”.
If Dems and Independents of good will really care about retiring this awful personit sounds like they need to put aside talk of Rethugs and such and work to find a slightly less crazy conservative Republican to run against her in the next primary.
Invoking authority is a disinformation tacticYou are avoiding the issues by using disinformation tactics. Without knowing the full context to Representative Foxx’s comment, you imply your own authority (Media Matters) and expertise but you also fail to address the issues.

No life support could equal death.
Do you want your government deciding this, or your partner/family?
Please take some time and research for yourself.

I know
Me too. My Representative is Brad Miller. What a total waste of my time, energy and effort. He is totally useless except rubber stamping ANY new tax bill that comes before Congress. When he responds to my letters/emails/faxes/phones calls, I get the same canned response you would get if you wrote to him about the same topic.
Both sides of the aisle are guilty of this.

Yikes!Wow, I don’t know what happened there!
Well…From my understanding at least, the subject of Pam’s diary was not healthcare. It was to discuss how Rep. Foxx is an embarrassment to her district and state (and country, IMHO) and why Pam would like to see her booted out. Pam then went on to include quotes from Foxx on two different issues that show how Foxx truly is an embarrassment.
I don’t see that as an attempt at disinformation or distraction, but an elaboration of the topic presented in the subject and first paragraph of the post.
So what’s the problem?
Read againRaleighguy was talking about the apologist, RA…
Thank you for the response, Marlene……but I’m not sure that I see it the same way. I took your advice and read Pam’s OP and raleighguy’s comment again. Since his comment was a direct reply to the OP (in fact, both of his comments were), then I still read his comments as a direct critique of what Pam wrote.
I’m open to the possibility that raleighguy’s intent may not be as it appears to me, but if that’s the case, then his intent is not very clear.
Changing the subjectThe debt clock and 8th grade civics test links were copied and pasted by mistake. They are all in my list of “quick links” and I didn’t notice that they were there until reading the other comments after mine. Sorry; didn’t mean to distract you.
I stand by my comments whether Pam was talking about health care or how much Foxx sucks. Foxx’s statements were treated flippantly, when they really carry an ominous meaning. It’s all in the verbiage of my original post; Congress will decide how much/what kind/how often you get whatever care it is you need at end of life. You will not have the choice any more.
And “health care” is not the problem – America has the best “heath care” system in the world. No one, even illegal aliens, are turned away for treatment.
The problem is health insurance. Government regulations, health insurance regulations, HMO’s, insurance companies (now government owned) and powerful medical industrial complex lobbyists are the problem and the reason why some folks don’t have “health insurance”.
Government is the problem, not the solution.
