Not too long ago I blogged about the actor on The Young and the Restless, Chris Engel, who walked off of the set when he was told his character was going to have a same-sex romance storyline coming his way.
Now we have an even more ridiculous walk-off, this time on One Live to Live. Patricia Mauceri, who plays the mother of one of the principal male characters on the show, Cristian, refused to act in a storyline that portrays her character as accepting of homosexuality because she is Latina.
“OLTL” was taping scenes in late-June concerning roommates Cristian, Layla and Fish. (They'll air in September.) Cristian and Layla suspect that sweet cop Fish is gay, but aren't sure how to approach him about it. So they buy a book about how to tell if you're gay and plan to give it to him.
Cristian's mom, Carlotta, was supposed to find the book and assume Cristian is gay. Her reaction was scripted to be very accepting and even amused, citing his love of art and fondness for going shirtless as signs she should have recognized.
But Mauceri, who has played diner purveyor Carlotta Vega for 14 years, refused to play the story as written, saying a Latina mother would not be so accepting. Rather, Mauceri rewrote the scenes to make Carlotta confused and troubled, and submitted them to “OLTL” execs.
“That's not the story we're telling,” responded an exec.
And so the soap execs brought in another actress, Saundra Santiago (I remember her from Miami Vice), who didn't have a problem with the part.
I understand Mauceri's point that there is a problem with homophobia in segments of the religious, culturally conservative Latino community, but OLTL is not a documentary — soaps deal with real-life issues, but they also deal in evil twins, demonic possessions, rampant multiple personality disorder cases, baby swapping and all sorts of other BS all the time. The fact of the matter is that in this particular case, it would be refreshing to see some modeling out there — that not every Latino family is full of raging homophobes.
Considering the sparse acting opportunities out there today, you'd think that Mauceri, who has been on the show for years, would just suck it up and play the storyline out and move on to the next plot. I'm not sure that the dwindling soap shops (Guiding Light's the next one to bite the dust), are going to look favorably upon Mauceri if she's going to walk regarding something this minor in the overall scheme of things.

HMMM
In this context, doesn’t acceptance become a weird aberration rather than a normal reaction?
If She Thinks Soaps Imitate Real Life…… I just have one word for her: Passions
If “fondness for going shirtless” is a sign of gayness, then every male character on network soaps must be gay. Hmm…I may have to start watching.
This is the EndI believe this represents the end of civilized society as we know it. Oh wait, it’s just a soap. Sorry for the over-reaction.
Does this idiot understand what it means to be an actor? The concept is that you portray a character. It doesn’t mean you ARE the character. What a fucking moron.
SillyI come from a Mexican family, and I can say I got complete acceptance from 98% of my family (including extended aunts, uncles and cousins). Not every religious family is bigoted. This actor is just acting stupid.
So how comeWe never hear of actors refusing to play murderers on moral grounds? It means, I suppose, that we are worse than murderers!
You’d think we’d hold even more fascination for actors up to a challenge!
No worries…She can tour the right-wingnut circuit with Carrie Prejean and Sarah Palin and their ilk and get paid to claim martyrdom. I think she’ll wind up with a very lucrative cash cow when this is all over.
So ridiculousbecause as I type, Guiding Light has been showcasing a great lesbian story and couple. Otalia forever. Actress Crystal Chappell has been on the show for 10 years….she is doing us proud with her portrayal of Olivia Spencer. Hot.
Lessee…Gwen Araujo’s mom, Sylvia Guerrero, at first rejected her daughter, biut grew to accept her change, then became Gwen’s fiercest defender after her horrendous murder.
Too bad Patricia Mauceri is too bigoted to play a sympathetic and affirming role.
FTW!!LOL!!
Yup, this and DOOL’s floating Marlena when she was possessed by demons…
She gave a great interviewrecently, about going back to DOOL and the Otalia storyline.
She’s obviously never metmost of the mothers of my Latin@ LGBT friends. Or the somewhat older Chicana friend who tried to set me up with her son (who’s my age, and turned out to be straight).
Mauceri has done some anti-abortion wingnut circuit appearancesas well, so this does not surprise me one bit.
So right. Also, her resignation could be a featured bullet point on her résumé should she ever decide to apply for a position in Palin’s cabinet.
(And please, don’t ask me of what department she’s qualified to be the secretary. In Palin’s cabinet? Any.)
As a man who is married to a Latino man whose parents were accepting of him from day one…as opposed to my WHITE parents who disowned me, I take great offense to the assumption that the ONLY way, or the “proper” way, to portray a “Latina” in a gay story line is unaccepting or confused and conflicted.
There are plenty of gay supportive Latino(a)s just as there are plenty of nonsupportive White people.
