Just like Ted Haggard, Gov. Mark Sanford's “little Sanford” took over the South Carolina governor and was led to his Argentine concubine by Satan, according to his spiritual adviser.
Each Sunday afternoon in May, Gov. Mark Sanford and his wife hosted five other couples at the executive mansion for a spiritual “boot camp.” Topics discussed during the hour-and-a-half-long sessions included forgiveness and “not loving your wife as Christ loved the church.”
…In an interview with The Associated Press this weekend at his Columbia office, just blocks from the State House, [Warren "Cubby"] Culbertson said he believed his friend when he said that this was his only marital transgression. He thinks Sanford was simply caught off guard by “the power of darkness.”
…”God hates lawlessness and is tireless in His desire to dissuade man from his fascination with lawlessness,” reads a paper titled “Cubby's Talks.” “Our hearts are lions' dens of devouring lusts. Lawlessness torments righteous souls every day.”
Culbertson does not believe the other woman went out of her way to seduce a married man. When asked if he had met Maria, Culbertson paused, then looked up, an embarrassed smile creasing his face. “I'm not going to comment,” he said.

Define ‘darkness’Well, he might have been caught off guard by the ‘power of darkness’ – which seems to be right between his stomach and his legs … So tired of this BS.
Aren’t those idiots the ones who still think that Clinton should have been impeached for having sex with Monika L. and lying about it? How about being Governor of a state and being MIA for a few days because ‘the power of darkness’ made him go and hook up with his girlfriend in South America?
Uh OHCan we smell the next statement? Perhaps all those NE U.S. same sex marriages are destroying someones marriage in S.C.?
The faux “Mea Culpa”is fascinating, particularly in terms of this interview. So Sanford’s friends knew Maria it seems. So, the old boy network did not try and dissuade Sanford when it was ongoing, only now that he is caught and their shallow and self serving public Christianity is open to question….
Pure Chauvinism…
“No comment”?That means not only had he met her, probably fucked her.
The girlfriend is irrelevant…Whether he was “sparking in Argentina” or simply playing golf – the fact that he abdicated his executive duties for almost a week without making any provision for those responsibilities to be carried out in his absence is the real problem here.
How would you like to be a death row inmate needing a final reprieve from the governor only to be told that nobody knows where they are?
Late Spring is tornado season…how about an emergency need to deploy the National Guard for a disaster -
“Thank you for calling the Governor of South Carolina. No one is available to take your call at this time. Please leave a message after the tone, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Have a nice Day!”
That’s a bit puerile, David.-1
But he gets to blame the DEVIL. And there are many people willing to give him a pass for being AWOL. I agree with you as he was derelict in his duties and the reason for that really doesn’t matter.
The real problem is these conservative pukes want to dictate how other people are supposed to live their lives, and that is according to their interpretation of the bible. They are hypocrites, but since they claim to be christian that makes it all OK.
Argentina is a long flightfor a piece of ass. Don’t the bleached blonde beauty queens (I.Q. 50) in South Carolina have “power of darkness” between their legs for him ?
Maybe…Maybe he’s talking about dark people. They are enticing aren’t they, with their exotic skin and their heathen ways.
(sarcasm)
NoAs important as that is, I still think the mistress is relevant. He made a career for himself spouting “family values” and judging other people’s families.
LOL+1
Yeah, right…So it must have been this same ‘power of darkness’ that made Sanford vote against all those gay rights issues in his state. My mistake, that was his religious beliefs that made him do that. But of course it was the devil that made him cheat on his wife. How convenient.
I plan on having a big pizza party the minute that this homophobic hypocrite is drummed out of office.
That no comment isa mighty loud yes, That smile suggests that Culbertson may have a line or two under his feet.
Pam, I’m sure I’m not the only one seeing the clock face on the Dallas Principles to think of the
doomsday clock of the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists”.
Can we look forward to the time advancing with progress, and retarding on setbacks?

The power of DarknessSo, he named his penis darkness?
LOLThanks ol cranky! lmao… I needed that chuckle!
so….following this logic, he’ll have it amputated, right? ”If thy hand offends thee, cut it off….” I mean, if you REALLY believe that your penis is a portal for the devil to enter your soul, wouldn’t that be the next logical step?
Oh, please. “Our hearts are lions’ dens of devouring lusts. Lawlessness torments righteous souls every day.”
I wish these pasty, repressed fools would get over themselves already.
As many have pointed out, who gives a hoot where this guy is dipping his wick? The point is he left his post for a week, was incommunicado for that week and he misused taxpayer money. Why is it all the GOP can think about is making sure he does a proper mea culpa and stays with his wife?
Add another +1 from me.
His wifethe lovely Jenny, everyone’s favorite aggrieved spouse, already tried that one: she actually put out a statement saying her marriage was fine till they started “passine all those laws” and Mark then somehow felt that is was ok to take up with this other woman………of course he’s been doing it for 20 years but she doesn’t talk about it…
Neither hypocrisy nor adultery are actionable in impeachment proceedingsClinton was impeached for lying under oath – regardless of the spin that was put on it.
And hypocrisy, while distasteful, is all to common an attribute. If that were an acceptable criteria for dismissal from office, the halls of Congress would resemble a movie theater showing “Glitter” or “Water World”.
Nope, if the goal is to hold the Governor accountable, we need to focus on the abdication thing.
simply caught off guard by “the power of his penis”More like it.
Its this whole demonization of sex that results in this shit. You repress it, tell yourself, “Bad, bad!, and try to crush your natural inclinations with your mind… well, trying to crush your mind with your mind is kind of like trying to armwrestle yourself. It just doesn’t work.
Sex is not bad, sex is awesome. Its the best thing ever, as long as you don’t try to hurt anyone with it. And if Sanford had just listened to his dick, and got laid when the need arose-with the wife’s consent, of course-this shit wouldn’t have gone down so bad.
You know, I think people that chastise other people for getting laid in consensual ways to be fucking ridiculous. The hypocrisy of Sanford slamming GLBTs for wanting to have fun while he himself is out catting around is the real issue here, not ‘the forces of darkness’.
I swear, what this country needs is a National Day of Fucking. Just one day, when we all get together and pay homage to our loins.
The devil made him do it!Yeah, the girlfriend thing really shouldn’t be used to get rid of him. If someone working at McDonald’s or something disappeared for a week, they wouldn’t be coming back to a job. Why should he? If Jeffrey Immelt did the same thing, wouldn’t GE stockholders and board members be clamoring for his resignation? Why is this guy still governor?
I don’t recall reading those statementscan you post a link?
Adultery is still on the books as a crime in SC so for her to say that permissive laws allowing SSM is what made her husband think it was ok to have an affair is made even more ridiculous.
true butdereliction of duties and use of tax payer money for non-government purposes are. he left the state without leadership for 5 days and the fact he wrote a check (after he was caught) to reimburse the state for his last trip to Argentina does not make use of state funds a legitimate and acceptable loan instead of theft.
Well, they think Obama is Satan…http://thumbsnap.com/v/6a5NX5e…
actually, that was a parody news storyHere’s the link for that:
http://thediscust.com/?p=547
The site is actually a parody site, but a lot of people thought the story was real and sent it around Facebook and Twitter.
“with the wife’s consent, of course”That’s the sticky wicket, my friend.
Wasn’t that an old Star Trek episode?
Religionists — Full of s&*t as usual and think they can get away with that b.s.. Who do they think they are foolin? What a bunch of impotent, ignorant, delusional, hypocritical pols.
the force is strong with this one..What else can we say when the freepers play the ‘power of darkness’ card? I am seriously dumbfounded and speechless x.X
Feels like I’m living in a fantasy world after reading his statements. WTF!
Good way to …diffuse blame.
a: Sorry officer it wasn’t my fault I was speeding, it’s that darn darkness.
b: in the name of christ, you are free to go.
Hour and a half, every Sunday…. with 5 other couples????That is so sick as to be almost unbelievable. Sorry folks… Needing someone else to tell you every Sunday what is good and what is bad is sick.
Needing someone else to tell you every Sunday…Isn’t that called “church”?
I mean, 5 couples or 50, what is the difference?
Power of Darkness RevealedPersonally, I believe it is the power of Darkness that brought slavery to South Carolina, established the system of sharecropping that ruled farming there for many decades, and enforced the laws of Jim Crow.
Sex in Argentina seems somewhat beneath the power of Darkness’s level of attention.
On the other hand, I DO believe it is the power of Darkness that causes the people of South Carolina to continue to vote for men like Mark Sanford, George Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Strom Thurmond.
YepI was guilty of doing that, although I printed a retraction and to be fair, irony is pretty much impossible since there actually millions of people who would say that and not be joking.
Actually NPRhad an interview with the author of the book “The Family” the other day. Because Sanford is part of this group or at least involved with them.
The scary part, was the comment Sanford made “That I am like David.” Which was confusing, until I heard what it really meant.
The Family (a “Christian” organization) believes they are like David. This is based on the question, “why was King David considered so great? He was a terrible man and did terrible things, so why was he considered great.” The Family’s answer? That David was great because God choose him, therefore it doesn’t matter what David did in his life, he was still great because he was God’s chosen servant.
So Sandford is saying that he can do whatever he wants and it doesn’t matter because he is God’s chosen servant.
There are also a lot of other issues regarding The Family, like did you know they created the Presidential Prayer Breakfast? They do not have churches or a real organized “religion” but receive religious tax exemptions, they have a house on K Street that they rent out to US Representatives at a VERY reduced price (those people almost always have “R’s” at the end of their titles).
Wify-pooLet’s not forget his wife being the proper domestic martyr, forgiving her Godly husband for straying.
no leadershipI think it’s possible a case can be made that South Carolina on auto-pilot was actually better off without his leadership than with.
