Imagine a conservative “Christian” organization using the other f-word to describe gay men. No “reputable” religious right organization would use that term to describe gay men these days — they know the focus they would receive on using that kind of expressed hate speech would be blistering, and define their particular organization as pariah organization among the civil, political classes.
And yet, the conservative “Christian” organization that originally dreamed up the ’30 Sexual Orientations’ [an idea that the website of Republicans in Congress picked up for their Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 webpage (when that webpage linked to a webpage that listed DSM-IV codes on Sexual and gender identity disorder)] thinks nothing of frequently and repeatedly using the pejorative she-male in their webpages.
The most recent example of this organization — the Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) — using the pejorative she-male
on their webpages comes their June 22nd piece by their Executive Director Andrea Lafferty, entitled It’s Baaackkk: ENDA!. In her piece, Lafferty states the following about a fully inclusive ENDA — calling Rep. Barney Frank’s legislative aide Diego Sanchez by the pejorative (emphasis added):
What made the ENDA debate almost enjoyable during the last Congress was the major “drama-rama” over which version of ENDA to bring to the floor for a vote. For months gays and transgender activists fought among themselves over whether or not to include “gender identity” in the bill. The drag queens and transsexuals wanted “gender identity,” but Frank finally agreed to remove “gender identity” from the legislation in order to try to get it passed.
However, this is a new Congress and a new President who is a big supporter of all things LGBT. This new bill will include “gender identity,” because Frank knows that Obama is cozy with the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) crowd and can be counted on to push the LGBT agenda.
Frank’s senior policy advisor on ENDA is Diego Sanchez, who is described as a “transgender.” Sanchez is a woman who either went through a sex change operation; or is living as a man, but hasn’t had any surgery, or is a she-male who went through half of the operation. If this is the case, Diego had his breasts surgically removed, but still maintains female characteristics below the waist.
The article goes on to talk about bathroom use for folk like Mr. Sanchez.
So why aren’t our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organizations in Washington calling out the TVC for their use of pejoratives — while pointing out that the Republican’s in Congress got their sexual orientations talking point for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act from an organization that uses the dehumanizing, anti-transgender pejorative she-male on a regular basis? A term that transgender people consider at least as offensive as the other f-word?
I don’t know. One of our DC based LGBT new or legacy media sources should be asking our LGBT civil rights organizations that.

Who’d have thought…that they would be against letting Tammy Faye Baker watch children?
I suppose the religious right, to be consistent with its “culture of life” thingie, would have to discriminate against the undead, though.
because prejudice against trans-peopleis unfortunaely acceptable to many LGB Americans
Notice…That they don’t show a picture of Diego? Because if they did, people would realize how ridiculous their whole argument is. They always use pictures of drag queens or gender variant trans women to scare people. They are nasty, cruel, vile human beings that traffic in fear.
Note as well they are aware of that:They used the right pronouns.
These are the same people who are saying criminals should be excluded…from hate crimes laws.
After all, they feel they should be allowed to beat other humans beings to death — which is why they fail to see the inherent failure of their labeling hate crimes pedophile protection bills.
If its a protection, what is it supposedly protecting people from? Why, violence by others, of course.
At least we know who they will go after next.
TVC is a recognized Hate Group, absolutely no different than Westboro. Far fringe lunatics known to want to kill others.
Remember to mention that when you speak of them, so their nature is always clearly described — much like we do when speaking about the Ku Klux Klan, who did, in fact, kill others.
They do have 2 pics of Diego in the piece……included with their article…Doublecheck the link to the TVC article. The article includes a headshot of Diego from a Bay Windows article, and a photo of Diego at the 2007 Congressional Hearing on Trans Discrimination.
TVC hate group….I think TVC earned their mantle as one of SPLC’s hate groups when Lou Sheldon suggested that sodomites (his
favourite term) should be rounded up and placed in internment
camps. I’m sure he would want to be front and centre at the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Dachau.
Autumn, I’m surprised at youThis is the Traditional Values Coalition you are writing about: lies, bigotry and hate are their stock-in-trade. The only thing surprising about this new web notice is that anyone is surprised.
That said, I agree that the gross (in multiple senses of the word) hypocricy of the TVC needs to be pointed out as often as it comes up. Hopefully, it will not become a full time job. Thank you for being on top of this.
I think the strange part of this……is that one of the two major political parties in the U.S. is picking up the talking points of this bigoted organization.
That’s what I find is the incredible part: This organization isn’t being condemned for it’s public bigotry in the public square by Christian groups, Democrats, or LGBT civil rights organizations, but at the same time it’s ideas are making it into mainstream discourse of the Republican party as if the ideas are reasonable ideas coming from reasonable people.
It’s literally unbelievable — and at the same time apparently true.
Not surprising at all…Not at all surprising from the religious right nazis, and the non-reaction from HRC is not surprising either. It is not LGBT but LGB(t). Do not support or donate to any group led by the gays or lesbians. They’ll throw you under the bus every time.
IronicallyWhen I clicked on the link to read this vile piece of garbage from TVC, right next to the story was an ad for the website http://www.ladyboykisses.com above which was the line “Dating with Shemales”!
Pam, you need to please try and screen these ads or at least the source these ads are coming from and let them know such ads are offensive and need to be removed from their lineup.
I agree somewhat..but, be careful to not throw the LGB Americans who simply have ignorance about trans issues in that same pool.
There is a strange rift between the LGB and T. Sometimes out of hate, sometimes out of misunderstanding and mostly out of ignorance. My hopes in the situation is to better understand trans issues and not be ignorant. I really feel the T belongs in LGBT.
That being said, a lot of gay people don’t follow the issues.. they don’t know what terms are considered inflammatory to transgendered people. I didn’t know many trans-folk til I moved to Asia. Over there, they call themselves “shemales” without blinking an eye. It always did seem strange, but I went with the flow. Now that I’m back in the US, I realize the rules are completely different. I embrace that, and that’s why I follow Autumn’s stories and blogs. She’s doing a service far beyond what the mainstream LGBT groups do, and I commend her for that.
bathroom obsessionWhat I don’t understand is the obsession these anti-trans people have with bathrooms. Do they think a man would go through the operations, hormone treatments and everything else required to transition just to be able to go into a womens bathroom? What do they think this person will see? People pooping (male, female, in-transition) is not erotic. Yet every anti-trans screed I’ve seen eventually trots out the bathroom argument. Get your minds out of the bathroom, people!!
JUST the Republican party?ideas are making it into mainstream discourse of the Republican party as if the ideas are reasonable ideas coming from reasonable people.
It’s not limited to Rethugs, though we expect such christian hate screed from them. I seem to remember a certain DOMA brief from a few weeks back from the Democratic Adminstration’s DOJ floating around…let’s see, where did I put that…
the S-wordPossibly if you drum into the media that she-male is SO OFFENSIVE you refer to it as the S-word, they might equate it to other unspeakable slurs….just an idea.
btw…gay men are STILL called sodomites and pederists by the truely unenlightened christian sites.
Because (they think) we are freaksTo them we are twisted wanna-be “gurls” who either get our rocks off dressing up in frilly frocks or have a demented castration fetish.
That and the whole pedophile in the potty meme.

It’s 2009, Ignorance as an excuse is getting stale.I’m not writing this to be too inflammatory and this isn’t really directed at you but it’s getting to the point where if someone hasn’t taken the time to do at least a little reading then they’re being willfully ignorant.
wasn’t really using it as an excusea lot of their ignorance is really out of a plain lack of interest, I agree.
also, in my life, I haven’t met too many transgender activists. I’d have to say that 95% of the transgendered people I know.. they keep it a secret. I’ve been dropped by T friends who were looking to just assimilate and get on with life, do I understand that? Yes. Do many others? No.
Our chances to actually get information from sources in real life are limited. They have to actually seek it on the internet. I’m not giving anyone excuses, nor am I blaming the transgendered community either. It’s a mess and I applaud anyone who has a solution.
