ferraro@glaad.orgJune 2, 2009 – In a lengthy May 28 tirade on the Rob, Arnie & Dawn in the Morning radio show heard in Sacramento, California on KRXQ 98.5 FM and Reno, Nevada on KDOT 104.5 FM, hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States verbally attacked transgender children. While discussing a recent story about a transgender child in Omaha, Nebraska and her parents’ decision to support her transition, the two hosts spent more than 30 minutes explicitly promoting child abuse of and making cruel, dehumanizing and defamatory comments toward transgender children.
You can listen to the entire segment beginning at 4:48 by clicking this link:

20Transgender%20Children%20In%20America.mp3Among the comments made by the hosts:
ROB WILLIAMS [11:12]: This is a weird person who is demanding attention. And when it’s a child, all it takes is a hug, maybe some tough love or anything in between. When your little boy said, ‘Mommy, I want to walk around in a dress.’ You tell them no cause that’s not what boys do. But that’s not what we’re doing in this culture.
ARNIE STATES [13:27]: If my son, God forbid, if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes. I would throw a shoe at him. Because you know what? Boys don’t wear high heels. And in my house, they definitely don’t wear high heels.
ROB WILLIAMS [17:45]: Dawn, they are freaks. They are abnormal. Not because they’re girls trapped in boys bodies but because they have a mental disorder that needs to be somehow gotten out of them. That’s where therapy could help them.
ROB WILLIAMS [18:15]: Or because they were molested. You know a lot of times these transgenders were molested. And you need to work with them on that. The point is you don’t allow the behavior. You cure the cause!
[More of the GLAAD Action Alert below the fold.]
ARNIE STATES [21:30]: You got a boy saying, ‘I wanna wear dresses.’ I’m going to look at him and go, ‘You know what? You’re a little idiot! You little dumbass! Look, you are a boy! Boys don’t wear dresses.’ARNIE STATES [29:22]: You know, my favorite part about hearing these stories about the kids in high school, who the entire high school caters around, lets the boy wear the dress. I look forward to when they go out into society and society beats them down. And they end up in therapy.
To her credit, co-host Dawn Rossi stood up to Williams and States during the segment.
Despite her apparent lack of familiarity with transgender issues, Rossi repeatedly defended transgender people and made an on-air apology for her colleagues’ defamatory remarks.
TAKE ACTION NOW!
Please contact KRXQ management in Sacramento, California, where the show is produced and demand that radio show hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States publicly apologize. Call on KRXQ to hold Williams and States accountable for their remarks and establish clear standards to ensure their media platform will not be used to condone or promote violence against any parts of the communities they serve.John Geary

Oh AutumnI know how this kind of crap makes you feel and I am sorry that we all have to live in this f**cked up world. You are a beautiful person and in so many ways much better than most. Please know that you are loved and that there are millions of people who feel the same way.
These knuckle heads are trying to stir up a backlash to the domestic partnership bill that got passed in Nevada on Sunday. It’s a shame that these most likely Christian people spew such hate and that they have to use transgender people to do it. In their eyes, harming other people is justified under the bible. It’s a disgusting shame.
I’m calling the radio station right now.
John
I wrote to the Vice President and General Manager and advised him that child abuse is illegal.I also suggested that he learn something about transgender people and put together some minimal standards for his station. I didn’t bother to write to the people (?) who said these things on the air. They are beyond hope.
These guys are such cold hearted idiotsJudgmental, foolish, jerks. Dawn at least has a heart.
Looking at their website…Rob and Arnie are purposely vicious towards Dawn, too. Arrogant, misogynistic little scheissekopfen, they are.
I’d be sending emails to The View tooThey did a segment (recent, not sure) on the story in Oprahs magazine about older women leaving men for other women. Barbara speculated that maybe it’s because they couldn’t get other men; Elisabeth opined that it could be “hormones”; and Sherri said she felt safe and protected with men and could not possibly feel that with a woman. When Joy joked that maybe she could feel protected with Martina Navratilova, Sherri wanted to practically puke. These fucking women are homophobic jerks and need to be taken to task once in a while.
Does anyone know who the sponsors are?My suggestion is to write the sponsors of the show and complain to them, and ask them if they want to be associated with this hate speech. The station probably welcomes all this attention while the sponsors will not.
And whenanother trans kid like Angie gets killed, these same hatemongers will be wringing their hands, claiming “We’re not responsible! How can you say we ever promoted that kind of violence!” Right-wing hate radio–not just Limbaugh but “entertainers’ like these creeps–is a disease. And no matter how much violence they incite, they’ll keep getting a free pass in the Land of the Free.
Good idea.They issued an ‘apology’…
http://glaadblog.org/2009/06/0…
…but ignoring it and going to the sponsors would be the next action to take. Go to their website and pick one.

Snapple tea or an iPhone, anyone?
From HuffPo on thisGlad to see this getting coverage over there.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…
Some folks in the comments section following the piece offer up lists of sponsors and the conact info for the radio station. If Imus can lose a job over disgusting comments about black women college basketball players, these hateful trash-talkers should also.
I saw this late last night from Huffington PostWith the Blend down, I thought of Autumn and the trans people who contribute here. I could hardly sleep I got so G*D DAMN angry, and I posted a link at HuffPo from Q-Tips how to contact the station. Another poster got a list of the station’s advertisers.
The whole list of advertisers can be found here: http://www.krxq.net/pages/2930…
Here’s some of the big ones:

THIS case should be what is used to make the legal case for Community Standards, there should be a line in the sand, ANY broadcaster or station which advocates verbal abuse, physical abuse, and death of a child, ANY F*CKIN child…you aren’t on the air…..PERIOD
If you had substituted doing this to a female child, a disabled child, a racially mixed child, a poor child
THERE STATION would be GONE!
Thanks for reporting this Autumn, and I’m sure it hits closer to your heart because it is so unimaginably cruel and ugly, and you are tender hearted.
I hope someone posts photos of these Hate JocksI want them instantly recognisable on the street, to be jeered and spit on EVERY where they go.
ask and you receive here’s a link to a photo promo of these putrid geeks http://www.robarnieanddawn.com/
thanks TexasDemo at HuffPo
spread this to EVERY LGBT site
call children’s protective servicesI’d have Children’s Protective Custody camped on these loser’s doorsteps, if they can take 400 FLDS children, then these HATE jock’s kids should be taken, and verify they aren’t facing abuse.
This Is Outrageous I’m firing up my phones and the rest of the machines. I don’t want an apology, I want those guys fired and then arrested for advocating child abuse.
(I’m spitting nails right now)
Thier SponsorsWhile I was listen to the garbage that they were saying to justify their hate speech and so called apology, I jotted down these sponsors…
AT&T Go Phone – “Media Inquires” I am using the “Corporate Citizenship” email address
BMI Mortgage & Realty – “Contact us”
AM/PM Stores – “Contact us”
Hooters – “Contact us”
I not going to even bother to email Hooters, this is their type of audience
I added this to America Bloghere’s GLAAD action alert
http://www.myhusbandbetty.com/…
DJ’s called this a joke, and station manager DEFENDED THEM http://www.kcra.com/news/19643…
KRXQ’s station manager defended the DJs.
“The show is filled with hyperbole and they use exaggerations to make a point,” Jim Fox said.
OH PH*CK NO!
Who is Who?!Why is advocating violence okay here? The GLBT community has become incredibly upset over this segment because they perceived it as a call for violence against us and against children. But then how can we ever allow that same sentiment to come past our own lips? Dawn Rossi is in that promo pic, are you telling me that no one would spit on her out of ignorance of her defence of us? (Gay Man Here) Most emails to the show on this were angry, inarticulate calls for the shows demise. One email even warned the hosts that some California transgenders would kill them and their families!
We face so much as a community because of the continuing ignorance of us and who we are. Yet, we have no problems jumping right on the ignorance chain. Though very offensive, those of us who know this show understand its use of exaggeration to make points, and we understand that Arnie, despite his comments, would not beat a child, never ever.
I’ve seen articles attributing Arnie’s sentences to Rob and visa versa. In these comments it is advocated to call CPS to take their children, though neither one has any. Most comments identify the show as “Right-Wing Talk Radio”, yet this isn’t a political talk radio show. For heavens sakes every day includes a bit of entertainment birthdays, ending with porn star birthdays! (Bow chicha Bow-wow)
Now for the comments that no one has the right to offend people, you have destroyed free-speech. Free-speech is defined about the right to hurt people’s feelings. If no one was offended, there would be nothing to protect. The leaders in our history who evolved us always offended a great deal of people, if not almost universally. There were no end of people offended by Martin Luther King Jr, Gandhi, Galileo and many more. I have to allow and fight for the right to spew ignorant offensive things, because there will be no shortage of times that people will perceive my legitimate arguments in such a way. The answer is never to silence your critics, the answer it to win the debate. We must remember this because right now we have the benefit of being on the side who gets to demand our adversaries be silenced, but later it can again be us who is not allowed to speak.
Lastly it is sad the the good this show does is not acknowledged. So many abused people have called this show’s Dr. Rob segment and received caring, helpful advise from the hosts and the show’s audience. From victims of Rape and child abuse to people struggling against alcohol and substance addiction. The show strongly advocates children’s causes and raises millions of dollars for St. Jude’s Children’s hospital, saving the lives of kids who otherwise could not afford to get the care they need. How ironic is it, that there may well be transgender individuals who owe their lives to the donations given to St. Jude’s.
I am so saddened to watch my community turn into the monster while they try to fight the good fight, and I fear what we will be later when we are again facing the loss of freedoms. It is also ironic knowing the “Married with Children” effect, where by being offended and starting a silence campaign the offending show is made very popular. If you despise the fact that these opinions are being given over the airwaves, understand that you’ve just hand-delivered an even bigger soapbox.
They have a pollYou can go here & vote http://www.robarnieanddawn.com…
ughYou guys don’t know what you’re saying. This makes me sickend to be associated with the LGBT community. Let me assure you they were not in any way shape or form advocating violence toward children. Did you know that they have raised millions of dollars for the UC davis childrens fund??? they love children. and i think everyone jumping on this anti-RAD bandwagon knows this. just call a spade a spade: you can’t tolerate an opinion so different from your own. i would think that the LGBT community of all people would be above this kind of facism. and for the record i absolutly disagree with their opinions on transgendered individuals…the comments in fact stirred rage inside me…just jesus tapdancing christ it’s their right to have that opinion. and that;s the POINT of the show to reflect society and showcase the viewpoints that exsist. To add, I grew up bisexual in a very conservative town…the rob arnie and dawn show inspired me from the very beginning to believe in myself and find that strength from within. i may not agree with one word you are saying but i will defend to the death your right to say it. this is still america right?
my letter:
Hey guys,
That first call you took (the guy showing his support) actually made me cry because I feel the same way. I’ve also listened since I was a freshman in high school and your show has gotten me through some extremely tough times over the years. I was a victim of “bullying” in high school and rob’s daily words of wisdom gave me the strength to overcome and love myself. Because of your show, I began to understand that there’s nothing more important than being true to myself and finding that strength from within. I certainly can’t begin to comprehend the struggles of a transgendered child…I was merely a bisexual atheist in a very conservative high school.
But I digress. It would be awful AWFUL if the rob arnie and dawn show were shut down. I don’t really think that could happen but still the prospect is horrifying. We need you guys.
And by the way…I don’t agree with what was said about transgendered people. not at all. i was listening to that segment while doing dishes and–in an arnie like move–i threw down a salad plate in rage at one of arnie’s comment (ironic). but never for a second did i want rob or arnie silenced or taken off the air. yes, i wish you didn’t feel the way you do. i wish these opinions didn’t exist. but goddammit it’s your right to say it.
and frankly, the LGBT community of all groups people should comprehend this. saying that rob arnie and dawns opinions will lead to hate crimes makes as much sense as saying that gay is contagious or gay adoption leads to more gay children. these are the sort of arguments that piss us off so much…well it works both ways people. do you mean it as i do when you preach tolerance over and over? or are you just full of shit. i don’t think people actually believe rob and arnie are endorsing hate crimes that’s so absurd…people are angry because rob and arnie have an opinion that they don’t approve of.
don’t you fucking understand how fucking scary and dangerous this mindset is????????!!!! i’m so angry right now and i’m embarrassed to be associated with the LGBT community (hopefully it’s just the vocal minority).
and it’s disgusting and awful, i can’t stop crying that people are threatening violence and/or murder against rob and arnie. hypocritical much? but i’m so worried and scared for you guys, please PLEASE stay safe.
i’m so pissed. can i just wrap up this letter by quoting Voltaire: I may not agree with one word you are saying, but i will defend TO THE DEATH your right to say it. This attitude threatens the very fiber of this nation. awful horrible disgusting. guys, go galt if you have to…just stay safe.
So let me get this straight.Because they did something good in the past, that excuses them for being bigots?
Sorry, that doesn’t hold water.
I don’t advocate violence against them, calling CPS on them, or even trying to find some way to file charges against them for inciting violence, or even, really, moving to have them silenced, and specifically kept my comments to the Station Manager as professional as possible.
I agree that they’re perfectly able to say anything they wish on the air (with the caveat of the FCC not objecting). But to expect nobody to call them on it when they produce a segment like this?
Wow.
Perhaps something they did in a segment helped you in some meaningful way, I’m glad they could help.
But that, in no way, shape, or form, is going to keep me from criticising them for this. I lived in Reno for ~4 years, and their show was usually the one I’d catch while spinning through the dial, and promptly hit the seek button again, because it was usually lowest common denominator.
I voted dozens of times didn’t phase the pollBut I noticed earlier 58% thought it was free speech, and 30% thought it was way over the line
last I saw the free speech was down to 40% and over the line was 33%
here’s an image I made, it’s what I do when I need to work off my anger
http://img.villagephotos.com/p…

WE ARE ALL F*CKING P*SSEDThe difference is we vent our anger at ADULTS, and said nothing about myriads of insults these two hate jocks have spewed, and they’ve had to pay TWO $55,000.00 fines for actionable comments BEFORE.
You start F*CKING attacking kids….anyone’s kids, and you have no comprehension of the FURY YOU WILL UNLEASH.
I suggest you picture a lioness and something attacking her cubs.
Free Speech is protecting a person’s speech from GOVERNMENT silencing itEVEN then not all speech is protected, yelling fire in a crowded theater, or inciting riots, or advocating armed government insurrection…aren’t covered.
When you advocate endangering CHILDREN….that’s way over the line.
Boycotting is also free speech, so is an advertiser removing their ads.
Just AskingDid anyone take the time today to listen to the audio files posted on their website?
This is the show that ran the feature, “The Silent Epidemic” for years bringing to our attention the overwhelming problem of abused children in this country, when it seemed no one else would. These are the guys that advocated strongly that parents who leave their children to die in hot cars be punished and not let off because “They’ve already gone through enough.”
What is happening here is that the community is reacting to a perception, not reality, and so many are becoming very ugly and hateful themselves in the process.
I fear we are becoming what we hate.
Hey, that’s greatI don’t know anybody that advocates child abuse.
Not personally anyway.
But isn’t that just what they were advocating in this segment?
I stand by my previous statement. Good deeds in the past do not excuse Bigotry and Hate in the present. Whether they thought they were being clever and funny, or not.
Did you listen? At the Rob, Arnie and Dawn website are posted audio files of their response to this controversy. It appears that Dawn spoke with the same Autumn who posted the article to this blog. (Checking the About Autumn page seems to jive completely with what Dawn relayed about the Autumn she had talked to.)
I feel that in no way did the advocate violence against children and such a thing is against their very nature. I’m sorry you didn’t like the show and aren’t familiar with these aspects of Rob or Arnie.
Ahh, And there you would be wrong.I’m quite familiar with them.
Lived in Reno for ~4 years, heard their show, multiple times, never did care for it, felt like a low-rent Howard Stern or Opie and Anthony to me.
Most of their segments, to me, are rather purile and un-entertaining. But I’m hardly the arbiter of good taste to sit here and tell you not to listen.
You don’t consider statements such as:
“And, it’s more of the political correct bull crap — that you don’t want to tell a kid he’s a freak [*with lisp*] ’cause it might hurt his feelings.[*end lisp*] If my son — God forbid — if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes. I would throw a shoe at him because y’know what? Boys don’t wear high heels.
–Rob Williams of Rob, Arnie, and Dawn In The Morning™”
To be advocacy for violence against children?
Do they actually need to be beating the crap out of the kid with a shoe, on air or something?
Wow.
No I wouldn’t listen to this CR*PI don’t listen to a lot of crud morons spew, Michael Weiner Savage, Glen Beck, Hannity.
No, The Aduio Files of Today’s Show (6/3)I was referring specifically to the audio files posted on the top of their main page of today’s show on this topic. That is what I was curious about. In it the comment was clarified and Arnie clearly stated that if he did have a child, of course he would never beat them.
No, I haven’tI may give it a listen tonight if I have some spare time.
But if he “Clearly stated that if he did have a child, of course he would never beat them.” Why did he say that on the air in the original segment?
He thought that was funny?
I fail to see the humour.
George Carlin
Denis Leary
Lenny Bruce
Lewis Black
Hell, even Lisa Lampanelli
All funny, and all not always nice people.
Their press release said the segment was a “joke” and people “just didn’t get it”.
What part was funny?
You’d have to be a pretty twisted person to find the original segment funny.
To Doc and mangotreatsThe fact that you side with these bigots shows your disdain towards the Transgendered. Libel and incitement to violence are not covered by free speech, but hey, it wasn’t against someone like you, so it’s ok, right?
Oh, they help children’s charities? So does Hamas. Maybe you should write something in their defense too.
Don’t worry though, what little pressure they’re getting will blow over soon, and these pigs will return to their hatespeech, more emboldened than ever, now that they know there are no consequences for them.
I just want you to know that you will have contributed to their “absolution”, no matter how moderately. Truly, you are a boon to the LGBT community.
In a Democracy aren’t the people the government? There are also more than one example in history where an impassioned group of people have used intimidation to silence others and that approach has lead us into dark places we never intended to go.
You advocated violence. The majority of people who wrote the show gave no other option but for the radio show to be gone, and many advocated direct violence.
I find it interesting that you didn’t address your own avocation for violence. You suggested the RAD logo, which includes Dawn Rossi, be distributed and people be encouraged to spit on these people. If someone took your suggestion, you can honestly tell me that would be the end of it, that they would only spit and not more.
Distributing a picture to encourage people to spit on bigots is unacceptable in its own right. But its worse that that, people are not going to realize that Dawn didn’t advocate this position but rather fought tooth and nail with her co-hosts the entire time become clearly infuriated. They aren’t going to know that she took the time to have phone conversation with several trans gender activists, including (most likely), the Autumn who posted this up at this blog. They aren’t going to know that she cried this morning sharing with everyone how one of the people relayed to her that “She would rather have a live daughter than a dead son” and how that person had to deal with christian belifs.
If they were going to spit or further assault they would end up doing it to Dawn as well.
Its a dark ugly place we’ve gone with this suggestion of violence
The Silence is DeafingNo one has given any sort of rejection of the calls for violence coming from peteyPornpig or others in the LGBT community… As if because those calls are against someone who isn’t like you, its ok…
For the record I heard the segment in question live. It had to be the most angry I have ever been, even more angry than I had been at earlier instances by Arnie stating that someone that people like me made the choice to be gay at some point. I however never heard what I perceived to be an incitement to violence.
I’ll re-reference mangotreat’s Voltaire quote, as it is such a deeply rooted belief of mine. If I do not stand up and speak that someone has the right to deeply offend me, I will one day wake up and not be able to use my own freedom of speech.
This struggle will never be won by demanding that people who offend us, even grievously, be not allowed to speak. It will be won by standing tall and boldly speaking the truth and finding the GLBT youth who need to hear it.
This struggle will most definitely be lost if we provide a single member of our community the acceptance of silence when they advocate violence.
I understand that my viewpoint that they did not advocate violence can be perplexing, and I respectfully understand and acknowledge that. I would just ask, respectively, that understanding is given to me and others like me who have been loyal listeners of this program for years and have reason to believe it when they state they never advocated violence. (I’ve been listening fairly regularly for 10 years).
Listening Now.And I’ve rarely heard such a pile of hooey, and weak rationalisations in my life.
Instead of having a reasonable discussion about issues, they’re going to go ahead and use the pain of others to get some laughs from people with very underdeveloped senses of humour.
Pretty much what I thought of them when I was living in Reno.
Dawn seems to be the only one on the show that has really given this any thought, and well, she’s basically there for Rob and Arnie to either 1) Make fun of, or 2) Run roughshod over.
who are you gonna believe me or your lying ears?
Sure……my grandpa (the DJs) makes searingly racist comments shouting from the front porch (airwaves), but come on, it’s o.k.! Sure it makes me angry sometimes, but other people think it’s funny, and that’s o.k. because he’s harmless!
Did i mention i have an emotional attachment to him that blinds me from any objective viewpoint to the harmful and possibly illegal acts he’ll incite? I live on the same street as you (bisexual vs. transgender), so if i’m o.k. with it you should be too!
Don’t you dare have them haul away (boycott sponsors) and arrest (levy fines against) my grandpa!
When someone spews threats and hate at innocent childrenIf being jeered and even spit on, is the worst they got…they should be down on their knees thanking God for protecting them.
I know several parents that if this kinda cr*p was spewed at their kid, would be much more HANDS ON.
Not OneNot one person in these comments said it was wrong to advocate any kind of violence against the members of this show. Not One.
Thank God for the wise readers. Dawn said that the leaders she spoke with were not filled with anger and hate, and sure enough Autumn proves that with her latest post.
I’ve laughed and cried with this show. After 10 years of listening in a weird way it feels like family. For Reno and Sacramento this show holds a special place for how it helped and supported us all after 9-11. And now people have no problem calling for its demise and worse the physical abuse and harm to its members. People have no problem reducing the individuals to mere one dimensional caricatures. People have no problem miscategorizing a morning radio show as “right-wing talk radio.” Even I have been accused of having feelings of disgust to trans-gender individuals, while no one knows anything about me beyond how I’ve been able to repesent myself in a handful of paragraphs.
I’ve seen this before, and I know its name: bigotry.
I would like to thank Autumn for her post. My view of my own community has been forever altered, and it scares me. It gives me hope that leaders like Autumn “get it” and know the right way to confront bigotry.
Oh, and by the way? I did have that bigoted grandpa, who was filled with hate. That hate was broken one day, the day he learned that he had a gay grandson. The way I see so many acting would have only deepened his hate and validated his worldview…. With nothing more than honesty about who I was, he had to be honest with himself that it was either his hate, or the unconditional love that he had always professed.
Funny how you choose toIgnore my First post in this thread.
And I quote:
“I don’t advocate violence against them, calling CPS on them, or even trying to find some way to file charges against them for inciting violence, or even, really, moving to have them silenced, and specifically kept my comments to the Station Manager as professional as possible. ”
Those are my words.
I claim them.
So where is your assertation that NOBODY said it was wrong?
My ApologiesI was focused on the responses I was receiving and neglected to notice your earlier post.
