UPDATE: Oregon Gary’s Washington operative, Larry Stickney, posts his own straw poll that adds up to 86%, lol. See screen shot below the fold.
Oregonian Gary Randall posted a survey on his blog yesterday. He did so because he refused to accept the unsurprising news Monday that few of Washington State’s major religious right figures think it is wise to pursue the anti-domestic partnership referendum Gary is hawking in Washington. They can read and understand the polls, even if Gary can’t.
Today Oregon Gary reports some very interesting results from his online survey:
Faith and Freedom is getting a little different picture. With several hundreds filling out our survey, it is running, as of this morning, 98.8% who favor the referendum and 6.7% who oppose it. The other 1.5% aren’t sure.
Percentages apparently add up to 107 in Oregon Gary’s universe, not 100. But we all know Gary’s a wizard with the numbers.
Also, “several hundreds” responded? Big whoop. I can find 200 people to agree with just about anything. It’s the other 120,377 you’re not hearing from that I’d be concerned with, Gary. Remember, you need 120,577 valid signatures from Washington voters to qualify your referendum. And as an Oregon voter, you can’t even sign your own referenDUMB petition.
By the way, Gary, man up. It wasn’t Danny Westneat of the evil Seattle Times who surveyed the religious right majors of Washington, as you would have us think from your blog post. It was Bothell’s own Pastor Joe Fuiten of the Cedar Park Assembly of God. Look your adversary in the eye.UPDATE: Larry has had a straw poll running since mid-December, 2008 on his website. All along, “Defense of Marriage” has only been the top concern of about 20% of his readers. Dan Savage had a look at the poll back in March:
[M]ore of the respondents to its poll are concerned about illegal immigration (24.6%) and parental consent for abortion (23%) than are worried about defending the institution of marriage from people who want to, um, get married (20.2%). (Aren’t people who don’t want to get married a bigger threat? Or people who want to get divorced?) This probably wasn’t the result the Washington Values Alliance wanted when it posted this poll alongside info about its “Stand Up for Marriage” rally this Thursday in Olympia.
The ranking hadn’t changed until this week, when miraculously marriage has been elevated to the top position (but still only a top concern of about 20% of respondents). Note that just like Oregon Gary’s survey, the percentages don’t add up. In this case, they total to 86%. Larry? He not smart.

He won’t quit, will he?I mean, they never do, but this guy is even farther out of touch with reality than most of them. Every time I think we’ll never seen another one crazier that Maggie, Peter, Matt or whoever, another one comes along.
I’m glad you caught that mathematical errorI was saying to myself, “WTF”? In his world, evolution doesn’t exist, global climate change is a liberal hoax and the Cabbage Patch dolls are still popular. I think about half of the people who support his referendum might decide not to if they found out he isn’t even living in Washington. They’re pretty fierce about being independent.
Well he has an invested interest. Er, I mean vestedinterest in the proceeding. “Ca-CHING!” explains a lot of his tenacity, imo.
Spare Change? WHO the FAWK has ANY extra cash these days to donate to these equality lotteries? Maybe hard times will actually help us, by either taking the steam out of their “movement” or making them all homeless and unable to “fight”.
He’s as blind as he can beJust sees what he wants to see
Did he go to school in Texas?Sure looks like he subscribes to the TX School Board’s Math theory.
All I can say isthat most of Gary’s supporters put 10% of their income into the church offering plate every week to pay church salaries and building upkeep. Whereas I give my 10% to EqualEqual Rights Washington, where it will be used to accomplish something concrete.
The economy is hitting everyone hard, but many of us on both sides of the issue still have some discretionary funds. I deploy mine wisely. Gary’s supporters should review the financial history of his organizations and the track record of his associates before donating. If, that is, they want their money to be actually used to fight the homosexual scourge and not pocketed by Gary & Co.
Btw, did you know that Gary’s pal Larry Stickney has already pocketed over $13K this year in salary and consulting fees as campaign manager for John Koster, Snohomish County Council? As I’ve marveled in the past, Stickney still lists among his accomplishments his being campaign manager for Koster’s Congressional bid in 2000. Only thing is, Koster lost to a pro-LGBT opponent who still holds the seat. And Larry is Oregon Gary’s main operative in Washington, lol!
Gary’s SurveyIf you’d like to help Gary be sure he gets a valid statistical sample, you can vote in his survey at:
http://survey.constantcontact….
would it make a difference? he’ll just release whatever “results” suit him.
not to mentioneven if you answer that you do NOT support referendum 71, you are required to complete question No. 2 which asks how willing are you to support referendum 71…and then doesn’t give a “not willing” answer, only
financial
circulate petitions
pray
You’d think would-be supporters would get the message…
As of 4:45 PST, Gary still hadn’t fixed the math, but I, “the enemy”, was able to access the survey. Sorry Brad – guess you just don’t have the luck o’ the homo.
Po’ BoyGood to know, Lurleen. I’m just thinking of the many LGBTQ’s who are living well below the poverty level, and esp. of those who have been seriously hurt by inequality financially.
It’s VERY frustrating. Various kinds of mental distress and “illness” prevent many of us from participating in activism, and when one tries to live on $339 a month (fixed income), it is impossible to contribute.
It feels helpless, and like we’re all just watching from the sidelines but unable to do much besides cheer. Your own consistency in donating is laudable.
the best, most subversive kind of activism,is just to be your open and honest self. if you can manage that in the company of others, you’re contributing every minute of your life. i haven’t always been able to be a financially contributing street activist either, for various reasons, so i completely understand what you’re saying. you should also know that over ten thousand people read this blog every day, so your contributions have the potential to go far and wide. that’s powerful stuff. you, along with all the Blenders, may be having more of an impact than you realize.
SufferingDespite being an “Open Book” online and on my blog (warts, pain, rage, “assholio” moments and all), one of my main areas of focus is the real life consequences of NON-Equal Protection under the law….you know….the reason we NEED the laws?
Our movement seems to shy away from these stories, yet I think if heteros put themselves AND THEIR FAMILY into our shoes they’d “get it”.
Thanks for including me in a world I often feel excluded from.
