The Vermont House just took it’s final vote on the marriage equality bill, passing it 94-52. This is 6 votes shy of the 100 we need to override the governor’s veto.
You can help make the veto override happen! Scott Gortikov, Executive Director of MassEquality, tells how
The Vermont House voted with overwhelming support (95-52) last night to pass a marriage equality bill. Now, Governor Douglas is set to veto the bill.It is critical that we do everything we can to override the Governor’s veto. We are just votes away from overriding the veto and securing marriage equality in Vermont.

I’m in Tennessee.Hey, I’m a student in Tennessee. Even though I’m not a citizen of (and thus not a constituent in) Vermont, is there anything I can do do help out? I wasn’t sure if the phone bank was for Vermonters specifically. Thanks!
email or call them i am sure there is something useful they can have you do. thank you for helping!
call Samantha at (617) 878-2325, or

Why is Massachusetts getting involved in this?Seriously, if you’re not from Vermont or connected with Vermont in some fashion, please stay the hell out of this. Nothing personal. Vermonters don’t like people from out of state telling us what we should do and right now, all the barrage from out of staters is coming from the anti-marriage groups and, if anything, it’s helping us.
so if i called you and reminded you to call your legislatorsyou’d be upset? i’m certain that they are involved because they were asked to be.
Yeah.I’d be really annoyed if someone from out of state called me to tell me what to do. If this were coordinated by Vermont Freedom to Marry, I’d get it. I don’t want Mass Equality telling Vermonters what they should do. It will backfire and it will hurt us.
why are you assuming this isn’t being coordinated locally?
Because it’s coming from Mass Equalityif Vermont Freedom to Marry task force were coordinating this, they could post the announcement themselves.
Can someone contact themand ask their views/ thoughts/ suggestions?
Perhaps that would be a better option at this point.
no, the way it works isyour organization asks my organization to contact our membership. we ask them in turn to help call your membership to nudge them to call their legislators. this happens all the time on all issues.
do you want me to remove the diary?
i have an email in to them.if i don’t hear back in the next hour or two, i’ll consider taking the diary down. but i really don’t see why anyone should care where my phone resides if i were to call equality supporters and reminded them that there’s still work to do. i’d be surprised if vermont freedom to marry has the volunteer power to reach enough people on their own.
Yeah, but that’s the thingHaving lived both inside and outside of New England, I can see both of your points on this.
Some New Englanders would rather, out of their own pride and independence (or stubbornness; take your pick), discuss and fight this sort of battle internally.
Right or wrong. It’s just the way they are. Goodness knows, I come from a long line of those and can be that way myself.
They appreciate the support, yet see it as- well, not CHARITY, but sort of. Unsolicited assistance, maybe. It’s a delicate thing and hard to explain fully.
Versus the other side- trying to help a neighbor with a problem. Being helpful, good and giving out of sheer human decency. Wanting to lend a hand with absolutely no ulterior motives whatsoever. Just being neighborly.
That’s as best as I can explain. Hopefully I haven’t botched it and pissed you BOTH off!
not at all pissed off.i do understand. i lived in new england for years, after all. and if i thought this wasn’t a request sanctioned by the vt group, i’d yank this down in a hot second. actually, i probably should anyways now since this thread has likely poisoned any good will non-vermonters were willing to share.
