This is an excerpt from Pastor Rick Warren’s interview for Dateline tomorrow, as played on MSNBC news this morning at about 9:15 AM PST. His comments only indirectly go to the issues involving the inauguration invocation.
According to the video clip, apparently Warren believes he’s not a homophobe or homophobic in some part because he served LGBT people donuts and water when LGBT people protested at his church over his stand on Prop. 8.
Update: President-elect Obama’s direct statement on the Warren invocation. Second video includes the YouTube segment above as well:

“every religion”Wow…does he even try to cover it up when he’s lying through his teeth?
more severe?“Had it passed, the pain it would have cost to far millions more would have been more severe.”
Losing marriage rights for 18,000 couples and losing full citizenship for millions of Californians vs. the imaginary loss of feeling superior to us queers. Oh yeah, that’s more severe.
Rick Warren finally exposed for who he isA real modern-day Jesus, wouldn’t you say? 20,000 brainwashed people attend his services each weekend, some of them LGBTs……….for Christ’s sake, leave that church and find a LGBT-friendly one, if you must attend church.
What would Jesus do?That’s the major question. Most of these “religioso” forget (conveniently) to do what Jesus woud do: show love and equality for everyone.
Hiding behind religion and saying “I’m not a homophobe” does not fly anymore.
Prop8 rallies need to be back, especially against Obama for donig this. WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING????
Maybe he should have a KKK member give a speech too, because after all he is for “inclusion” of differences of opinion.
So much for “change”!
It says something sad about Obama tooIt says that being opposed to Black Americans is bigotry while being opposed to the rights of LGBT Americans is just diversity.
The last acceptable prejudice and our president elects shares it./
I find it strangethat fundies claim ALL have friends who are gay, yet according to their calculations, we make up 2% of the population . And if we are to believe thay they make 40% of the population, how can a significant 40% suddenly all have friends who are just 2%?
“the least of these”Matthew 25
41″Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the (DB)eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
42for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink;
43I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’
44″Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’
45″Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’
46″These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Boswell had some things to say about thatIt is factually incorrect (e.g., a LIE) to insist there have never been recognized LGBT partnerships – or at least partnerships between men (sorry ladies, you were chattel for too long to have many examples of lesbian relationships) in the last 5,000 years. Another lie from a lying sack of sh*t.
Interesting
I seem to recall HRC offering diet coke (or something of the like) to the trans people who were picketing it back in 2004.
Hollow is as hollow does.
i meant to add…i meant to add that warren doesn’t even follow his own supposed religion. warren dismisses us because according to his great wisdom, we only are 2% of the population. well, according to jesus, god takes careful note of how you treat each and every one of us, even “the least of these”. because through your actions for or against them, you are acting for or against god itself.
for a guy who professes to care about poverty because his jesus told him to, you would think he would get it. i think he does get it, in fact. but i think he chooses to ignore it because he can swing more power with the too numerous haters when he does.
Does anyone elseget the distinct feeling that straight people are discussing what to do with us, as if we were children in the next room and they are the parents? That it’s up to them to decide how we live our lives and they will let us know just as soon as they make their decision?
Falwell IIPerhaps Obama feels he needs the next best thing to Jerry Falwell.
Divisive? Check.
Raging homophobe? Check.
Expert on homosexuals? Check.
Slobby? Check.
Modern-day pharisee? Check.
Just out of intellectual curiosityWhat does he think would qualify as homophobic? If he doesn’t swing the hockey stick himself to bash someone’s head in, then he’s okay?
Dude, water and donuts? He’s a freakin’ saint!
One of my favorite bits of ScriptureAnd, oddly enough, one of the bits that the “Bible is the literal Truth and the Holy Word of God” crowd never seem to have ever seen before.
His words killand we have seen what happens even to our allies when words inflame minds.
We die.
ummm…One man and one woman?
Islam? No.
Judaism? Currently yes, 5000 years ago? No. See: Bible, The.
who is this TV hostess?is she for real? she didn’t even bother challenging him?
DENIALthese christianists are really great at denial – they just say a thing is so, and it magically becomes so in their minds. I’m not homophobic – poof! I love the gays – poof! what crap. when are we going to have a government that supports ALL of us, and includes ALL of us? We’ve been too accommodating for too long. it’s time to hold obama’s feet to the fire. this is so upsetting.
You just realised this? It’s what they’ve been doing all along.
Knowing vs. giving a F*CKANYONE with LGBT friends would have KNOWN the firestorm Rick Warren being at the Inaugeral would precipitate.
So assuming this was KNOWN by Reid, Pelosi, Feinstein, and Obama, then we can only conclude they don’t give a F*CK.
That not giving a F*CK is a 2 way Street, got that Pelosi, Reid, Feinstein, and Obama?…………GOOD!
Wrong!Offering something nutritious and non-fattening would’ve been a true act of generosity. Pushing off stale, nutrionially devoid donuts is just cynical. He probably thinks giving donuts to people with HIV/AIDS is charity as well.
Let him!I say, let him make his invocation!
This blowhard thinks he’s so bulletproof that he’ll say [do?] something SO stupid that it’ll show him up for the bigot/idjit he really is!
Rick Bigot WarrenJust having any religious figure of any shorts at the inauguration of the Presidency of the United States of America is offensive to me, but choosing Rick Warren is outrageous. Having a narrow minded ignorant bigot that leads a cult speak in the behalf of the highest office in this country is unforgivable. I will still continue to support you (Obama), but I hope this is just one of the few mistakes we all make sometime in all our lives.
SimpleThey all have the same one friend.
No, no, noMena, never speak the truth, it enrages the rightwing fundies. They freaked when Newsweek ran that brilliant cover story showing that the Bible was hardly a model for “traditional marriage,” but that one could find support for gay marriage there if one looked. The problem is that most of them seem not to have read it, or read it carefully.
BTW, if there’re any Blenderites who hasn’t read this, it’s brilliant, compassionate, and fun between the lines because as you read it, you can imagine fundie heads on fire:

Warren hugs teh gaysThis is a very creepy story about how the man and his staff operate:

I’m gladwe agree on it. Pass it on.
