Man, I forgot I had this one queued up over the weekend as a draft. This guy is a real crackpot.
“If a biological basis is found, and if a prenatal test is then developed, and if a successful treatment to reverse the sexual orientation to heterosexual is ever developed, we would support its use as we should unapologetically support the use of any appropriate means to avoid sexual temptation and the inevitable effects of sin.”
– Rev. R. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY
Isn’t this what it all boils down to — homosexuality is a defect or disease to the fundies, so they want to to use science to “cure” it in the womb. From Richard Rothstein:
One of the nation’s leading Southern Baptists has called for a policy that would support medical treatment, if it were to become available, to change the sexual orientation of a fetus inside its mother’s womb from homosexual to heterosexual. This latest assault on our dignity and existence comes from no less a personage than Rev. R. Albert Mohler, the president of the prominent and influential Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world.Acknowleding the strides that genetic science is making in identifying and isolating genetic abnormalities, defects and diseases, Mohler embraces this advance in medical science as yet another tool in the war to root out and cleanse sin.
A regular here at the Blend, Rev. Dr. Jerry Maneker, had this to say on his blog about Mohler:
Here, we have a professing Christian who, even if it were to be demonstrated that being Gay is genetic in nature, still opposes Gay people to the point where he supports changing the sexual orientation of the fetus to heterosexuality; attributes being Gay to the consequences of “original sin.” So you see, not only can’t deeply prejudiced people be won over by logic and data, by appeal to the Gospel of grace and love, but their hateful animus is visceral and only couched with the patina of Christian God-talk, by specious appeals to selected texts of the Bible that really represent their own projections of their twisted views of life that impel them to create “the other” against whom they can externalize their hatred and those twisted views.Hence, no one should have any reason to fear them! He and so many others of his ilk, prove that the Emperor has no clothes! They have absolutely no biblical or Godly justification for condemning or in any way demonizing or discriminating against LGBT people and when their backs are driven to the wall, we come to see that the only thing with which we must contend is their pure, naked prejudice that shows them to be in the same league as any two-bit hater and school yard bully. And, as most of us know, the only way to deal with a school yard bully is to push back; to confront their tactics, and they will retreat and climb back under the rocks from which they came.

Will they Abort gay babies?Ah — the ultimate moral dilemma for a movement that has come to define itself by two things only — opposition to abortion, and opposition to gay people.
So, what will they do, if a “test” is discovered, but there is no “cure”? What if, under this scenario, it becomes possible to predict the likely sexual orientation before birth, but not possible to do anything about it?
(After all, there are many many things that can now be predicted by genetic tests, but which cannot be changed in utero).
Will they call for the abortion of gay babies?
Huh?Don’t these people often bleat about the evils of messing with the fetus? Playing God, and creating “Designer Babies?”
One of the most offensive things I’ve ever heardMindblowingly unconscionable. Hitlerian.
How typical.Once again, these Christofascists show their geniuine bigotry as well as their hypocrisy. No abortions except for the fetuses *they* deem unfit. These people make me sick to my stomach.
Crazy AlIt’s funny, but I live just a couple of miles from this particular seminary and I can assure you that Al Mohler is more than a little crazy. Years ago, the Baptist Seminary here was one of the most progressive places around, had one of the best graduate programs in social work and did a lot of good in the community. But during the late 80′s and especially during the 90′s, things began to change and faculty began to be pushed out, students transfered and things pretty much went to hell in a handbasket. Mohler took the reigns of the Seminary and pushed it radically to the right, alienating most of the religious community here in Louisville. The minister at my church knows him and she says he’s as unhinged in private as he is in public
Over the past couple of years, there has been an interesting public spat going on between Mohler and Joe Phelps, the minister at Highland Baptist, a very liberal church. They’ve publicly argued over everything from homosexuality to abortion to women in the church to a literal interpretation of the bible. Phelps usually gets the best of him, but Mohler has the power.
Anyways, right across the street, just off Lexington Avenue sits the Louisville Presybetarian Seminary. They could not be more different if they tried. To give you an example, each year we have our Transgender Day of Remembrance at the Presybetarian Seminary, something we couldn’t do across the street.
If anyone wants this fool, you’re more than welcome to him. I know about 1.3 million people who would love nothing more.
Sickening but not surprisingAs an ex-Southern Baptist, this is absolutely in line with their teachings. It doesn’t end with us. My mother wanted to tie my nephews left arm down so he wouldn’t try to write with it. I told her to leave him alone, that he’s just a little kid. She said, “Everything is changeable and being lefthanded obviously isn’t normal because most people are righthanded.” (couldn’t help but wonder what my lefthanded, turned fundie to please my mother, sister-in-law felt about that) Too bad bigotry isn’t changeable.
Yes, they willLike war, some murders are necessary to achieve the ultimate goal.
Of Course!……
racial purity, ah the survival ofTraditional Marriage, er Western Civilization demands certain sacrifices…Leave my foetus alone!Tell you what Albert,
I’m eight months pregnant and every second week I’m having someone either examining my genitals/abdomen, squeezing blood out of me, ultrasounding me, making me drink disgusting gluscose drinks or making me piss in a jar. You think I’ve got time or the inclination to have yet another test for something so patently stupid and uneccesary you can kiss my (at the moment decidedly large) arse. Anyone who decides to become a parent should love their children unconditionally no matter what they be and if you think that parental love SHOULD be conditional on the child turning out to be a specific gender, type, sex, colour, blah blah blah then you’re just about the most unchristian christian I’ve ever heard of. I love my two children (and the one on the way)as a mother should and I couldn’t give a toss whether they turn out to be gay/lesbian as long as they are good people that live with dignity, respect, morals and compassion.
Southern Baptist men…We should unapologetically support the use of any appropriate means to avoid sexual temptation and the inevitable effects of sin.
…should lead the way by chopping their own balls off first. “And there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.” — Matt. 19:12 — PRAAAAAAAAYYYYZZZZZZZE JEEEEEEEZUSSSSSSSSSSSUH!!!!
Albert Mohler is a superstitious tent-revival rube who would have enthusiastically burned “witches” in previous centuries–and I wouldn’t take a chance on putting the idea past him now.
Exactly!Mohler clearly doesn’t follow the implications of his questionable logic. Yeah, I suppose genetic engineering could eventually turn us all into little automatons who never have an independent thought, but that would mess up his whole theology of original sin — and the more mainstream theology and reality of free will. What a kook.
It doesn’t stop with aborting fetusesThe next step would involve removing those deemed “inferior” or “defective” from society.
The step after that involves a “final solution” to the “gay question.”
I’ll say it sounds Hitlerian……..
We really need to challenge these sh**heads at every step and expose them for the evil hatemongers they really are.
And……his “fix” for sexual temptation might make straight babies decide not to reproduce when they’re all growed up. That could lead to empty pews at the local Baptist church. Bet Mohler didn’t think of that.
Nazi “science”?They believe that people are made from primordial dirt (other than spawn from primates) and think that global warming is bullshit. How could they change the sexual orientation of the fetus if they are scientifically impaired?
Isn’t there an abandoned utopia village down in Guyanafor this clown and his flock?
Selective ScienceJust like they use selective scripture.
Abortion is a sin, except when it kills fetuses of the undesirables.
Murder is a sin, unless the victim was sinful.
Bearing false witness against one’s neighbor is a sin, unless the neighbor is evil (in your own self-righteous eyes).
Twisting the facts, using junk “science” is OK too, provided it furthers a “good cause.”
Using fear to spur people into committing violence – no problem!

There are many others, but this might get you started.
This creates a paradox which could lead to the end of the FundiesIf abortion is never allowable on what basis can they propose aborting gay fetuses? This could be enough to make their small brains explode.
This sounds an awful lot like people deciding to BE God as opposed to believing in God.
More things to look atA little unsettling, but if you look at Wikipedia’s entry about Nazi Germany’s propaganda mouthpiece, it bears a chilling resemblence to some of today’s anti-gay websites (different technology and different enemies). The one that jumped out at me was this quote:
“At the bottom of the title page there was always the motto “Die Juden sind unser Unglück!” (“The Jews are our misfortune!”), coined by Heinrich von Treitschke in the 1880s.[1] Below the nameplate was the motto “Deutsches Wochenblatt zum Kampfe um die Wahrheit” (“Germany’s Weekly Newspaper for the Fight for Truth.)”
As in Americans for Truth?
Here’s a link: http://en.wikipedia….
Care to rationalize this away, Mr. LaBarbera?
But At What Price?Of course, these anti-gay idealists fail to ask the most fundamental ethical and moral questions of such a scheme – what would the price be? Few things in this world are “free lunches”, and fiddling with human nature is definitely not one of them.
Consider the prospects:
The “altered” people turn out to be violent sociopaths incapable of empathy because you tore out their ability to feel emotions.
or
They turn out to suffer from physical side effects (such as increased intersex rates)
or
*Gasp* – They turn into raving, power-mad religious fanatics.
But most seriously, one has to wonder what such intervention would do to the mind of the child. The consequences could be frighteningly hideous.
I cannot imagine any ethic which would justify such actions in today’s world.
thenthey’d have no one to hate and no way to get money into their coffers.
yep, bad logic. Then again whoever said these people were logical.
Now they know more that God? I’d love to just straight out ask a fundie -And if it came down to a biological basis, are you saying your God was wrong to create us homo’s this way and you are going to “fix” His/Her mistakes? If one of the Commandants is “Thou Shalt have No Other God before ME” – doesn’t that include thinking that you know more than God?
So, if you’re finally willing to say that – can we please drop all the “love the sinner, hate the sin” crap? You don’t – you just hate gay people – no matter what. It’s the way you are, you’re a bigot. Please stop pretending otherwise and raising money by putting the fear of people like me into others.
Scott_NC,I think that few fundies accept the will of God. A fundy will contract cancer and RUN to the hospital to oppose God’s will. It’s as if they’re afraid of dying, as if they don’t want to see Jesus.
I’m confusedBut I thought we “chose” to live what they love to refer to as a “lifestyle” and its impossible for us to be born this way.
Is the right just now realizing that we ARE born this way?
Have to agree with the other bloggers about the ethical question the fundies raise for themselves regarding the abortion of fetuses that they deem “unfit”.
As usual they are talking out of both sides of their ass again.
One of the things that you discover is that……”Christians” will always make an exception, when it suits their desires. This is exactly on point.
